Okay folks, total newbie to hauling trailers. Just got an approval on
my offer for a repo'd 1999 Starcraft Ventura (I think its the 2601
model). Since the price is dirt cheap, beggers can't be choosers, so
no hammering the choice.
I need to figure how much drop I need in my hitch. I've got a 2004
Dodge 1500 Quad Cab, set for towing. How do you figure how much drop
to put on the hitch? There are straight ones, all the way down to a 6
inch drop.
Also, the tounge says it 2". Do I need a two inch ball or one that is
1 7/8 to give it some turn?
I know for some of you this may be totally stupid, but I've not found
anything on the net and the trailer doesn't have a manual.
Thanks in advance for the info.

My advice would be to back up the truck to the popup. Make sure that the popup
is level. Then measure from the receiver hitch to the trailer hitch--that should
tell you what drop (if any) you need.

Buy the 2" ball. I believe that all Starcrafts require that. You may want to
contact a Starcraft Dealer just to be sure.

Thanks Mark. I'll follow your advice.
Hope you all don't mind if I hang around here a spell. Seems like a right
neighborly bunch. Had a friend that used to be in here, Joe Fleischman,
haven't heard much from him lately.

Frank,

Definitely call or email Starcraft. They are very helpful on supporting
their older trailers. I know since I have a '96 1224 (12' box and
loaded with all the bells and whistles.)

I've been told by 'old timers' to have the nose of a trailer level to
slightly down for the most well-behaved towing. I have also personally
found that, at least for my setup, bias ply tires are BBBAAAADDDDD
for handling. Since your trailer is a '99 it's about time to change
tires so I would recommend radial trailer tires even if the trailer's
ID plate lists bias (B78).

My family of five loves our Starcraft. I'm sure you and yours will too.
To email me remove the '.nospam' from my email address.

Thanks. The difference is that the Army post is 10 minutes from my house
and no freeways. Do have the possibility of a friend with a couple of
acres. Still looking.
Thanks again

I've got mine in a regular RV storage place close to home right now. I am
considering storing it nearer to a camping area about 40 miles away that we
spend a lot of time at. That way, I can just go to the campground and take it
out from their storage and put it in a campsite.

There are pros and cons to this strategy. I just have to find the time to do
some more research.

Woo Woo! Got it!
Its a '99 Starcraft 2406. Great shape. I really feel sorry for the person
that lost it (it was repossessed). These things happen. When I was a kid,
we knew the repo man and pawn shop owner on a first name basis.
It is missing the stove and the dinnette table. I'm going to make a table
for it and write to Starcraft and find out how much the stove costs. For a
while, I'll just use my Coleman.
Got the front bed up. Still am totally lost on how to put the back supports
in. I figured out the two straight poles, but the two with the hinges in
the middle got me stumped. Right now, they are sitting at a 90 degree
angle, but they don't touch the ground and I can't figure out how they
setup.
Its cool that it has a shower, toilet and AC. That may even get my spousal
unit out there (yeh, right).
There is one little piece of edgeing on the sink that is coming loose. I'll
fix that.
Also got to write to Starcraft about a manual. I don't want to burn the
thing up on the first use.
But for now, I'm a pop up owner. Is there a secret handshake (cranking
motion)?
Cheers.

I'll bet the price quoted by Starcraft will have you using the Coleman for a
LONG time!

Don't climb into that bunk end until the supports are ALL properly installed.

My Starcraft was a 1987 so I may be waaaaaay off here...

The "hinged" supports have a sheet metal "leg" and a pole "leg". The sheet
metal leg should have a hooked end. That inserts into a slot along the top
edge of the camper (lower) box, right where the bunkend slides in. The
bottom/pole portion of the assembly should have a flattened end that inserts
into a slot on the lower c-channel frame of the trailer.

(That's the best I can describe from my memory of a long gone trailer I loved.)

> Its cool that it has a shower, toilet and AC. That may even get my spousal

Hot & cold, running water; flush toilet; air conditioning; What's not to
like? That's called "roughing it easy". :)

> Also got to write to Starcraft about a manual.

You might even try email. I've heard they're pretty good supporting past
models.

> I don't want to burn the thing up on the first use.

Good plan. All the appliances, such as the furnace, water heater and toilet
were made by third parties. All should have the name of their manufacturer
somewhere on or inside. You might contact each maker directly for specific
operating instructions.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Congrats!!! I know the feeling of getting something new to play with!

As to the stove, we bought one from Harbor Freight that we absolutely love!
Here's the link
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=4826
It's heavy-duty, easy to clean, cooks evenly, fits nicely on the countertop
(can be used outside also) and has 4 burners spaced nicely apart for larger
pots and skillets. Best of all, it's less than $60! They do have other size
stoves if you're interested.

Here's a link to my photo album showing some of the preliminary remodel of
our 87 Starcraft (major remodel this winter) and a view of the stove setup.

And the saga continues. I was able to contact the former owner today. He
gave me the stove, the dinette table and all the manuals. Awesome. He also
has an awning/screen porch for the popup that I'll buy next paycheck.
Passed safety inspection, fully registered, time to hit the books.
Thanks all for your help and advice. Thinking about sleeping in it tonight
as our A/C in the house conked out.

FWIW, both DE and MD (states I've registered trailers in) have required
inspections.

Here, in Quebec, they don't even carry a record of approx prices of
trailers.. so if the sell is not done through a dealer....you basically
can have it registered saying that you paid 1$ for it... and pay taxes
on 1$

I'm in Maryland. Mandatory safety inspections before you can register a
trailer. They check the brakes, alignment, lights, and overall structural
integrity.

How much? Was (is) it a Starcraft?

Sorry to hear about the house AC, but "camping" in the driveway for a few
nights is a GREAT idea with a new (to you) camper. There is no better place
to be if something breaks or the weather gets bad.

Good luck and have fun!

What county? I live in Cecil County, MD and inspections are done once when
the vehicle changes hands and that's it. No annual inspection.

There is an annual emissions test for cars/trucks, but no annual safety
inspection.

Anne Arundel. Well, I know its not like that for the vehicles, but thats
what the lady at the MVA told me. I'm new to this trailer thing, so I took

I think she was mistaken. I have 3 trailers (pop-up, small boat, utility)
and they've all only been inspected once each - when I bought them (or in
the case of the utility, when I moved to MD).

MD seems to be happy to just take my registration renewal money through
the mail... ;-)

The agents at DMV often dont know anything about the rules outside passenger
cars. One thing for sure they dont know anything about boat registration
requirements in Texas.
