Does anyone have any information on the doo-wop/vocal-group 'The
Chimes' ?

Since there were a lot of 'Chimes' around in the fifties I will try to
be a little more specific. The group I'm interested in recorded the
following 45's on Specialty in 1955/56:

- The Chimes Ring Out/I'm Leaving Baby
- Tears On My Pillow/Zindy Lou
- Pretty Little Girl/Chop Chop
and an unreleased 45 for Dig:
- Jonelle/I Found An Angel

(the above info comes from 'Doo-Wop, the forgotten third of R&R')

and included in their line-up Horace Wooten.

I'd like to know the full line-up, and if there are any more songs
known........

Anyone, please? Thanks, Alex - Amsterdam

Alex & group,

I don't have much on the group, but here are the few scraps
that I can put together.

First of all, this set of Chimes is the same as the Champs who
also backed Tony Allen. There were other groups that backed
him and some of them may have had members of the Chimes
in them.

One backup group for Tony Allen was the Twilighters. The
line-up for that group is: Russell Davis; Rich Hunter; Milton
Hillsman; and Julius High. They were out of Atlanta, Ga.

As for the records:

Specialty 549 was booted as by Tony Allen & The Chimes
"The Chimes"/"I'm Leaving You Baby"
These are unreleased tunes. (the released Specialty 549
is a couple of mambo numbers by J.J. Jones)

"Tears On My Pillow"/"Zindy Lou" by the Chimes
Specialty 555 1955

"Nite Owl"/"I" by Tony Allen & the Champs
Specialty 560 1955

"Especially"/"Check Yourself Baby" by Tony Allen & the Chimes
Specialty 570 1956

"Pretty Little Girl"/"Chop Chop" by the Chimes
Specialty 574 1956

"Losing You Baby"/"Swanee River Rock" by the Chimes
Jay-tee 1000 (date uncertain but 1950's)

"I Found An Angel"/"I'm Dreaming" by Tony Allen
Dig 109 1956

"I Found An Angel"/"Jonelle" by Tony Allen & the Chimes
Dig 148
This record is also a boot as it was never released. The "A"
side is not the same as Dig 109 and the "B" side features
Richard Berry as lead.

This is not complete, as there are many questions unanswered,
but this is going to the group, so maybe some more help will be
forthcoming.

I have a source that agrees with John's statement and adds more that I
cannot guarantee is right. It says that this group is also the same
one that 'Doo-Wop, the forgotten third of R&R' lists as Gene Moore &
the Chimes, who recorded "Only A Dream" b/w "Reap What You Sow" on
Combo in 1955. It also says this same group recorded "Mister Moonglow"
b/w "Need Your Love" as the El Reyes on Jade in 1958. As the Chimes
(with Tony Allen) they also recorded "While I Hold You Tonight" for
Specialty in 1955 and (possibly not with Tony Allen) "Coming Back To You"
on Storm 501, date and flip unknown.
