We want to take a camping trip to mid/upstate NY in late May.

Can anyone recommend campgrounds (flush toilets and showers, please) that
are in the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes, or along the canal?
State Parks or Private.

Thanks!
Justin

It's been a few years, but I really liked Letchworth SP.

My favorite State Park in NY is Southwick Beach. In season you will
probably need reservations, especially on weekends. For further
info see...

I've stayed at Watkins Glen State Park - It was GREAT. The sites were huge,
scenic and the bathrooms had alot of HOT water - to the point of scalding.
I will admit though, the bathrooms could have been abit cleaner, but I'll be
back again this year.

Also, they've got the biggest swimming pool I've ever seen.

I'd recommend it!

One of our favorite campgrounds is Sampson State Park. It is a former
military base with lots of biking trails and an interesting museum.
The facilities were clean. We really enjoyed it there and plan on
returning this summer.

We like Eagle Point State Campground, Pottersville, NY- it's on Schroon Lake.
Lake Durant State Park is near Blue Mountain Lake.

Very late reply on this one... but since I have a pop-up now and am in
Syracuse... I'm starting to think of this myself....
Right off hand I can think of:

Letchworth State Park (kinda S. of Rochester)
Allegany State Park (S. of Buffalo, may be a little over the 125
miles)
Green Hills (E. of Dewitt I think)
Old Forge (great for kids with the waterpark)

I have friends in Oswego, and I've been thinking about trying Selkirk Shores
SP sometime (I also like fishing the Salmon River). Any info or opinions
on that one?

Hi all,

Ok, here's what I can give you about some places we have gone that are great,
we've been going to some now for 15 years.

1. Brennan Beach- Pulaski NY. Nice, wooded and open field sites. Tables,
Activites, beach, large pool, playground, right at the mouth to the Salmon
River makes great night time fishing from shore, can get busy, over all clean.

2. Selkirk Shores, Pulaski- Nice sites, good fishing from here too, clean
showers.

3. Alpine Lake- Corinth NY- Nice sites, tables, some have cable, two lakes,
kiddy pool and regular, snack bar, clean baths, only have showers near the main
entrance, plenty to do, rates are reasonable.

4. JellyStone at Ellenville, NY( I-81S to17)- Nice sites, very nice baths,
activites through the summer, pool, lake for fishing, pool.

5. Skyway- Ellenville, NY(I-81S to 17)- Shaded and wooded sites, clean baths,
activites, pool, sauna, indoor rec with fitness equipment.

Those are a few that we have gone back to more than 3 times. Some run a little
high, call for rates. Some take Good Sam others take AAA.

Hope this help and if I can tell you anything else about them just ask away!

Let's see, Adirondaks -- we camped at Lake Durant, some very nice spacious,
wooded sites on a lake. It has a nice view of Blue Mountain. Not very big
either.

We stopped on the way home at eighth lake and the water front sites there
can be awesome. We book early and missed the opportunity to camp there this
summer. Next year.

We liked Stoney Brook in Dansville. Unfortunately, to get the best sites on
the brook, you have to forego water and elec. This place has two natural
grotto swimming areas. The lower grotto which you get to after a
picturesque hike through the gorge is tiered for different swimming
abilities from wading to diving.

Hamlin Beach SP is nice in the non-pet loops. Again some sites are amazing.
Long, long beach, but I wouldn't go on a holiday weekend, it is popular
with the residents of Rochester for sun bathing for the day, and the beach
gets crowded and many are unsupervised children and teens. At least they
were the weekend we were there.

We visit campgrounds around where we are camping or on the way home from
trips out, to search out good sites and campgrounds. The offices of SP are
good about giving you camp maps. We also do this at campgrounds we are
staying at for future reference.

Good luck.
Kimberly

Hi,

We like Green Lakes SP which is just east of Syracuse. Great beach and lake
to swim/fish in. We camped there this past weekend in the cold/drizzle. The
furnace kept us nice and cozy. Other recommendations are: Southwick or
Westcott Beach SP. Southwick has a better beach. Westcott has nice, level
electrical sites on the upper level. We also enjoyed Wellesley Island SP up
near Alexandria Bay. We spent a week at StonyBrook last summer. We had alot
of fun in a no hook-up spot, and the battery lasted the whole trip with no
problems.

Well, we don't have a mess of experience with the places mentioned so
far, but can tell you; We've had some VERY nice times at the KOA in
Mexico, NY. Not much in the area to visit, I suppose, but that's the
point, as I gather it. Within shooting distance of the 1000 islands
and Syracuse proper, if you're into it. Very Clean

The KOA at Old Forge is OK, if you don't mind the size of the place.
Very clean, well kept grounds, though the facilities could have used
some help.

Lakeside beach is about as nice as the aforementioned Hamlin... about
15 miles or so farther dow the Parkway... a nice drive, mind you....
with less people.

Aleghany State Park is nice too, though I guess it's pushing yur 125
mile drive a bit. If you go, we prefer the Red House area. (Ask for a
map when you get there, the place is huge!)

On the whole, we're finding that the government run RV places are not
as well kept.

An interesting side point my wife discovered; Invariably, in the state
parks, you'll find that the spots nearest the showers/toilets are
taken up with the class B's and Class A's... the ones that already
have toilets and shower inside them. The rest of us be hanged,
apparently. If they brought their own... why hog the spots closest?

Cheers!
/E
