I have a 1992 Coleman Destiny tent trailer and need a new towing
vehicle. I'd like to have a 2004 Honda Element because it suits my
needs nicely BUT the specifications re towing is maximum 1200lbs and
my trailer is around 1800 lbs.
Do you think that I would be foolish to order one? I plan to have
Honda put a tranny cooler in and hitch. I do not drive more than 65
miles per hour and most of my driving is not mountain driving. The
engine is 4cylinder 160 horsepower. I can get it with automatic or
standard. Your suggestions appreciated.

Given the VERY LOW tow rating, the Element obviously does NOT suit your needs,
much less nicely.

Remember, a tow rating includes everything beyond a 150-lb driver. That
includes all passengers, all luggage/stuff on-board the car, the trailer (not
just the tongue weight) and everything on the trailer.

> Do you think that I would be foolish to order one?

Heck, no. The Element is a GREAT car.

However, you would be foolish to TOW your camper with it.

> I plan to have Honda put a tranny cooler

That will NOT increase the tow rating.

If you tow your camper, you risk voiding warranty coverage of components that
will fail due to towing beyond the vehicle's rating.

A 1200-lb tow rating is almost NO tow rating. Virtually all vehicles, no
matter how incapable, are assigned a tow rating for no other reasons than, no
matter the vehicle, someone is going to hitch something to it.

You state that your camper is "around 1800 lbs". Unless you have taken it,
fully loaded for an outing, to a scale, you'd probably be surprised what it
REALLY weighs.

If your camper, fully loaded (full propane, water, all luggage, equipment and
supplies) weighs 2,000-lbs, you should get a tow vehicle with AT LEAST a
2500-lb tow rating.

Good luck!

I think the number talk for themselves....did you look at the rating of the Odissey?

For what it's worth, according to:
http://www.hondacars.com/models/specifications.asp?ModelName=Element

The towing capacity is 1500 pounds.

Still not enough.

DO NOT DO IT.
sorry, but either you will have to get a lighter popup or a tent or a bigger
car.

I went through the frustration and it was not even near as your situation,
I pulled a Santa fe w/ a Mazda MPV, it did the job, but not good, now I pull
a 24'tt w/ Expedition and despite the 8900lb towing capacity it is the same
feeling as I had before, so I imagine, pulling a 1800 w/ Honda Element it
would be way worse.
Make sure you know what you getting in to, othewise you will be very
frustrate and at the end of the day you will end up spending more money than
you planned.
I love hondas, had them but Honda does not make any decent towing vehicle
unfortunately, if they had a good one I would be the first one to buy them.
It is a trade off, look for something that would be 40% more towing capacity
than your popup, i.e. 40/60% rule, if you want to pull a 2000lb trailer get
a TV that can pull at least3000 lb.

How about a Honda Passport? Except it's not really a Honda... :-) The new
ones (at least the Rodeo's) are rated to tow 4500lbs...

That is better choice I would say, I know friends who pull pup w/ Nissan
Xterra, they say it is fine, so I imagine it would be ok. The numbers look
good.
One good indication about popular TV is, shop around about accessories,
hitch etc.... you will find out that some models are readly available which
means they are more popular as TV, not to say you will have a hard time to
find accessories, not at all, just how fast you get them is the question.

Ask around, see someone else has similar set up as you are thinking about.
I am right now trying to find out about miles/gallon, I just came back from
a trip and the truck made 7 miles/gallon (w/o towing it is about 15), wonder
if someone else has the same average.

I get around 8 MPG towing my 5,500-lb ("wet" & loaded) travel trailer. I have
even achieved middle 9's (MPG) with 2-3 tanks, but around 8, or even high 7s,
is the norm.

Then again, I have never personally gotten 12 solo. <sigh>

(My daughter borrowed the truck and made the longest, HIGHWAY, round-trip the
truck has ever been on. She got into the upper 12s.)

I have no (real) complaint: I am getting what I expected and what I paid for:
A fire-breathing, stump-pulling, GAS GUZZLING, big block gasser.

(I miss my popup and REALLY MISS my Geo Metro 1000cc 3-cyl, especially when
refilling the truck's 34-gallon tank.)
