I just picked up a couple of new albums this weekend and thought I'd
throw out some comments on them...
Don Dokken - Up From The Ashes:
I think the album is quite good. Damn good actually. The sound is much
the same as the original Dokken was. However, keep in mind that it took
TWO guitarists to fill the empty space left by George Lynch. They did
a pretty good job, but in many places it sounds like they are trying too
hard to sound like the old Dokken, i.e. like the guitarists are trying to
be George Lynch clones. I'm not trying to rage on John Norum and Billy
White. They are both very good musicians. It's just that many of the
solos are too reminiscent of George for me, being that I'm a mega fan
of his. But all in all, the album is really good, and if you liked old
Dokken you will most certainly like this. My favorite song (right now)
is "Give It Up". Also, much of the lyrics are in direct reference to
the Dokken split-up. It appears Don is still pretty worked up over that.
Now, if "Wicked Sensation" (the new Lynch Mob album) is as good/better, I'll
be happy.
Ratt - Detonator:
I was sort of hesitant about getting this one because I thought their last
album, "Reach For The Sky", was pretty weak. But I'm happy to say that I
wasn't disappointed. The album as a whole is very strong. There are 1 or
2 tracks that are a little bit more commercial sounding than I like, but
otherwise it's pretty good. If I had to sum up this album, I'd say it's
a cross between "Invasion of Your Privacy" and "Dance". But definitely
an improvement over "Reach..."
Thats all. Any comments?

P.S. Queensryche "Empire", although different, is definitely KILLER!

I am (obviously) a mega fan of George's as well. Like I said, George
Lynch is God.
I can't wait to get both of the albums, but guess what cocky lead singers
I will be less inclined to get if I only have $15 with me????
I guess I'm being a little hard on Don because I'm pissed that the band
broke up. I don't know nor do I care whose fault it was, I'm just pissed
that they broke up. And I never got to see them headline. GRRRRRRR.....

I have heard that the new Lynch Mob album, "Wicked Sensation", will
be out on October 19. I can't wait!!!!

I'm kind of pissed that they broke up too, but as long as the new Lynch
Mob album really rocks I'll be happy because two great bands will have
emerged from one. (As opposed to Van Halen, where two weaker bands
emerged from one. IMHO)

Neither did I. But at least I saw them at Monsters of Rock with VH and
the Scorps. Truly an awesome concert. When Dokken played it started
raining and stuff, and George was really pissed off. At one point, he was
totally yelling at his guitar tech and pushed him around a couple of times.
But when they played "Heaven Sent", the sun emerged and the rain
stopped. It was classic. It was also at that concert that I caught George's
beaded bracelet that he threw out to the crowd :-) :-) :-)
