I think Jack Kemp would be a good candidate because he has the look of being
more 'diverse'. But forget about 1996 for now, let's worry about bouncing
those check bouncing, pork barreling buttheads in congress in 1994!!!!

I think speculating at this time is a bit dangerous, although lots
of people seem to view Kemp as the man to whom the torch will be
passed.
One has to be careful when looking at Kemp, though. He says and
has done a lot of good things for the conservative movement in America.
But, some people have their doubts about his intentions. I recommend
an article about Kemp in the current issue of _Chronicles_ magazine by
Jeffry Tucker. Mr. Tucker articulates a number of questions about Kemp
that are going to have to be addressed soon.
Subsequently, I think we have a real leadership vacuum in
conservative circles. There are some young Republican congressmen and
women who deserve more support from the leadership, but simply aren't
getting it. The leadership sometimes appears to be stunned over the current
turn of events, especially regarding the ramming of Clinton's economic
legislation though the Congress. I fail to understand why there aren't
a few people in both houses, out in front of the cameras on a *daily*
basis, making the pitch for the conservative opposition to these
pork packages and "blueprints."
Until someone comes forward and acts in that fashion, nothing
is going to change.

I read in the Conservative Chronicle that recently Kemp has said some very
liberal things dealing with social issues. For instance, he was not clear
about his views on whether illegal aliens should get welfare. Instead of
saying "Stop the Welfare" he said "Stop them at the Border." It seems to me
that both are good ideas, and there would be fewer at the border if the welfare
was stopped! He has also implied that he is not strictly against raising
taxes, but he is for the indexing of capital gains and perhaps a tax cut on
capital gains...
He seems to be going liberal on social programs, but I don't have enough info
about that. I think Kemp is really trying to broaden his base by catering to
the minorities, which isn't all bad, but if he goes against the conservative
beliefs of empowerment of the minorities (not creating or continuing an
underclass, as the Great Society did,) he may alienate many conservatives.
I personally am having second thoughts about him, but there is much time before
'96.

The impression I've been getting is that Kemp is more concerned about
economic policy, while Bill Bennett is more concerned with cultural
problems in America. Which is more important? Either we have a potential
two-pronged attack on liberalism, or we have a potential conflict between
the two of them over which is the top priority.
Just one late-night observation. Back to your regularly scheduled
abortion/gay-rights/Hillary flamage... :-)

Kemp: Drifting to the left. Probably making the same mistake Bush made,
by believing he has to cater to the left to win. (Better
to do what worked for Reagan.) He'll be in good shape
if he doesn't go any further left.
Bennett: Good choice, but will be savaged by press for close friendship
with Limbaugh (IMO). Would be a good running mate with
Kemp, if they agree on prioirities. I'd prefer Bennett/Kemp,
but the other way around is more likely...
Quayle or Buchanan: PR smear job by the media and Hollywood may be
irreparable. Way to go, you ****ing liberals! :-/
Powell: "Token black" charges if a VP candidate, probably wouldn't stick.

I don't perceive that Kemp and Bennett are that far apart; just that Kemp
is more concerned about economics, and Bennett seems more concerned about
the "Culture War". Personally, I agree with Kemp; the government's
stranglehold on the economy has GOT to be stopped, otherwise the
government will keep raising taxes and killing the economy until they're
taking 100% of nothing.

No. Dole will be 73 (I think) in 1996. Much older than Reagan was.
I believe that Reagan was about 68 or so when he was elected. True,
he's still in great shape today, but I just don't think a guy over 70
will get elected. Nobody wants a Prez to kick the bucket while in office...

Which is obviously the best way for you Clinton-bashers to stop Clinton's
programs: Make Congress overwhelmingly Republican. This will pretty much
grind any spending programs to a halt as gridlock sets in again. I think
the government runs a lot better when it doesn't run at all. I'd give
Congress a pay raise if they would work less. It would be better for the
country. :-)
