Good musically, but the death metal vocals take some getting used to

: job)

I've got a 2-CD Metallica bootleg with a cover of Run to the Hills..
depending on your sense of humor it's either fucking hilarious or grounds
for a boycott. Either way, I've got it. :)

I didn't even know this was coming, I just happened across it and grabbed
it.
I will agree that the musical quality is good on each track, but with the
exception of the
Ides of March track and HBTN the vocals all SUCK!!!!!!
Maybe I've been spoiled by the good singing of Paul and Bruce, but these
people
sounded more like dogs in pain than a human being.
Also grabbed the new album today and am giving it a listen as I type.
Pretty good so
far. Blaze is definitely growing on me.
Later...

: I just picked up a Maiden tribute album this past weekend. The name is
: "A Call to Irons -- A Tribute to Iron Maiden"
I picked this one up last week. Unfortunately it is only a "tribute" in
that Maiden's songs were done by other bands. There was no
"tribute"-type literature in the packaging that usually accompanies
a release such as this, nothing stating how influential IM has been
to many genres of heavy metal, etc.
But apart from that, I was for the most part impressed with the CD. The
bands featured were all fairly unknown bands who tended not to play
in a similar style to Maiden. For me, that was a big plus. I got to
hear proof of how IM has reached out and given inspiration to such a
wide range of today's bands. I don't get a lot out of hearing bands
with sounds similar to Maiden playing Maiden tunes.
: The song list is as follows with a rating system. 1 through 10, where 1
: being worst and 10 being best on the excution on the cover by the band.
The previous poster's assesment of each track is very accurate. My
comments:
: 1. Ides of March/Purgatory by Steel Prophet (10)
Purgatory - one of my favorite IM songs and they do a great job. Good
vocals and the guitars are faithful to the original.
: 2. Powerslave by Ancient Wisdom (5)
More of a death metal band. Good to hear some chunkiness in the
riffs. THe vocals are quite harsh but they fit OK with the guitars.
The slower parts after the verses are synths which I didn't like
too much.
: 3. The Trooper by Vital Remains (5)
Death Metal, which by itself is fine, but the guitars are quite clean
a la IM and the guttural vox don't mix well at all. Technically
guitar-wise faithful to the original.
: 4. Genghis Khan by Angel Corpse (8)
A bit faster than the original, with some double-bass mixed in to replace
some of the original drum fills. I was hoping that the drumming on these
songs would forsake the more modern double-bass boringness, and for the
most part they do, but I couldn't help but notice it on this track.
Otherwise, not a flaw.
: 5. Hallowed Be Thy Name by Solitude Aeturnus (10) (Damn good
: job)
I think 10 is too low a score here. Solitude Aeturnus are one of 2 bands
on this tribute who I have heard before, so I actually had some
expectations for this rendition. Rob Lowe (vocals) is one of the few
metal vocalists who can give Dickinson a run for his money. Guitars a little
hidden behind the overall bass (not bass guitar) of the production. SA have
this ability to draw you into an epic song time and time again, and they
seem to make it theirs here.
: 6. Phantom of the Opera by New Eden (10)
I've never heard of New Eden before, and they do a really good job on
this tricky song. However, the double-bass drumming really gets old.
I'd give this a 7.
: 7. Remember Tomorrow by Opeth (9)
I have one Opeth CD and like it very much as a sort of epic black-metal
production with a very high amount of technical proficiency. However, for
this one they lose the traditional black metal shrieks and go for
a clean vocal approach. Drumming very well executed, overall I give this one
an 8 (I wouldn't have minded hearing a more Opeth sound on this one).
: 8. To Tame a Land by Morgion (3)
The intro here in my opinion outdoes the original in terms of performance,
but that's where the competition ends. The distortion on the guitars is up
to 13 and the vocals are quite death. Sounds sorta like older Entombed.
Anyway, it's not bad. The vocals match the guitars, and I'm confident I'm
hearing Morgion here and not some band trying to sound like Maiden. I give
it a 6.
: 9. Strange World by Evoken (7) (strange rendition---sounds sorta
: like Type O Negative)
Interesting....peaceful...yet strange and thought-provoking. Slower
rendition, but I like it.
: 10. Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Opera ix (2)
Absolutely terrible. The guitars can't even keep the spirit of the song,
and that's not the worst. There are 2 vocal styles at work: a predominant
black-metal one and this horribly off-key 15-year-old sounding female voice.
Very embarassing. The main guitar solo doesn't even follow the riff, and
beyond that is a terrible one by itself. Ugh.
: 11. Transylvania by Absu (8)
Excellent. Great guitar work, very fast, and the drumming is faithful to the
original (which I think makes the song that much more credible).
I *KNEW* it was a good move to order this CD, even though it will cost me a
bit.
I can't wait.

Last I checked, you could preorder it from Mass Music or CD Now, although by
the sound of it, a preorder should no longer apply since it seems to be out?

Yes, that was only released in Japan and is called "Made In Tribute",
although I read that it might have been (or going to be) released in europe
now.

!!!!!!UP THE IRONS!!!!!

Just buy "Through The Darkest Hour" if you like classic doomy kind of metal,
and "Downfall" if you aren't so much into classic doom stuff. Both are
great!!!
