Has anyone ever visited the Bear Den Campground in Spruce Pine, North
Carolina? This is near Linville, and Lineville Gorge, just off the
Blue Ridge Parkway. We are thinking of including it in our trip to
North Carolina next summer. Any information on that or any other
campground in that area would be helpful.

We have been to Bear Den Campground twice and loved it both times. It was in
May, 1988 when we first visited and June 1993 when we last visited. A lot of
the campsites have rhododendrum bushes to provide privacy, but not all of them.
Site A-54 was one we particularly liked. There is a nice hiking trail on the
campground property. I'm pretty sure they have lake swimming there but we did
not swim when we were there.
The restrooms were remarkably clean and one time (before we had the porta potty
in the pop-up) I saw them cleaning the restrooms at 1 am in the morning.
For the record, we usually camp in National and State Forest Campgrounds as we
prefer privacy and quiet over conveniences, but Bear Den is one of the few
private campgrounds we enjoyed. Obviously it has been 6 years since we were
last there, but we will go back again sometime.
At that time the campground was owned by a medical doctor who did not need the
campground for the income. I don't know who owns it now.
Another place we enjoyed, but is not in the immediate area, was Hanging Rock
State Park that I believe is in Danbury, NC. E-mail me if you want more info on
Bear Den as I think we have an old brochure and a list of sites we liked.

OK, you asked for it...BDCG was the first private CG we ever visited with our
new pop-up. It is located less than a mile from the Blue Ridge Pkwy, and it
very convenient to many High Country attractions (Grandfather Mt., Linville
Gorge, Linn Cove Viaduct, Mt. Mitchell, etc.). The approach road off the BRP is
rutted and dusty, as is the entire CG.

The Bathhouses are fairly clean, but old. (lots of spiders in the showers; no
big deal to me but the kids were scared). Some of the sites are quite a ways
from the H2O and electrical hookups and my hoses and power cords didn't reach,
but they let me borrow extentions free of charge with a deposit.

The entire CG seems to set against hillsides, so the area isn't perfect for
small children who like to bike. Some of the sites are close together; other's
aren't...simply luck of the draw.

The other facilities (game room, store, swiming lake) seem to be above average.
The staff was helpful, but not overly so.

Spruce Pine was not too far for supplies, perhaps 15-20 minutes for a Food Lion
and Rose's.

The National Park CG at Linville Falls is IMHO poor...sites very close together
with little privacy. You'll have better luck @ Price Park CG on the BRP @ mile
marker 298...no hookups but better privacy and beauty. Also very close to Boone
and Blowing Rock for supplies and touristo sites.

All in all, I will go back, but not my first choice (hey, I'm picky).

All of these CG's are situated between 3000 and 3400' above sea level, meaning
cool temps all summer long.

Need more info? E-mail me directly and I'll be glad to help.

My wife and I stayed at BDCG a couple of months ago. I pretty much concur
with the other posts. Don't plan on having a nice campfire because the
firewood is too expensive. (I took my own fortunately) You should
definitely plan on giving your camper and tow vehicle a good bath when you
get home, because the entrance road is very dusty. Personally, my wife and
I liked Spruce Pine Campground better. No frills. No gameroom and stuff
like Bear Den. Just a quiet secluded campground. Only problem with it was
there were only a few sites we really liked. A couple in the back had just
wonderful views. E-mail me if you are interested.

Have you looked at their web site? www.bear-den.com We rode through the
park in late Oct. and at that time, the store was closed (it was a weekday).
Rode around the campground and as someone else stated, the sites are
hit-or-miss as far as size and location. We stayed at Linville Falls
Campground: www.linvillefalls.com (private, in the town of Linville Falls).
Nice clean campground with little in the way of amenities. Sites are nice
sized and the owners are very friendly. If you have little ones, there is
not as much to do here as at Bear Den. However it is closer to Grandfather
Mtn., Linville Falls and the Caverns. As a side note, when looking at
anything is this area, pay attention to the name. You have the town of
Linville, the town of Linville Falls, Linville Falls itself and no telling
what else Linville :) HTH

We own a lot in a private campground resort in Traphill NC. The name of
the resort is Greenstreet Mountain Resort and is directly across from
Stone Mountain State Park, and the Thurmond-Chatham Gamelands on the
Blue Ridge. Although they do not have an office that rents sites, sites
are rented by individual owners. Not knowing what you are looking for
this may be of interest to you. It provides the typical pool,
playground, mini golf, and full hook-ups; but also has a 9 hole (18 this
Spring) golf course and pro shop. We thoroughly love the place, and
enjoy the fact that rarely do you have people right next to you due to
the fact that all owners are not there every weekend. We have not ever
rented our site, but have tossed around the idea. If you would be
interested in more information about this place drop me an e-mail.
