The band Sepultura is coming to town in a few weeks. What is the
best Sepultura album to check out? For that matter, what's the
worst Sepultura album. Which albums should one check out, which
albums should one ignore?

The worst album is Roots. Completely ignore Against, it is terrible. In
my opinion their best album is Arise, but Chaos A.D. is also good. If
you don't have any of the albums, get something before 92.

Oh, man. You're going to get flamed like there's no tomorrow. I agree with
Chaos A.D. and Arise, and I would add Beneather the Remains.

Blood Rooted is an unfocused collection of B-sides, so that really doesn't
count as an actual album.

Morbid Visions is a good album, it's just that they didn't know exactly what
they were doing.

Best: Beneath The Remains, Schizophrenia, Arise.

Yeah, Justin is fuckin' right! "roots" is completely joke, "against" is
against all old sepultura fans - piece of shit, in other words. "arise" is
absolutely the best, "chaos ad" as well and I really like the whole
discography, apart from the last two albums...
but, if you listen to biohazard, I recommend you the last ones, 'coz they
suck just as biohazard does, hehe

In my own opinion, All of the Sepultura Albums have something to offer.
You wont sell yourself short by giving each one a chance.
I think Schizophrenia is a great heavy thrash death metal crossover.
Arise is a good solid thrash record.
Chaos AD takes that thrash and adds some kind of musicianship maturity
or whatever you want to call it.
Roots is a whole new level.
Blood Rooted is lots of demos and live and B sides and kind of a
"greatest hits" in an unofficial sense.
Against with new singer Derrick is their rebirth. Its hard for me to
listen
to personally since I love Max era so much.

Actually the only Sepultura I've really heard was the cut
they played on the Black Sabath tribute album "Nativity in
Black". Is that what they generally sound like?

Here is the bottom line with Sepultura....
if you are a thrash Deathmetal fan and into bands like old Slayer, Morbid
Angel, old Kreator, Deicide, etc....then wou will agree with my opinions about
Sepultura's albums

Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation 1986 - this was their first album, it's pure
raw old school death thrashmetal. get it or die it rules!!!

Schizophrenia 1987 - Sepultura's second brilliant technical thrash/death album.
A Masterpiece

Beneath the Remains 1989 - Sepultura's masterpiece!!! this album fucking rules

Arise 1991 - A descent album, in the vein of the previous two, but not as good

Chaos AD - I like maybe two songs on this album. A big disappointment. this
album illustrates Sepultura's new mosh groove direction.

roots - CRAP. this is rapcore biohazard sounding lame music

against - Dont even waste your time with this

Morbid visions

That's their Chaos-era sound. Chaos and Arise, to an extent, sound like that.

The top three, not in order

Beneath the Remains
Chaos A.D.
Arise

Not bad stuff...
Morbid Visions (recording quality sucks)
Against

Too self-indulgent for my tastes...
Roots

Best - Schizophrenia (starting from this one every new album is worse
than its predecessor)
Worst - Roots (however I have never bothered to listen to Against, do
not have an opinion on it)

i caught their show a few months back. they play 4 songs from
anything 1991 (Arise) and prior, after that it's the less thrash,
pseud-metalcore stuff populating Roots and Chaos A.D. (though i admit
i haven't heard either of those two). so if you got maybe one of the
older (Arise or Beneath the Remains) and one of the newer you'd have a
good idea what to expect.

My recommendation: "Against"

For what it's worth, I posted a request like this over a year ago and
ended up buying the Arise and Beneath the Remains remasters in addition to
Roots.
Arise is without a doubt the best one IMO. It's not as rough as
Beneath... and it's got more melody, better production, and the
arrangements are more mature. Roots is pretty good, just different.
