Lars stole the name of Metallica from a metal-fanzine editor named Ron Quintanna who
aksed Lars is he should name his magazine Metal Mania or Metallica. Lars told the guy
that Metal Mania was a better name and then turned around and named the band Metallica.

You'd have to go to Ron if you wanted to know where he came up with the name, Metallica.
Possibly from the classic metallurgy book, De Re Metallica, and possibly a simple
variation of the adjective, metallic.

Metallica is NOT, however, a combination of 'metal' and 'vodka.' Don't let anyone tell
you that. That was a rumor pushed by Dave Mustaine after he was kicked out of the band.

Speaking of Dave, he came up with the name Megadeth after looking through a political
brochure by California Senator Alan Cranston which read, "The arsenal of megadeath can't
be rid of no matter what the peace treaties come to," which is also used in the Megadeth
song, "Set the World Afire." As you might know, megadeath is a unit used in nuclear war
meaning 'one million deaths.' Dave said that he spells the name of the band
phonetically because the definition is the same as the one you will find in the
dictionary, and that he wants to leave the audience shell-shocked after every live
performance.

I hope this helps.

I don't know if this is true but according to a book called "Metallica
the Frayed Ends of Metal" by Crocker, "Megadeth" was from some
anti-nuclear brochure by a senator named Alan Cranston who "warned of
the millions of deaths (megadeaths) that would result from a
thermonuclear war." Then Dave just dropped the "a" in death...
