We know the area pretty well, having been up there a couple times, PC.
(Pre-Camper) But we don't know a thing about the quality of the
campsites up there. We had planned to spend some time up around
Belfast... Boothbay, Wiscassett, etc. Any comments or suggestions are
very welcome.

Sorry you had to change your plans. I am not a veteran of Maine, but I
did just get through a planning session (we are going up at the end of
July). As far as campgrounds go we ended up relying on Trailer Life
and Woodall's. We wanted waterfront and clean restrooms. In Boothbay
there are two highly rated campgrounds (both riverfront). They are
Little Ponderosa (www.littleponderosa.com) and Shore Hills
(www.shorehills.com). Both looked good but we choose to go up a little
farther to the Camden area (I wanted to be a little closer to Bar
Harbor for a day trip or two). In addtition neither of the other two
campgrounds has a pool and with my kids they want to swim. So we ended
up at Megunticook campground. They have a heated pool. They are on
the Bay (no waterfront sites - they leave this open as a common area).
Their phone number is 1-800-8842428 and they have a web address too:

We stayed last summer at a CG in Wiscasset called Chewonki Campground. It is
simply lovely. Large (and I really mean large) sites - the one we had was
large enough to hold my truck, the trailer & 2 cars, and there was still enough
room on the other side for another car! The owners are very nice, the camp
store is small, there's a pool and tennis court, nice bath house, and a fishing
dock. The CG is set on a tidal estuary - beautiful! It's pretty quiet at
night, no highway noises, despite it being a few miles off Route 1. There is a
small airport within about 1/2 mile from the entrance, so there is some early
morning noise from small planes.
It's about 3-4 miles to downtown Wiscasset, and the owners should be able to
tell you the "shortcut" which keeps you off Route 1 until you almost get into
town.
The biggest problem was weekend traffic on Route 1, and that was in/around
Bath, as the state had not yet finished the new bridge. It is supposed to be
done by now...
Hope this helps.

The bridge is half way done now. It is officially open, but going North
only 1 lane. Both lanes going south are still open. But it is still not
uncommon to find very large back-ups on the bridge as they are adding signs,
and constructing the on and off ramps on both sides of the bridge. I
would still recommend that if you want to cross the bridge (especially on a
friday - sunday), go before 10 am, and after 6 pm. During the weekdays
(currently), anytime except between 2pm and 6 pm, as during those times you
are dealing with rush hour traffic, and all the big employers let off their
employees at 30 minute different time slots so the back up is never "huge".
Hope this helps.

I second that! Narrows Too (near Acadia National Park) is very nice (see
my web site for review) and Acres of Wildlife, Steep Falls ME has nice
sites, facilities, and activities for all.

Before you buy.
Thanks for all the input; You've certainly given us a lot to look
over. WE'll have further discussion on this thread, I'm sure. Of
course, I'll report to the goup when we go....

Having just returned from Maine, I can sure recommend Little Ponderosa.
Very clean campground. We got a Portland paper each morning. Very few
big rigs, mostly tenters and popups. And the shuttle to Booth Bay
Harbor was great, as the parking is scarce there. When we left a day
early to come home, the manager wanted to know if they had done
something wrong.

I understand it recently changed ownership. Good to hear the quality
hasn't suffered. One of my favorate campgrounds, too.

Just returned from the same campground. We were privileged in the past four
years to get to know the owners (Al and Becky Roberts) personally.
Where else can you camp in a beautiful, private, wooded site, and have
electricity, water hookup, cable tv, spotless bathrooms, and the newspaper
delivered to your site every morning, neatly wrapped in a plastic bag? And
that's just for starters!
Unfortunately, (for us) the Roberts family sold the campground March 15, to the
man who lives next door, and owns the Boothbay area shipyard. It was on the
front page of the Boothbay Register newspaper, June 22 edition.
It caused us many tears, as we were asked to move to Maine and become the
managers. However, after much prayer and thought, we turned it down, and are
still here in PA!
It seems that the campground will remain the same; at least we are sure hoping
so!
(Camp 6 nights, and the 7th is free). It is truly our favorite campground.

No we haven't camped there in the fall, but we'd love to! Friends of ours
camped at Little Ponderosa last October (very beginning of the month) and they
never turned on their furnace (but we probably would have!)
Nights I'm sure are very cool then, but I've heard the days warm up
beautifully.
