But what name had the most songs - I suspect Susie. Yes? and how many. Or
maybe was it Carol?
Even without the variations, I'll bet Mary gets the most mentions.
Here's two more:
Mary Mary The Monkees
Mary in the Morning Ed Ames (??? or somebody a lot like him)

Dion had a song called "Sandy" and it can be found on "Lovers Who Wonder" (ACE CH 163)
LP, the original issue was Laurie 2012. The Impalas did a song "Sandy Went Away" and
it's on "Doo-Wop Honor Roll Of Girls Names Vol. 2" (Adam & Eve 502), which I think was
produced by Ed Engel. Here's another list of girl's names in song titles.

Yeah, I count at least 20 charted singles with the word "Mary" in the
title, so that's probably the name. Those songs include:
The Association - "Along Comes Mary"
The Baja Marimba Band - "Along Comes Mary"
Harry Belafonte - "Mary's Boy Child"
Solomon Burke - "Proud Mary"
The Checkmates, Ltd. featuring Sonny Charles - "Proud Mary"
Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Proud Mary"
James Darren - "Mary's Little Lamb"
Fats Domino - "Little Mary"
The Everly Brothers - "Take a Message to Mary"
Bobby Freeman - "Mary Ann Thomas"
Ronnie Hawkins - "Mary Lou"
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "The Wind Cries Mary"
Brian Hyland - "If Mary's There"
Burl Ives - "Mary Ann Regrets"
Stonewall Jackson - "Mary Don't You Weep"
Al Martino - "Mary in the Morning"
Johnny Mathis - "What Will Mary Say"
Lou Monte - "Lazy Mary"
Ricky Nelson - "Hello Mary Lou"
Joey Powers - "Midnight Mary"
So you were close on "Mary in the Morning" -- it was Al Martino who had the hit.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I'm actually more concerned with cataloging all the data for charted hits;
Billy Brown's song didn't make the R&B Charts or the Pop Charts. If we
opened it up to album tracks, or obscure singles that didn't chart, we
could be here for *decades* just on this one subject.

And there's
Del Shannon - Mary Jane
Del Vikings - Jitterbug Mary
Bill Haley - Mary, Mary Lou
Billy Adams & Rock-A-Teers - Lookin' for Mary Ann
Dedications - Mary Lou
Lee Andrews & Hearts - Bells of St. Mary's
Rainbows - Mary Lee
Ray Charles - Mary Ann
Which raises another important question: Was Del's the first appearance
of Mary Jane as a song title?

Long Tall Sally
Mustang Sally
Sally Go 'Round The Roses
Here's some more:
The Beatles - "Long Tall Sally"
Pat Boone - "Long Tall Sally"
The Cuff Links - "Run Sally Run"
Fats Domino - "Sally Was a Good Old Girl"
Flavor - "Sally Had a Party"
The Jaynetts - "Sally, Go 'Round the Roses"
Little Richard - "Long Tall Sally"
Trini Lopez - "Sally Was a Good Old Girl"
Wilson Pickett - "Mustang Sally"
The Round Robin - "Kick That Little Foot Sally Ann"
>What about Sally?
-snip------
Watch Out, Sally - Diane Renay
(a really great bad-girl song, but she gets her come-uppance in the
end...)
John Frank
