"Gallery" was written long before we learned to love biometric I/D,
the DNA database, the ubiquitous CCTV etc. etc.
Back in the early 1970s, old Iron Curtain countries weren't exactly
fun places for tourists; particularly in view of their almost paranoid
levels of control and surveillance.
It was after visiting Russia and a couple of its satellites that I
wrote "Gallery".
In those far-off times, high levels of control and surveillance in the
Soviet bloc were seen as definite indicators of philosophical and
moral uncertainty. Fortunately, post-9/11, attitudes have changed and
nowadays in the West such controls are regarded as quite
understandable.
Like they say, "we hold these truths to be self-evident..."
("Gallery" is from the "Edge Of The Dark" sessions, an unreleased
collection of over fifty experimental pieces recorded between 1978 and
1981.)
