I just saw a video by Dark Throne yesterday (it was called "Secrets ...
something" I don`t remember). I can`t imagine ANYONE listening to
stuff like that? Cannibal Corpse is still okay in my book, but Dark
Throne?? Give me a break! It was impossible to hear the drums 80% of
the time and if you could actually hear them, they sounded like a sub-
way passing you by. It really blew my mind that bands like that get
played on TV (with the crappiest video I`ve ever seen!) while many, many
great bands never even get a record deal.

Opinions anyone?

Darkthrone is notorious for shitty sound quality. It's supposed to sound
"eeee-ville" but it sounds like crap. However, three of their albums do have
good sound. The best sounding one is the debut Soulside Journey which is
because Thomas Skogsberg and Ulf Cederlund (Entombed) produced it. The other
two are the recent albums Panzerfaust and Total Death on the Moonfog label.
It is really annoying sometimes - the worst sounding albums are A Blaze In
The Northern Sky and Under A Funeral Moon - even though I am a Darkthrone fan
I never listen to them because they sound so bad. The drums are meant to have
a techno / ambient feel to them though, which is why they all sound the same
and hence like a subway train, because the band leader Fenriz is really into
techno music.

The only weaker parts of the last two Darkthrone albums are the voices because
Fenriz IMHO is not as good a singer as Nocturno Culto (the guitarist) who sang
the first three albums.

I wouldn't mind seeing black metal played on TV. I've never seen a Darkthrone
video, although I imagine it would be really bad and extremelly low budget to
preserve "underground black fucking metal" sense.

Well, I suspect part of the reason Darkthrone got signed to Moonfog is because
he's good friends with the owner Satyr Wongraven. But also Darkthrone was
pretty big on Peaceville and also because of the trend of black metal they
have commercial value because as far as the Norwegians go, they were one of the
biggest bands (with Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, Immortal, and Enslaved).

I've heard a song off of the new Darkthrone album, "Total Death," and I thought
that it was pretty good.. it all depends on your personal taste.. some
people just don't like blackmetal, and I can kind of understand why.. I'm
not into that much of it myself...

I found that Panzerfaust and Total Death are the best Darkthrone albums and
the most "individual" (well, about as individual as being a total Celtic Frost
worship band can get). Transilvanian Hunger is alright too. The first three
albums musically I don't consider to be nearly as good although I'll listen to
the first album most often of the first three, but this was back when they were
a death metal band and not black at all.

1st & 2nd are the best DT albums. Under & Trans sound like they were
recorded through a telephone during a looooong distance call.
Panzer ir really Fenriz愀 solo-album. Total Death is OK, but I fear
that they have lost their magic (&interest).

I惴 waiting for Goatlord anxiously....

1st is the best sounding and has the best performance but there are tons of
other much better death metal records out there.

And A Blaze In The Northern Sky doesn't?

Not only do they sound like they were recorded during a telephone during a
long distance call, it sounds like they were calling an underdeveloped third
world country through their local telephone provider and both sides were using
a cordless phone provided by NYNEX and the cordless phone was right on top of
Nocturno Culto's amp (and you know what a big magnetic field amplifiers can
generate) and the 4 track they were using to record in the other country was
recording on a Ferric Oxide tape by Sony.

Fenriz has been known to be more into rave and techno / ambient these days than
black metal. Maybe that is why Kvuldelv joined Satyricon, just for a change in
scenery... But I like Total Death and Panzerfaust most. The style is very
limited though and I'd prefer if only Darkthrone did this style and no other
bands, but I'm sure there are plenty of Darkthrone clones.

I'm not, but I'm sure that when it comes out I'll still get it anyway. It's
just that one album they recorded between the first two albums right?

On the whole, yes. But very few bands have managed to come up with a
classic track like Cromlech is. Plus Fenriz´s drumming & lyrics are also
very enjoyable on the debut.

No it was only a local call.

Ha, ha. correct!! (How did you know ;)

Very true. Fenriz plays drums in Valhall (DOOM!) still though.

Yep, that´s why I´m waiting for it. I hope to hear some inspired drumming
courtesy of Mr. Nagell. Plus the music should be interesting, because
I heard some of those tracks live in ´91. (the 2nd to last gig DT
played ever).
