2001 Astro/Safari tow rating reduction

Noticed something very interesting today. GM has reduced the tow
rating on the 2001 Astro/Safari by 600 lbs over the 2000 model. The
manual for my 2000 Safari AWD 3.42 rear end says that the maximum tow
rating is 5300 lbs. The identical 2001 model lists 4700 lbs. Maximum
tow rating for any 2001 passenger Astro/Safari is 5500 lbs down from
6000 lbs. Don't think changes in the weight of the van would account
for all the reduction. I wonder if some customers had problems towing
at the upper end of the range thereby causing GM to reduce the rating?
Just a thought.

Different spplier on the tranny, or different brakes?
