Summer camping trips planned?

Where are you planning on going, any trips planned? We will be heading back up
to Door County, Wisconsin, Peninsula SP, very nice area. Very wooded. First
stop, Charlie's Smokehouse for some smoked salmon. Great bike trails up there
too. That will be in June. Most of our trips are at a nearby SP, nice to have a
nice close place too. Spring is coming!!!!!!!!!!!1

Unfortunately, I was laid off at Thanksgiving (Happy Holidays :-( ). We
haven't planned any camping trips and won't until I'm employed again. :-(

Hi again;

Boy, you're all over tonight. While we won't stray too far from home this year,
sweetie wants to see Zion National Park. I'm thinkin' maybe next year. We've
been talking about a bigger camper for a while, and the season after next may
be the right time for that and a nice long trip in the southwest. I'd like to
see Tombstone and the Superstitions. If things work out, I may have to take a
business trip to Las Vegas soon and with the orange alert I will have to drive
and I'll cruise Zion on the way.

Gettysburg, PA. The interesting thing is that three other families from our
Georgia Campers group will be joining us. One of them still lurks here and

How neat. I met one gal from the newsgroup, Edie that lived a few miles north
of me. Haven't seen or heard from her since. lol

Our big trip is two weeks up into Portland, Oregon. We will stop at Lassen
and Crater Lake on the way. Then four nights in Portland - with in-laws. The
kids can stay with them, we are staying in our popup :-). Then off to the
Hood River, then over to the coast and work our way back down to So Cal.

We also have 5 days in San Diego, 4 nights at Pismo, and 3 nights at Montana
de Oro. I am tent camping for the last trip - it is just me and my 10 yo
daughter, along with two other moms and their daughters.

We will probably slip in a couple of extra trips if we can!

It looks like this year, I am limited to the state parks. My big trip starts
in the middle of may. United or Lan Chile won't let me hook my pop up on the
back of their Boeing 767s. We're going to Quito, Cuenca and Buenos Aires to
visit past exchange students we have hosted. But wouldn't that be a sight? A
big airplane with a bunch of trailers behind it? Like a kite in the air with
a long tail.

We're lucky that we have several decent SPs and US Forest areas around.
Sounds like Terri and her crew will be there too.

Awwwwww...smoked salmon...love the stuff! I always try to look for a
good local meatlocker near our camping locations. Nothing like a good
hefty grilled steak, ribs, fish, and some smoked salmon, jerky, or
beef sausage, etc. I have a dehydrater and like to make my own jerky
(certainly less expensive!) for taking with on trips. I've never made
smoked salmon, but a coworker does, and it's much cheaper and tastes
great. Lucky for me, he brings me some of his surplus venicin sausage
too...another great favorite.

We get our new (1st) popup in a few weeks. I'm kinda leaning toward
Mt.Rushmore which is a good days' drive, as our "big event" this year.
Otherwise, smaller trips to northern MN to see some great
woods/lakes.

Thanks for your concern, I've got a few irons in the fire (but none very
warm). Unfortunately I live in a small area (Cape Canaveral, FL) where
almost a thousand engineers have been laid off in the last 6 months. There
would normally be a few small projects that I could have gotten onto, but
the Columbia disaster has killed funding for any new NASA projects.

Have you considered teaching? I team teach with a nuclear engineer who was
laid off by PECO. After stumbling into teaching, he became a first rate
high school science teacher.
Regarding NASA, it's a damn shame that funding is so political and
illogical. I don't think we can afford to not continue the push outward.
Let's hope NASA regains the priority status it once had.

As I indicated in another post, we are heading for the desert
southwest for May and coming back to the grandkids in Washington just
in time for a June 6 high school graduation -- if the grandson doesn't
decide to drop out. Can you believe it, he's getting good grades and
was thinking of dropping out about 4 months from graduation.

The highlights of our trip include: Lake Tahoe/Reno (2 full exploring
days); Ely/Lehman Caves; Bryce Canyon (2 days) and the surrounding
area (Kodacrome Basin/Grosevenor Arch, Brian Head, Zion Canyon)
(another 2 days); Alamagordo (3 days visiting with friends); Carlsbad

Canyonlands (3 days before a move to...); Moab for Arches Nat'l Park,

repeat but we'll have more time this time. Even so, we won't be doing
the area justice. I figure this trip will let us decide exactly where
we want to return to and spend some real time after I retire in 4
years.

Sounds like an excellent idea. Don't limit your search to central Florida.
Carreer changes are always difficult. The only problem is they want you to
get a M.Ed., but you could do that in your sleep. And keep the continuing ed
going. (I know I will get some flack for that M.Ed remark, but it's true.
Fewest hours required for a degree.) But most schools systems are crying for
hard science teachers, or math.

We are going to be sticking fairly close this summer. My son just got married
and the finances are really sad. Wedding's are expensive! LOL

Anyway, we have several state parks close, Table Rock and Linville Falls, and
we are just a short 30-50 miles from some of our other favorite places.
Chimney Rock and Blackforest .Several trips will be just us girls as we go
check out this years flower and garden shows.

Thanks for the advise . . . but I can't afford the pay cut. This is Florida,
starting salaries for teachers is in the low 20's. I could make almost as
much at McDonald's and I wouldn't have to pay for school supplies out of my
own pocket.

We are headed over to Potholes SP, WA. in June. They have a Combine Demolition
Derby over in Lind WA that's always a blast. Friday, June 13 this year. If the
moon is full it ought to really be something. Then Steamboat Rock SP near Grand
Coulee in September right after Labor Day. My wife was born in Washington and
I've lived here most of my life, but since we bought the trailer a few years
back, we've been amazed how much there is to do so close by. Hope you all have
a wonderful summer discovering all of the great places this country has to
offer!

Some of the Georgia Campers will be camping near Brunswick, GA at Blythe Island
regional campgroun April 11 - 13. Two families will be getting there on April
9.

Then more of us will be getting together at Raysville Campground June 6 - 8.
It's not far from Augusta, GA on Lake Strom Thurmond. Those sites can be
reserved on ReserveAmerica.

We usually do a fall camping trip and maybe a Labor Day gathering.

Montana de Oro is an absolutely gorgeous state park at the southern part of
Morro Bay. The closest city is Los Osos. The hiking there is spectacular,
with some easy hikes and other more difficult. I have never camped there,
but I have visited the park before. It is spectacular.

If you are familiar with Morro Bay, there is that long sandspit that ends
just before the rock? The sandspit starts at Montana de Oro.

You can reserve thru Reserve America. It would be about 2.5 hours drive from
TO - just north of San Luis Obispo.

Hoping to make a run up to Sequoia & Kings Canyon, in Northern
California, some time this summer. Possibly also down in the San Diego
area but not sure. And there's always our membership in the CG at
Ramona Canyon (near Escondido, CA).
