I have decided to grade the ROLLING STONES RECORD ALBUM COVERS (not the
music, just the covers)
Why? i have no idea. it seemed like a good idea at the time....and i
have too much time on my hands.

ALBUMS:

1964 Englands Newest Hit Makers ABKO

The unruly schoolboy look. B+

1964 12 X 5 ABKCO

OK. B

1965 The Rolling Stones, Now! ABKCO

Shots of the boys in the studio. Nothing special. B-

1965 Out of Our Heads ABKCO

The first great cover. Love the look. A-

1965 December's Children (And Everybody's) ABKCO

One of the best. Great B&W pic, Pefectly framed. A+

1966 Aftermath ABKCO

The great mid-60's out of focus look. (ie Blonde on Blonde) B+

1966 Got Live If You Want It! ABKCO

Never liked it much C+

1967 Between the Buttons [US] ABKCO

Again with the out of focus, this one is fantastic. Looking bleary and
cold in the rain. I hung this on my wall for a year. A+

1967 Flowers ABKCO

Very poppy 1960's B+

1967 Their Satanic Majesties Request ABKCO

The boys look silly in their magician outfits but i like this due to
the fact it originally came out in 3-D, that version gets an A, the
non-3-D gets a B

1968 Beggars Banquet ABKCO

The toilet cover gets an A, the white version B

1969 Let It Bleed ABKCO

Their best album but the cover is only a B

1970 Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! [live] ABKCO

Love it! Giving Charlie the cover is genius and I especially like the
homage to Bob Dylan A+

1996 The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus [live] ABKCO

Nice, B+

1972 Jamming with Edward Rolling Stones

Ehhhh C+

1971 Sticky Fingers Virgin

How can you not love it A+

1972 Exile on Main St. Virgin

Cool and a little disturbing A-

1973 Goats Head Soup Virgin

Kind of freaks me out, why is Mick so happy? B+

1974 It's Only Rock 'N Roll Virgin

Never liked the painting too much B-

1976 Black and Blue Virgin

They look like the aging punks they were B++

1977 Love You Live Virgin

Warhol again, Another one that freaked me out when I was a kid...why is
Mick biting a hand? B++

1978 Some Girls Virgin

The original version (with Marilyn, et al) gets A-/other version B

1980 Emotional Rescue Virgin

Always hated the X-ray thing. D

1981 Tattoo You Virgin

Never cared for this... D++

1982 Still Life [live] Virgin

Average B-

1983 Undercover Virgin

I like this one, it suits the music and is creepy to good effect B++

1986 Dirty Work Virgin

Too day-glo for my tastes C

1989 Steel Wheels Virgin

Boring C-

1991 Flashpoint [live] Virgin

The worst...put SOME effort into this F

1994 Voodoo Lounge Virgin

Hate it F

1995 Stripped [live] Virgin

Nice B

1997 Bridges to Babylon Virgin

Don't like it C

1998 No Security [live] Virgin

B

2004 Live Licks

OK, I love the cheesecake factor and would give it an A but why is the
US version "sanitized" with a bikini top and the UK version (and im
assuming the rest of the world)
gets the actual nude girl, what are we...Mormons? It's a album cover!
UK version gets an A/US version a F as a protest

COMPILATIONS:

1966 Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) ABKCO

They look totally out of place and i like it. A

1969 Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits, Vol. 2) ABKCO

Groovy. A-

1972 Hot Rocks, 1964-1971 ABKCO

B++

1972 More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies) ABKCO

B

1975 Made in the Shade Rolling Stones

B+

1975 Metamorphosis ABKCO

Not as bad as the album, but still D+++

1981 Sucking in the 70's Rolling Stones

C

2002 Forty Licks Virgin

D (OK, we get it, it's their logo, move on)

Next up.... Chicago. Classs dismissed.

I would have to give the white one an A and the inside cover an A

Another A have the postcards on the wall too. Same sort of pictures
used to be at the Seattle Food Fair at the Space Needle sight and I
was very disturbed when I saw them as a child. Glad I'm getting
disturbed by things like that again since I sobered up a couple of
years ago and became a Christian, became to jaded.

Thanks. May the Stones play a nice song for you in your dreams.

LOL -- nice idea. I agree with you about most of them -- especially
Between the Buttons. I do want to add, tho, that the original vinyl
double LP package of More Hot Rocks 2 was pretty well designed.

In this day and age, the Stones could probably get away with an
update of the "Sticky Fingers" packaging in which a rubber dildo
flops out upon opening.

Actually, I'll take that back. Maybe they could've gotten away with
it in 1999.

I agree that the Hot Rocks photos were pretty cool. Almost everything
the Stones did in that period was super cool. I wonder if such a
period of great rock n' roll will ever be repeated by any band. It
may be fundamentally impossible, until a day when everyone who was alive
when the Stones were is dead. Then there'll be some sort of
anachronistic rock revival or something.

The More Hot Rocks cover was a variatun of the original "Necrophilia"
album, before the project was shelved.

nico...

first off, are you a chick that looks like (well nico) or a Greek dude?
anyway, who cares, it don't matter really more important matters in
hand.....

anyway, my "old timey" favs have always been...

1967 Between the Buttons
1967 Flowers
1969 Through The Past Darkly

then....
1971 Sticky Fingers

1974 It's Only Rock 'N Roll

and then...
.
1976 Black and Blue
1978 Some Girls

the reasons have as much to do with memories and stuff, I guess, as
artistic merit but so what.....
