Component manufacturers need to be shot.

Until now I've been able to ignore it, but the fine line has been crossed.

When it's been 35-40F outside, I've had to open a nearby window AND turn
on the 18" fan next to it and aim it right at myself when playing EQ.
There is no inanimate object in this place generating a noticable amount
of heat except for what's sitting on my desk. One laptop, one 19" CRT
monitor, one desktop system with an AthlonXP, GF4, and 7200RPM HDD.

I will not be needing to turn on the space heater behind me while my
desktop is on this winter. In the summer I expect to have to turn the
desktop OFF at times despite the AC unit that does a pretty damn good job
of cooling off the entire apartment.

And, of course, the next generation of everything is just going to run
even hotter. The cooling unit on the GeForceFX (nv30) is just dandy:
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q4/021118/geforcefx-03.html

What say we halt the speed race for 12 months and all the little engineers
go redesign everything to reduce heat?

What? :P

In all seriousness, I'm glad that they finally went to a two-socket space
deisgn. Anyone who tries to put something next to a GF4 Ti4600 is frickin'
nuts. There just isn't any room, the fan will be right up against the other
card and will get no real airflow. They are finally realizing that and
taking advantage of the fact that no sane person is putting another card
right next to the GF. I hope they can work the noise out a bit, but frankly
I have 5 fans going in the case as it is, plus three 7200 RPM drives
internal and a 7200RPM drive external, plus a Dragon Orb 3 which is loud as
fsck. I don't think it's going to make much of a difference. The fact that
they say the air is hot to the touch is somewhat disturbing, but oh well,
it's performance baby :-) At least they're channeling the air outside of the
computer :-).

In 5 minutes? Probably not. But it would not be at the temperature levels I
want it to be at.

Power supply has two fans in it, then I have one fan in front and two in
back, plus perforation on the bottom of the side panel, such that I get
adequate flow. Fan in front brings air in over the southbridge and RAID
controller chip, also gets some going over the harddrives, PSU sucks up air
and takes it out, fan in back conveniently channels air over the GF4, and
additional air is sucked in through the holes in the lower part of the side
of the case, and brought up over the PCI cards. Air also flows right over
the CPU and out the power supply and other rear fan. I get beautiful
airflow, and it keeps all my temperatures at optimal levels.

Same here- alternating between no heat (besides comp) and cooling fan.

No choice at the moment- with 6 slots my cards are full, and I've got
two more to go in at the moment, and likely a third or fourth soon.

your suggestion a lot more compelling :)

I'll be happy to let you know my P3-850 serves as an air conditioner.
That could explain why this corner is always freezing. Seriously, the
air blowing out of this case is colder than the air surrounding it. Go

You need to get some sleep. It's pathetic. No card like that is going
near my systems. I need all slots. The speed race needs a pause, just
like Nick said.

Then let us, the consumers, give them, the engineers, some time to
construct normalsized cards - like any Ti4200. If we gave them a
couple of months, the Ti4400- and 4600-based cards wouldn't be larger
than any Ti4200. Trust me on this one.

Oh sure, as if the vid cards don't run hot enough now- after this
idea, they will run hotter, wetter and probably have a few vibrating
modes. On the plus side, USB3 might have some more interesting plug

Before you can learn to fly above reality, you have to perch properly.

>BTW, where do I go to get the snore generator removed?

Happily, there is a proven method- 20 years of recovering repressed
childhood memories. As you go through the various causes, you will
eventually reach one about a camping trip. On this camping trip, you
snuck away from the group and went over the hill. There you saw a
glade full of nekkid beauties, each beckoning you to come join them,
but just as you got within arms reach, they all fired up competition
sized chain saws and began trying to attack you. The therapist
will try to get you to see this as a dream, with the chain saw sound
repressed into nothing more than a horrendous snore. That's not
true. It is because your brain thinks it is a dream that it keeps
revisiting the scenario trying to figure it out. The episode in
the woods really happened to you, so just deal with it, move on, and
the snoring will vanish. You should be thankful you weren't on the
Trauma Team carrying out the memory implant. Four of the nymphettes
had accidental loppage of a body part.

PS. Nymphette #317b said to tell you she hopes there's no hard
feelings and still wants to hook up with you. There's some sort of
loud rumbling sound coming from behind her, so I'm not sure it's safe.

LOL! If they had store demonstrations like this, they'd probably sell
more of the fancy cases.

Hmm- maybe they should simplify overclocking- even build it in, and
have a 13/16" spark plug type adjustment, and a case that opens with a
tricky release mechanism. That way when someone wants to crank up
their CPU power, they just pop the hood, insert Mr socket wrench and
torque down on the CPU control. The RAM would become the data
carburetors, and they could start putting differentials on hard drives
so the user can shift gears and have 30,000 RPM's if they needed it
(and the HD's redline allowed it).

made with Virtua-touch material and an infra-red light that keeps it at a set
temperature you determine with a rheostat (safely waterproofed for more 'active'
users) I'll be sending you details on ground, overnight, and drop ship prices.

Whenever I imagine 'drop ship' in regards to packages, I imagine an
airplane flying over your house and a few seconds later, the package
hitting your roof.

Nonono... It involves dropships full of marines and ghosts to ensure your
package gets to you safely. Of course, it doesn't work well when one of
the ghost's other ghost friends sneaks aboard with beer while cloaked.
That's how packages get lost.

I want one of these, with my background in tweaking engines I could make
most people turn green with envy ;)

Anyone want a 386/40 that crunches a SETI unit in about 9 minutes flat?
Downside? you'll have to rebuild it every 24 hours.

As long as it was truly user friendly why shouldn't it shimmy into a
person's lap? Hmm- have to find an unique oscillitory pattern with
the same effect as Harley's and trademark it. Maybe some sort of
infrasonic speaker on the bottom?

oh great... now I"m gettin' all sweaty. Gotta go take a cold shower... or maybe
just stand in Agelmar's case and let the airflow massage my cares away.
