I'm a little bored, so I thought I'd do a bit of rambling <G>
I remember way back in 1980, about a year and a half before I got into
metal, seeing an album cover in a record shop and thinking - How the
hell can anybody listen to music that has a cover like that ?!?. I was
11 years old, and into stuff like The Specials and Madness (still am,
actually !). That album, of course, was Iron Maiden.
My first actual listening experience with Maiden was in '82. A friend
gave me a very bad recording of The Number Of The Beast on tape - I
gotta admit, I was not too impressed. I'd just gotten into Metal, and
mainly listened to Motorhead, Demon, Gillen etc. Maybe it was the lousy
recording, I don't know. It just didn't do anything for me. It took
until '83, and the 7" single The Trooper, to get me into Maiden. Even
then, I only really bought the single because of the superb cover -
still one of my favourites. Piece Of Mind clinched it for me - I was a
Maiden fan !
However, it wasn't until 1988 that I saw them live for the first time.
20 August 1988 to be exact - at the Monsters Of Rock at Castle
Donington. It was also my first ever Donington (I've been to each one
since) and it was a cracking day. I remember pretty much ignoring
Helloween and Guns n' Roses as I didn't know any of their stuff. I
thought Megadeth were brilliant, I had just discovered 'em. Dave Lee
Roth too was great. Wasn't too impressed with Kiss tho, this was the
period of Crazy Nights - what a shitty album !
I remember being being so excited before Maiden came on, I almost
puked!!. It was a helluva crush too, and I wasn't at the front ! I
thought they played an absolute blinder, the only downer being the
sound. It was rather windy, so it was being blown all over the place,
but I think the crowd made up for it. I know my throat was hoarse from
singing ! To think, that was nine and a half years ago, it feels so
recent.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings, and thanks for reading. :o)

The first time I 'd heard of Maiden was when I saw that album cover in a record
store also, I was 13. I was already into Priest, Motorhead, Black Sabbath,
etc. I thought it was cool enough to check out, so I bought it. The first
time I listened to Phantom of the Opera, I was a Maiden fan.

It was back in 1986. I was already into metal for about 2 years but I was
more into KISS, AC/DC, DIO, Accept and Judas Priest. There were so many
metal bands all around that I simply missed maiden. But once I've
occationaly heard Aces High I became 100% maiden fan.

Someone at school made me listen to Somewhere in Time. It
was only a brief listen, and I thought the covers were too
speculative. In 88 the video of Can I Play With Madness was
everywhere. I thought it was good, but still I thought the
covers were too speculative, and all these carrot brains were
walking about in their Maiden T-shirts and Jackets, and
it pulled me off.
In 1990 I heard Holy Smoke, and it was cool. At this time the
carrot brains had left Maiden. Later that week I bought NPFTD,
and it was really amazing. Later I found out it was the worst
album.

When I was living in China, they had this small shop selling destroyed (ie
taken off the market) CD's that were all 'cut'... ie that had a notch cut
on the end of the CD. I picked up Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and LOVED
it. I tried to get as much Maiden stuff as I could from then on.
