my cable system just redid their channel lineup and so now, as i am flipping
through, the country channel is stuck in the middle of some good channels.
occasionally, i'll stop to see what this country music is all about.
after all, i think it's the most popular form of music now. anyways,
i was just noticing that most all country music guys have long hair now,
whereas, in rock-n-roll, many guys now have short hair. even ones that
had long hair, now have short hair. not that i think appearances have
anything to do with the music a person creates, but doesn't this seem
like a complete role reversal between country music stars and rock
stars? btw, country music is really lame. aside from the occasional
talented singer or talented guitarist, the music is very boring and
has no energy at all.

From my limited experience with country, the focus seems to be more on the
lyrics than the music itself. To me, the music is very simple and sounds the
same (though that can be argued for anything you do not listen to regularly).
It does not have the complexity great metal has. However, I grew up on some
'70s country. I think that stuff rules, partially because of sentimental
value, partially because the music sounds good to me. Sorry for the lack of
metal content! Later.

Anyone think "Bleeding Me" is the best Metallica song ever. "Sad But True"
was once called the "Kashmir" of the 90's; well to ME, "Bleeding Me" is
the "Free Bird", or (maybe) the "Stairway" of the 90's. I LOVE this song!

was not called the Kashmir of the 90's, The Unforgiven was. Check out A
Year-and-a-Half if you doubt me. Bleeding Me is just so damn good that I
can't stop listening to it, over and over. Each time I hear new stuff.

It might be a bit early to call it the best song ever, (remember One, Master,
Orion, Fade, To Live, Unforgiven......you get the point). I do think it is
top ten though. If it stands the test of time and is as good to listen to a
year from now, I might even put it in top five. It's easy when new music
comes out to say "this song is best ever..one of the best they've ever done,
etc." but it's wise to wait until the novelty of just having a new Metallica
CD wears off and you can place the songs within the context of the history of
the band a bit more clearly. Just my opinion.
Pete.

It's my favorite song on the new album. In fact, I would
have to say it's my favorite song on the last TWO albums.
Right now only songs I like are:

Bitch
2x4
Hero
Bleed
Hate
Thorn
Torn

I also recall it being SBT, not Unforgiven.

Bleeding Me is easily, in my opinion the strongest song on this album.
It gets better ever time I listen to it. As far, as the the best
Metallica song ever, that's a tough call. In some ways ways that's
like comparing apples and oranges considering the change in musical
style.

I don't know if I'd call it the best Metallica song ever, but the song ROCKS. Probably
the strongest part of the album is about 5:00 into "Bleeding Me" when James sings " I
am the beast that feeds the beast..." Terrific music!!!! "Hero" also has a pretty
damn good bridge. Load rules!!!

Indeed...well put. The consideration here would probably be best
served on a per album basis. (Considering their varied range and style.)
I rank Metallica on the level of the great bands of the past who weren't
afraid to experiment with their sound in order to not only give the listener
something besides "last album: warmed over +2" but something that showed a
multi-faceted artist influenced by all sorts of music. (Believe it or not,
Heavy Metal didn't come first...heh.) Goodness knows, I miss the heroic days
of "Master of Puppets", when Metallica rode the crest of a then booming style
of music. (and contributed to the boom in many respects.) But as many have
said before, it's been done. I would be much more disappointed with a
continuation (well in light of the Black Album a return..) to the cookiecutter
metal of the 80s...(ever notice the song structure of MOP and AJFA seemed to
be almost parallel...right down to the location on the CD of the
instrumental?..fast song, title track...etc. etc..that's not to take away from
their power and greatness, but it does undercut the need to branch out.)

The point is...(heh..never thought I'd get there, eh?)..."Load" is perhaps the
finest work I've heard in quite some time. In the stale, talentless age of
grunge, we have a musical triumph of the highest order. Deeply poignant
lyrics, mature subject matter, varied composition styles..."Load" has it all.
Ever since I got the album, I've listened to it throughout. Unlike most
albums, I didn't "scan" the CD initally to "sneak a peek" at the album....I
started at track 1 and went through the whole thing completely in awe....it's
a rare occasion an album grabs me like that...(shame too, because it would
spur more talent and less stupidly mindless angst...)
As for their image...yes, and? They have to look at themselves in the
mirror....they can dress and cut their hair the way they choose, as far as I'm
concerned. It's indeed a superficial listener who considers a band "cool"
because they wear black leather jackets and have long hair and beards. I
don't think there is any "Samson-esque" attachment to Metallica's hair length
in relation to talent...(that is to say cutting their hair didn't make them
put out substandard, weak material..)

I am glad to see positive comments about the album coming on this group,
though. Makes for a lively contrast to the nauseating "true fans" belittling
Metallica because they didn't put out Orion II (can't top Orion,
folks...hehe.)

I agree. Don't you think it is so Sabbath-y? This is the most prominent
influence I hear on this song (to a lesser degree the Outlaw torn).

It's about time someone had something truly intelligent to say on this
news group. The senseless Metallica bashing is getting old and tiresome.
I totally agree with your post, it is a refreshing change from the much
of the mindless commentary I ususally sift through here each day. Most of
which is not worthy of response.

P.S. Bleeding and Hero are instant classics.
