Trivia Question Time!

Has there ever been more than 2 guitarists in Maiden at any one time?
Either in the studio or on stage actually playing with them?
Discounting the Donington gig with Adrian.

AND, I didn't mean Bruce either!

So, we're not counting Adrian @ Donington and Bruce either.

Well, Dave and Adrian played in the "Stars" project back in the 80's, and
that featured a ton of guitar players. I used to have the video that showed
how they made the song, but I can't find it unfortunately. It wasn't that
bad. For me the highlights were Dave and Adrian playing their harmony, Rob
Halford laying down a monster vocal track (that didn't get used in the
song), Geoff Tate singing at the top of his lungs while his headphones were
blasting the track, Dio trying to get Don Dokken to sound more like... Dio!,
a guy going "Wow!", as George Lynch finished his solo, and when Yngwie was
playing his solo, there was a guy looking on probably thinking "I can do
that". Does anyone remember this? I would love to get a copy of that video
again!

This was from 1986. Remember We Are The World? Well, a whole bunch of
heavy rock/metal guys got together to put a song together for famine relief.
It started with Vivian Campbell and Jimmy Bain who were in Dio at the time
attending some benefit in L.A. I think, and they asked Dio to help so
naturally he takes over. The project was called "Hear 'n Aid" and the song
was called Stars. The song is actually not bad (Bain/Campbell/Dio), and is
basically played by the Dio band along with Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot) on
drums. The featured vocalists were:
Dio
Dave Meniketti
Rob Halford
Kevin Dubrow
Eric Bloom
Paul Shortino
Geoff Tate

The song has 6, 12 bar guitar solos played by:
Craig Goldy
Eddie Ojeda (all guitarists in the world can play better than this guy!)
Vivian Campbell
Brad Gillis
Neal Schon
George Lynch
Carlos Cavazo
Yngwie Malmsteen
Buck Dharma from Blue Oyster Cult
All guitar melody lines on choruses played by Adrian and Dave

The video had all this guys playing a full 12 bars. It was pretty cool.
Fortunately I still have the LP in pretty good shape. The rest of the album
was filled with songs "donated" by Accept, Dio, Hendrix, Kiss, Motorhead,
Rush, Scorpions, and Y&T. Pretty cool actually.

Don't know about that, but they have had two guitarists and a keyboard
player, back in their early days.

LOL! What answer? I'm asking everyone and anyone if there was ever a
time that Maiden had more than 2 guitarists playing with them, not
counting Adrian @ Donington, and Bruce to?

What RUSH song did they donate? It's very strange that I don't
remember _that_, so it musta been something that they had already
written/released.

I don't know about three guitarists, but I did find a line-up where they
only had one guitarist:
at the end of 1976, Maiden was:
Dennis Wilcock - vocal
Steve Harris - bass/vocal
Ron Matthews - drums
Dave Murray - guitar

and in 1977 with Thunderstick on drums.

got this info from the family tree that came with a Real Dead One...
I bet a lot of people also didn't know that Dave left Maiden in 1977 to play
with Urchin (wow, that's a familiar name) and then later that year to rejoin
with Maiden...

Heh - Hear 'n aid was actually kind of cool - Rush donated the live version of "Distant Early Warning" from their Grace Under
Pressure tour. The actual song "Stars" was pretty damned cool - it was neat to hear Dio and then Rob Halford, and then laugh at Don
Dokken.

The video for that song was just great, a who's who of 80's metal bands - of course the song and project got no attention, I think
by the time Dio got to finish the project, people had been going "Africa who?" And didn't really care anymore......

So did I, I've got that big family tree on my wall, I know it like the back
of my hand.(It could do with an update though.)

Hmm, that's a good idea, I could print out a big family tree and put it
on my wall, not like I don't already know most of the lineups but it'd
br cool.

Yeah, maybe I should bet that one enlarged. I'd need updating anyway if
Blaze were to leave, so I may leave it a while.

Good answer! Even though the Phantom played keys for them on the 7th
Son tour, he was never an official member of the band. Hey, now
that's keepin' an eye out, Tom. Good job!

Yeah, I did know, but that goes rather unnoticed, since Maiden never really
did anything meaningful back then.
