>Monsters of Rock Oxford, ME 1988
>Was anyone else at this HELLISH show?
>Did anyone else stay for the whole show
>in the rain and lightning. I still hold all
>other outdoor shows against this.
I have so many memories of that weekend i don't know where to start.
First off, i went with four or five other people from manchester,n.h. we
left friday night in a beat up old van, it was such a piece of shit that
we GAVE a ticket to a guy who knew how to work on motor vehicals in case
we broke down. Anyways, we decided to go the back way, because of the
traffic nightmares they had predicted on the radio. we drove north on 93
to the white mountains and cut across the kangamangus highway, which is
this twisting, turning old scenic road through the mountains. We broke
down about 20 miles in, after about two hours our trusty mechanic had
the van fixed.
we made it to oxford around 3:30 saturday morning. It was one big
fucking party. So instead of getting some sleep like any normal person
would do, i decided to take a hit of acid. here it is, 6:00 in the
morning and i'm tripping my brains out. The weather wasn't bad for
kingdom come, metallica, and dokken, but after that it rained like a
motherfucker for the scorpions and van halen.
Metallica was the best, as far as i was concerned. they hadn't
released AJFA yet, so they played all the old shit.
I stayed for the whole show, by the time van halen came on, there
was a lake from the front of the stage all the way back to the mixer
board. If i had to guess, i bet there was only a thousand people left by
then. When we left it took 3 hours to get out of the parking lot, what a
fucking mess. we lost one person, could't find him so we left without
him. Everybody was sick for about two weeks.
It was the biggest, wettest, most fucked up outdoor show i had been
to until woodstock in 94, but thats another story.

Leave right after work Fri. afternoon from Ft. Stewart GA. Drive
about 12 hours to Miami with a friend (he was major into Scorpions).
Run over one of those U-haul blankets on the Interstate. Smell
something burning after a while, stop and find the blanket on fire and
stuck to the underside of the car. Get that all square, then forget to
look at the gas gauge for a few hours and run clean out of gas in the
middle of nowhere. Grab a couple of brews and start walking. Cop
passes and turns his head while we throw our beers in the ditch (about
the only good luck we had the whole weekend, a cool cop). He gives us
a ride to the nearest gas station, then back to my friend's car.
We make it to the concert site just as the sun's coming up, still
drinking. People are already there raising hell. We layed on the hood
and slept for maybe 15 minutes. I bought a T-shirt from a scalper. We
started counting our money and realized we didn't have enough money
for tickets. I had to sell my T-shirt for a $5 loss so we'd have
enough to get in.
They opened the gates at around 10:30, and it was already Fla.
hot. We got to our seats, laid down, and slept for an hour or so. A
wise move by the Metallica crew, they would carry their equipment
boxes (with the band logo stenciled on the sides) accross the front of
the stage. Everytime they did this, the crowd went nuts. It was pretty
cool, as Metallica wasn't all over the media yet. Kingdome Clone was
OK, but nothing special. It was surreal seeing Metallica, as this was
my first time to see them. They did a good show, and I remember trying
my best to make myself remember the new song they played, Harvester of
Sorrow, because the new album wouldn't be out for a few more months.
Dokken followed, concentrating on their heavier tunes. After they
played the instrumental Mr. Scary, G. Lynch and his roadie almost got
in a fight on stage. He threw his guitar at him and was yelling and
pushing him around until he got offstage.
While waiting for Scorpions, it seems some people got bored.
Accross the stadium from where we sat, a little food / beer fight
started. We watched it spread accross the whole side of the stadium,
laughing at the silliness. Then someone on our side decided to join
the fun, tossing his shoe onto the crowd on the field. Than started
about an hour long battle. The entire stadium was just throwing shit.
Shoes, shirts, hot dogs, beer, whatever. I saw people get hit with
full cups of beer thrown from the top of the stands. Fucking missiles.
I got hit with a mustar soaked hot dog (still have mustard stains on
my jeans). After a while, my friend and I had to take turns watching
out for flying shit, because our necks started hurting from turning
back. The stadium was littered. It was good entertainment for a while,
but got old fast. Some guy came out and said the Scorpions would not
play unless the madness stopped. After another 15 min. or so, it did.
I don't remember anything about the Scorpions set, I was sleeping
awake at that point.
We left after the Scorps for our 2nd all night drive. Had to stop
at a rest stop to sleep, hot as hell and no AC. We made it back to the
barracks around 8am on Sunday, hung-over and all, and slept all day.
Furor
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Blah
We tried to leave when it started pouring and ended up sitting in the car
going NOWHERE for two hours or so. We'd roll down the windows and listen to
the Scorpions go on stage for about 2 minutes, then lightning would strike
and there would be silence for half an hour then they'd come back. When we
go almost to the road a cop told us that there wsa an accident and that we
couldn't leave if we wanted to, so they actually let us back in and we saw
the end of the Scorpions set. A couple of hours later all the lights went
out and the thousand or so people left groaned collectively before Van Halen
"erupted" onto the stage. Sammy Hagar said he felt REALLY bad and that
they'd play as long as there were people still standing. We knew he was
lying, but at that point we'd take what we could get. I know people that
went to the Foxboro show and several of them passed out with HEATSTROKE, I'm
not sure who had it worse!
