The answer would be Joey Powers on the Amy label. Went to #10 on the
Billboard Chart in 1963. I am not sure if it's available on CD. Same
storyline as Down In The Boondocks - Billy Joe Royal. Bad boy or poor boy
story. Great song.

Hope this helps;
FJM...

The song title is "Midnight Mary" and it was a top ten hit in 1964 for Joey
Powers. If there was any cover version in the 70s, it didn't hit the charts.

> "Midnight Mary" by Joey Powers was on Billboard's Top 40 in December,
1963, and January and February, 1964. One of the easier ways to obtain
it on CD is the Rhino (#70995) collection "Dick Bartley Presents, Vol.
1".

The song is "Midnight Mary" by Joey Powers, and it is from 1963. It's
available on one of the Dick Bartley One Hit Wonders CDs from Rhino.

True, it's on the Rhino "One Hit Wonders" CD, but if you want the
single (45) version, you can get it on "Teen Idols...for a Moment" on
Collector's Choice MSD-35800, distributed by MCD Special Products
1-800-923-1122.

One qualification: the Bartley collection uses the LP version of "Midnight
Mary." The 45 release (which I like better) is available on Collectors'
Choice Music's CD "Teen Idols -- for a Moment." The CCM release uses a
needledrop for that one track (the only needledrop on the CD), but it is
*very* clean.

Both are monaural.
