My son had an ear infection this weekend and he had to go to the emergency
room for medication. I need to call my health insurance company Monday
morning, but we will be in Canada on camping trip (I live in Maine). Anyone
know if I can use the insurance company's 1-800 number in Canada??? I know I
have called Canada from here with 1-800#'s, but I am not sure 1-800 #'s are
free to use from Canada to USA. Any information appreciated, I prefer the
1-800 over using my calling card.

I would hope an insurance company would have a 800 number to use anywhere in
the world!

800 numbers are free to use in Canada BUT certain companies have separate
800 numbers for Canadian use....and others will call the US office.

For your own peace of mind call the number you have before you leave and ASK
if it will work in Canada....

If it is an interstate 800 number, yes you may. I would call first to see if
it is. And also take the non toll free number too. Get a calling card from
Walmart. It works in Canada and is cheap to call with. I would take the cell
for emergencies. You will porbably having roaming charges.

I have worked in a Telephone company for more than 13 years, the answer is...
it all depends how your insurance company asked their provider to program the
800line. All toll free line can be made available Can/US and Foreign, but it
needs to be programmed this way from their Toll Central Office. In some cases,
companies have 2 different numbers for Can and US (mainly for cost and tracking
reasons). if you give us the Number, I can give it a try from here, in
Montreal, Quebec (Canada)
