Can you remember your first experience of Iron Maiden ?

I'm a little bored, so I thought I'd do a bit of rambling <G>

I remember way back in 1980, about a year and a half before I got into
metal, seeing an album cover in a record shop and thinking - How the
hell can anybody listen to music that has a cover like that ?!?. I was
11 years old, and into stuff like The Specials and Madness (still am,
actually !). That album, of course, was Iron Maiden.

My first actual listening experience with Maiden was in '82. A friend
gave me a very bad recording of The Number Of The Beast on tape - I
gotta admit, I was not too impressed. I'd just gotten into Metal, and
mainly listened to Motorhead, Demon, Gillen etc. Maybe it was the lousy
recording, I don't know. It just didn't do anything for me. It took
until '83, and the 7" single The Trooper, to get me into Maiden. Even
then, I only really bought the single because of the superb cover -
still one of my favourites. Piece Of Mind clinched it for me - I was a
Maiden fan !

However, it wasn't until 1988 that I saw them live for the first time.
20 August 1988 to be exact - at the Monsters Of Rock at Castle
Donington. It was also my first ever Donington (I've been to each one
since) and it was a cracking day. I remember pretty much ignoring
Helloween and Guns n' Roses as I didn't know any of their stuff. I
thought Megadeth were brilliant, I had just discovered 'em. Dave Lee
Roth too was great. Wasn't too impressed with Kiss tho, this was the
period of Crazy Nights - what a shitty album !

I remember being being so excited before Maiden came on, I almost
puked!!. It was a helluva crush too, and I wasn't at the front ! I
thought they played an absolute blinder, the only downer being the
sound. It was rather windy, so it was being blown all over the place,
but I think the crowd made up for it. I know my throat was hoarse from
singing ! To think, that was nine and a half years ago, it feels so
recent.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, and thanks for reading. :o)

The first time I 'd heard of Maiden was when I saw that album cover in a record
store also, I was 13. I was already into Priest, Motorhead, Black Sabbath,
etc. I thought it was cool enough to check out, so I bought it. The first
time I listened to Phantom of the Opera, I was a Maiden fan.

It was back in 1986. I was already into metal for about 2 years but I was
more into KISS, AC/DC, DIO, Accept and Judas Priest. There were so many
metal bands all around that I simply missed maiden. But once I've
occationaly heard Aces High I became 100% maiden fan.

The first time I ever heard Maiden was over this friends house in 1982. He
had had the Album Killers and Iron Maiden for some time, but I had never
bothered to listen to them. At the time (i was 12) I would look at the cover
of killers and see how much stuff i could find in it. I loved the aspect of
the shadowy birds and cat on the roof tops and all. When I first listened to
them I had mixed emotions about Maiden. The more I went over there and
listened to it, the more I understood how different and unique Maiden was.
By the time Beast came out I was hooked. The rest is history.
The thing that I used to love about Maiden was going down to a "good"
record store and finding the import singles. It was like, WOW, I found a
"new" Maiden Album! Now that you can get them all on the 2nd CD in the
Castle releases, it's less a thrill then say 12 years ago, but it does bring
back memories.
Incidently the 1st Maiden show I ever went to was during the World Slavery
Tour with Twisted Sister opening. This show ranks in my top 3 concerts ever
seen. The only thing I didn't like too much was TS. I mean, I liked them at
the time but they were on stage for 55 minutes and played 6 songs. It was
like, play a song, talk for 10 minutes, play a song, talk for 10 minutes,
over and over. Anyway, that's my Maiden experience. Pretty simple if you
ask me.

The first time I heard Maiden was in 92 on some boring music video show. They
always played crap (Roxette every day). Then one day, I switched to that
channel for no apparent reason, and there it was : Lithiium by Nirvana. I
thought : well this is cool and sat down. Then they played Be quick or be
dead and I said to my brother : buy that it's fucking cool. so he did.

Now i have all exept Iron maiden and Number of the beast.

Mine was when Fear of the Dark came out. One of my friends was already
into Maiden and I listen to the CD and I loved it. I own almost all
their stuff now.

1988, 7th son of a 7th son came out and I friend of mine told me to listen
to it. I did it. Today I still think it's their best album.

Someone at school made me listen to Somewhere in Time. It
was only a brief listen, and I thought the covers were too
speculative. In 88 the video of Can I Play With Madness was
everywhere. I thought it was good, but still I thought the
covers were too speculative, and all these carrot brains were
walking about in their Maiden T-shirts and Jackets, and
it pulled me off.
In 1990 I heard Holy Smoke, and it was cool. At this time the
carrot brains had left Maiden. Later that week I bought NPFTD,
and it was really amazing. Later I found out it was the worst
album.

My first experience was 1983 I bought Piece of Mind I was 13 I thought that
it was so dark and unique to the things I was listening to at the time.
Primarily Kiss, Ozzy, Crue, etc. I really quit listening to maiden around
the time Somewhere in Time came out. I did check out Fear of the Dark and I
really did like that. I havent heard anything recent from them. That Blaze
guy looks like a dork. He may be a god for all I know. Without Bruce I
couldnt see really listening to them again. Althoough I listen to the first
album up to powerslave. Does this Blaze guy suck or what? Up the vintage
Irons mate.

Mine was when my cousin introduced me to The Number of the Beast album when I
was 12 years old in 82. It took me all the way until Powerslave came out to
really get into the older stuff with Paul singing. I first saw Maiden live that
same year on the beast on the road tour, but the best was the world piece tour
in 83. NOTHING beats hearing Where Eagles Dare and To Tame a Land live! I
still love old Maiden, and always will. My favorite records are: IRON MAIDEN
and PIECE OF MIND. I don't like anything post-Powerslave.

When I was living in China, they had this small shop selling destroyed (ie
taken off the market) CD's that were all 'cut'... ie that had a notch cut
on the end of the CD. I picked up Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and LOVED
it. I tried to get as much Maiden stuff as I could from then on.

That's incredible that you could get Iron Maiden material
in China!

Up the freaking Irons~!

Summer of '81 (I think), at Le Club Montreal in Montreal, Canada,
during their "Killers" tour; leaning right up on stage, high fiving
Dave Murray, watching a VERY young Adrian Smith looking scared
shitless, and listening to Paul DiAnno sound like a garbage disposal
with a rusted spoon stuck inside. It was THE BEST!!!
(BTW, I have pictures from that show...)

It happened on a summer day in 1982. I was looking for something
different than hard rock -- became too boring. Different than the stuff
they played on the Dutch radio. So as I was browsing the rock LPs my eye
was caught by the NOTB cover. At that time I'd never listened to their
songs before, I only knew they were doing something heavy. Anyway, next
album was Killers and when the release of POM was due, I was totally
hooked. The energy that radiated from their dynamical songs were very
attractive to me.

Bye, Eddie
