Thanks to whoever suggested picking up Helloween's latest
(Better than Raw). It's awesome! That last album I heard
from these guys was Keeper of the 7 keys pt.2. I'm thinking
about buying all the ones I missed in between these two. Any
suggestions?

Well, I love the Keeper albums, and Pink Bubbles Go Ape(hands down
weirdest title I've ever heard) has some good stuff as well. Master of
the Rings wasn't bad, but it's my least favorite of those I've heard...

I would go out and get yourself "The Time Of The Oath", it's the best
Helloween album of all IMO. Also, get "Master Of The Rings" (my second
fave), but make sure and try to get the Castle w/the bonus disc one.
There's some great stuff on that 2nd CD. Those 2 also feature Andi Deris
on vocals. Since you've already got the next best ones (BTR and
Keepers), then I would suggest "Chameleon", which is a lot different
than the others, but still OK (not great, just decent. The sound is
similar to newer Savatage). I would avoid at all cost the "Pink Bubbles
Go Ape", which IMO is pop drivel at its upmost. Both of those feature
Kiske before he left. There's also solo albums available by both Kiske
(Instant Clarity) and Deris (Come In From The Rain) that were done
recently. I recommend getting the Deris CD - great melodic metal. I
haven't heard the Kiske CD, but I've heard from reviews and other people
that it's very disappointing. (Gee, I'm not surprised.)

Whoa, you like MotR better than the Keepers albums? Oh well, to each his
own I guess...

Hmm, again we differ. While PBGA is certainly nowhere near either
Keepers, I certainly prefer it to MotR...

Check out Gamma Ray's "Somewhere Out in Space." (Kai Hansen). It is
a very good album, some of the transitions aren't the best, but it's one
of the best, I've heard in a while. BTW thanks Gary (M.M.W.) this was a
good suggestion.

Yes, I know I'm probably in the minority in relation to this, but I'd
take Deris and Grapow over Kiske and Hansen anyday. There's something
about Kiske's voice I don't like as much as most of you. To me he's a
Geoff Tate, Tony Harnell type rip-off. I don't think he could hold the
jockstrap of either of those two. And I think Grapow is very underrated.
It seems like Hansen and Weikath get all the props, but this guy can
shred with the best of them. You guys oughta check out his solo release
"4 Seasons Of Life". If that doesn't convince you that he's a great
guitarist, then I don't know what will.

Pink Bubbles Go Ape over MotR, Danny?? To each his own, indeed. :-)
I've read in interviews with the band, that when asked about PBGA, that
they were a bit embarrased about even talking about it, because it's so
un-Helloween like. I feel the same way. Oh well, we each have different
tastes. See ya.

Nothing wrong with that, he reminds me a fair amount of Bruce at times
as well. Andy Deris has a vocal style I don't like, don't know what to
call it, just not my style.

Hansen and Weikath are easily a couple of the best guitarists I've
heard. I rank them as high as Randy Rhoads and Mike Denner, and that's
about as high as I can rate someone. Haven't heard much Grapow, but just
based on MotR I'd never let him anywhere near a band that had the
talents of either Weikath or Hansen. My dad loves Keepers era Helloween,
but when I played him MoTR he didn't think I'd got the right tape. I
told him they had a different vocalist, but the reason he asked was that
the music sounded nothing like the amazing guitar work on Keepers 1-2.
Neither of us though the band sounded even close to the way they had,
either vocally or musically. Sort of like Maiden with Blaze and Gers
actually.... Come on, Perfect Gentleman?

It does sound better than MotR I take it?

Yes, I prefer Kiske's style to Deris's, and I consider Hansen miles
ahead of Grapow. But oh well...

Man! I love Helloween!
Get Time Of The Oath , Master Of The Rings and High Live which is the
2cd live recording from the time of the oath tour. Chameleon from 93 is
where Michael Kiske's warped influence came in although it still has
some great highlights , pink bubbles go ape is probably the last cd to
get..it's got some good tracks but in regards to helloween's best albums
it's not up there at all!

I Love Andi Deris's voice , and his solo album is amazing! Great music! I have
no problem with Kiske's voice but i have a problem with him! He's F**ked in
the head! Go and read some interviews with the bitter guy....he's become
involved in some weird cult and his head is F**ked! Vocally he's a big
influence on me , but it was too limiting....all that high pitch gets
limiting....Deris is a great singer , much more versatile but more importantly
is an AMAZING frontman. The guy is a legend!

#1 , I LOVE MOTR
#2 , Roland Grapow can play anything Kai Hansen can play. I feel he is
AMAZINGLY underrated. His solo CD IS testament to that , a melodic and fast
player with great tone. His work on Better Than Raw and TOTO is amazing.....

What the hell's wrong with PG? I love it! Don't let the bands humour turn you
away!

Err what the hell's wrong with MOTR? Soul Survivor? Where The Rain Grows?
Secret Alibi? These are amazing songs man!

I just don't like his voice.

I take it he got better after MotR? Cause if not, I'm gonna seriously
have to doubt that statement...

Okay, but not his work on MotR...

> What the hell's wrong with PG? I love it! Don't let the bands humour turn you away!

Not just the stupid lyrics, it's the music. It sucks! I don't mind the
bands's humor, but when the music is lame I don't wanna hear it.

> Err what the hell's wrong with MOTR? Soul Survivor? Where The Rain Grows?

Yeah, those songs aren't bad, but they're nowhere near as good as
Twilight of the Gods, or Eagle Fly Free, or several other Kiske/Hansen
era songs. Grapow doesn't sound near as good as Hansen, and I don't like
Deris's vocals.

I agree 10000%. Very well said. I am a HUGE Andi Deris fan. In fact,
I've been following him since his days with Pink Cream 69, and was so
disappointed when Maiden passed him up, but flabbergasted when he joined
Helloween. He is the ideal frontman. I also love his solo album "Come In
From The Rain" - an instant classic. Unlike Kiske, he has range. He can
go both high and low with the best of them. I can go on and on praising
this guy, but my words alone won't even do justice as to what a legend
and great singer this guy is!!

>I have no problem with Kiske's voice but >i

Again, right on. I'm partial to the type of vocal style that Kiske does.
I've always loved that high pitched style (Harnell is my idol, vocally),
but with Kiske, it seems like you just get the same 'ol monotone pitch
that gets very old, very quickly. I would much rather hear guys like
Alder, Tate, etc.. As for his personality, I've heard some horror
stories about what he has become. There has even been some talk in this
NG about him replacing Blaze - big mistake IMO. They're better off
getting a guy like a Tony Martin or Dougie White, even though they
probably wouldn't be the ideal replacement, but definitely not Kiske.
