Hi. My husband and I just bought our first pop up. It's a 1988
Starcraft Starflyer. We love it, but we need some help figuring out
how to set up the awning. The manual has nothing in there about it.
Can anyone out there help? Thanks.

I just sold my 87 Starflier and it had an awning. It may not be the same on
though. I'll explain as best I can.

Roll the awning out while the roof is still down. Raise the roof all the
way.
You should have 12 pole pieces, these all fit together to form 3 "roof
supports" and three (maybe two?) "legs". The "roof supports" have a rubber
foot on one end and an end that comes to a point. These poles are "springy".
The "legs" have a foot (metal? with a ring to secure a tent stake through)
at one end and at the other a flat spot with a hole in it. These poles are
adjustable (for height) by twisting to lock/unlock.
Now place one end of a roof support against the camper roof at the base of
the awning. Compress and fit the pointy end into the bar at the outside edge
of the awning. Make the the point goes through the hole in one of the legs.
You now have one pole set up. Repeat with the other end and finally the
middle pole.

Make sure you stake down the legs so your awning does not fly away. Also be
sure to have a slope to allow water/dew to run off.

Let me know if you need any clarification. I could always draw a diagram and
e-mail it to you.

If you are interested I know where you can buy a brand new Starcraft
Starflier screenroom for a factory awning for pretty cheap. I'd be happy to
forward the info.

On the subject of Starcraft screen rooms --

Can you give instructions on the procedure for setting one up? We have one
that came with our camper, but we have only set it up once (in the yard to
see how it looked!). I remember it took a long time and was really a pain.

Since we are going on a long trip this summer, I'm thinking it would be nice
to set up as we'll be camping four nights at one place and then another four
nights at another. Would definitely be worth it to me, but my husband is
not so sure since it was a pain to put together.

Let me know if there are steps to follow to get it up easily.

Thanks, Kris

I can let you know how we set up ours - it takes less than 5 minutes (once
the awning is up). We pop up the roof only a small amount - maybe 2 feet -
so that we can easily reach the awning. We then setup the awning before the
trailer is popped up. Once the awning is up, we unfold the screen room. lay
it around the awning, then zip it on. It makes a huge difference to have it
at your level. Once it is on we pop the trailer up the rest of the way,
raise up the awning/screenroom to the correct height, and enjoy! We always
use the screenroom when we want the awning, or leave it all in - we've found
that the screenroom does the best job of keeping the awning from blowing up
over the trailer. (Tried staking it down - still have the damaged poles
from the wind).

Thanks Ryan -

I will remember your trick of only raising part way before zipping on the
screen room!

Just remember - some people like the screen rooms, others don't. The first
couple of times we had to pay more attention to the layot on the ground to
make sure we had the screen room layed out in the right orientation. But
once we got the hang of it, we use ours on any trip that is 2 nights or
greater.
