Drove that 'Caddy till he flipped his lid..."
Sure appreciate info on that and the "Lone Star Beer" song if you know
that as well. Thanks, Steve

The singer was Ronnie Hawkins, a great singer on the Roulette label.
I don't know if he wrote it or not.

I believe the original was:
Mary Lou - Young Jessie (Modern 961) released June 1955
Never made the national or r & b charts but was a monster on the
west coast. Background vocals are the Cadets.
Ronnie Hawkins did a cover in 1959 for Roulette, but in my humble
oppinion if pales in comparison to the original. His version did make
both pop and r & b charts.

Artist's real name: Obediah Jessie is credited as author of song.
Note: He also sang later with the Coasters on "Searchin'" and "Youngblood."
Hope someone else can help you with "Lonestar"

If I remember right the original was done by an artist called Young
Jessie.

Also by Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks (soon to become The Band) in 1959, I
think....

It's Ronnie Hawkins who did "Mary Lou". Originally released on
Roulette 4177 first charting on 8/17/59 #26 16 weeks on Billboard Hot
100.

This is going to the group and to Darrell by e-mail.
Darrell:
Sorry to do this to you but you are wrong. Even though the writers
credits for Mary Lou show Ronnie Hawkins as co-writer HE STOLE THE
SONG AND GAVE HIMSELF CREDIT. It was originally done on Modern 961 in
1955 by Young Jessie. Writers credits go to Jessie-Ling. Same song.
We had a thread months ago where someone was trying to say that Ronnie
Hawkins wrote "Mary Lou" and "Forty Days". It was proven, with help
from me, that Hawkins had a habit of stealing songs and taking writers
credit for them, not all of his songs were stolen but he took credit
for a couple of his biggies.
Maybe stolen is a little harsh but this ranks right up there with
Chuck Berry taking writers credit for "My ding-a-ling".

I did not know Chuck Berry took writing credit for "my ding a-ling"
The song was by "The Bees" on Imperial.I believe Dave Barthelomew wrote it.
Berry only added a few verses and left out a few others. The irony of this
,is that it was his only number one song.
