I make about 30K annually. Of course, none of that's from Rampage...
Seriously, it's hard to say exactly. I know in the US, artists typically get
dicked in their contracts, to where basically the band gets $1 for each CD
sold net (after paying the record company, publishing company, etc.). That's
for big pop names - metal bands don't have that kind of selling power, so
they get even less. Commercial radio play pays a bit, publishing ("selling
the songs for jingles...") can pay a BIG bunch...if your songs sell (I can't
see Holly Farms using "Fucked with a Knife" to sell turkeys...). Most metal
bands probably make their biggest chunk of change on merchandise - T-shirts
etc. Bands typically will handle that themselves (or the management will),
so after cost of having the shirts made, every shirt they sell is almost pure
profit - why do you think shirts are $20 to $24 for just the simple two-sided
short sleeve? That's how the bands eat, most often.
And again, that's only what I've learned from US labels... anyone know how
European labels run?

Big label acts make a maximum of $2 per CD. Most underground bands
tend to make almost nothing, from what I understand. My guess is that
bands like Marduk/Dimmu Borgir, etc. might make around a buck for each
CD.
Underground and unsigned bands get ass-horizontology from every which way.
Basically, an unsigned band puts money into the band to keep it going
(merch, recording, transportation to shows - rusting cars, etc.) and any
money made gets funneled back into the band ($5 show profits etc.)
Nobody ever said it was a lucritive business.
I've read that Chris Barnes said that he didn't have to work for 6 years
ever since he started Cannibal.
John from Obituary said the same thing.
I heard that Marduk's 'Heaven Shall Burn...' (great fucking album!) sold
some ludicrous amount like 30,000 in an impressive amount of time (can't
remember the exact span of time) and I doubt they can afford to kick back
and relax.
Morbid Angel (as you can imagine) are probably better situated as they've
had 10 years to get established with a continual battery of good successive
releases.
I remember reading in Extremities that the member of At The Gates all live
on welfare. I would assume this is the product of such a rigorous touring
schedule (not being able to hold down a job for more than 6 months without
relocating).
It's a lifestyle (Metal!) and if you love the music enough, this is the
sacrifice you've gotta make. I don't know of any executives kickin' out the
blasphemic grind overseas for 6 months a year, y'know?
