Our family would like to go to Chincoteague, VA the week-end after
Thanksgiving. We read that Inlet View Campground is open year round.
Does anyone know anything about it?

I just looked at www.campusa.com/virginia.html and searched for the town of
Chincoteague. Results: 5 campgrounds. Tom's Cove is the only one with
information listed. They close November 30, 1999. Try the search yourself
to get all the information. Phone numbers are listed, too.

Good luck.

We have only driven thru Inlet View (and Tom's Cove) at the 'Teague (while
staying at Maddox on the circle on Beach Drive)..
.
Thanksgiving is the best time to go, no mosquitoes, no real crowds, and you can
have some truly phenomenal weather (we have had cold and snow too!)

The Natl Wildlife Refuge also opens a normally closed area for wildlife
watchers and the ever present birders. My inlaws will be there but we will not
be making the trip this year.... have a few of those famous oysters (at Don's
of course) for those of us not making the trip
.... have fun.

If you haven't already, check this link out..

Thank you, Bill, for your input. We had a great week-end at
Chincoteague and did eat at Don's! The weather was good - there was a
big storm Friday night while we slept, but nice and clear the next
morning! We arrived Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. and drove through
Maddox, the Inlet View and Tom's Cove. After the kids saw the view of
the water and lighthouse at Tom's Cove, we had no choice and we were
very pleased there.

We did have one unusual incident occur on Friday night. We were walking
along the waterfront at the campground before dinner and noticed two
police cars stop near our campsite. We thought they were just talking,
but they stayed so long, my husband suggested I go up and see what was
happening. When I approached the campsite, they started asking me lots
of questions such as when we had arrived and how we had paid. I told
them we had arrived the night before and paid that morning as directed
on the sign. Then they asked how we had paid. I said with cash and they
asked if I had any more cash in my possesion and could they see it! To
make a long story short(er), I had paid the campground with a
CONTERFEIT $100 bill! They asked where I got the bill and luckily there
is a paper trail showing that I received the money from a local bank!
They made us all go to the police station (two kids included) and
questioned me and my husband separately and had us make out statements.
We must not look like counterfeiters, because they told me they were
sure I had not knowingly passed the bill on. The owners of the
campground said they felt awful about the whole thing and we told them
we knew they were just doing what they had to do. Other than our "brush
with the law" we really had a good trip!

Jewel, whoa, the counterfeit experience is one that is out of the ordinary for
sure!! But it certainly sounds like the rest of your extended weekend was
definitely one to remember...Did you visit the beach? Any evidence of the
hurricanes ? (we were in central FL from July until early Nov so I didn't see
to much on the news about the MD/VA area) Was the "teague" crowded?
The CG's usallly are not in November...
I am glad that you had good weather and enjoyed Don's... I certainly missed our
annual trip.
Happy camping on 2000.

We did go to the beach at Assateague; however, since this was our first
trip, we have no basis for comparison. I do know that the "north"
parking lot completely washed out with Hurricane Dennis and they have
no plans to reopen it. The Park Ranger said that they are already
planning shuttle service only to the island (like they do in Harpers
Ferry), so I am glad we got to see the wildlife loop at our own pace!
Overall, we did not see much evidence of damage. Being from eastern NC,
we had extensive flooding ourselves from Floyd and know the signs of
both wind and water damage. Several people we met said that Dennis did
more damage to Assoteague than Floyd. It was not really crowded
anywhere, especially the CG. There were lots of birdwatchers for the
Waterfowl Festival, but not as crowded as I imagine it can get in the
summer. We loved it and will definitely go back!
Thanks again for your help!

Jewel, was just wondering, if you had any recommendations for CG's in our
area...I'm from New Bern and new to this NG and pop-up camping, as I've only
had mine a month. My wife and I have taken the family on two excursions
thus far...2 weeks ago to Hanging Rock State Park (wonderful!) and to Camp
Hatteras this past weekend.

Jeff, thanks for the info!

I have heard the same about Cliffs of the Neuse, being nice, but with the
damage from the flood being so bad in that area, I'd call first.

I've noticed there are lots of parks around the Raleigh area to camp...but
doesn't seem like they have much else to offer (ie, hiking). And I've yet
to figure out how to get my camper and my boat to the same place at once!
But it's nice to know someone that is familiar with that area, as I'm sure
we'll check that area out sometime next year.

Thanks again!
Bob

I think the Cliffs of the Neuse is closed due to Hurricane Floyd.
Although it has no hook-ups, it has hot showers in the bathouses and it
is a very nice campground. I've never camped there as we usually go
further away. "The grass is always greener." There are two hiking
trails and a museum as well as a swimming beach where you can rent
canoes (in warm weather, of course). It will probably reopen in spring.

There is a lot to do in the Raleigh area as far as museums, but not
much to do nature-wise. After all, Raleigh-Durham is very urban. Will
find out any info. you would like to know, though.

Hi Derby's...I'm in Raleigh and am planning to camp in eastern NC this winter,
but I haven't experienced many CG's there yet.

I do know that Cliffs of the Neuse SP near Goldsboro is supposed to be nice (no
Hookups, like all NC state parks) as is Carolina Beach SP south of Wilmington.

I'm planning to do some winter camping in SC, as their state parks have full
hookups.

You can always camp on Falls Lake and Jordan Lake outside of Raleigh
year-round; the state recreation area CG's have full electrical hookups, but no
H2O at the sites, only common spigots. They also offer Hot showers. The sites
are large and level. E-mail me if you need more info.

Enjoy, Jeff
