I know this geezer has stopped reading the newsgroup now, but I wish to
make a comment on this last paragraph nonetheless.
Death metal will never die for the die hard. Even if every band starts
churning out shite albums (actually, they are) the old classics will still
exist. For instance, Paradise Lost's latest album is quite poor (I didn't
mind it at first, but it hasn't stood the test of time) but 'Gothic' is still
a classic, monumental album to many people.

Pretty sad little post you made there....although i don't agree with it at
all....people have been trying to declare that metal was dead over and
over again....and it always resurges....because every year you have a new
generation of white kids (i know i'm stereotyping but just as a whole) who
are pissed off and look to the music to vent their frustrations....Many in
the metal underground wouldn't even acknowledge that Testament had brought
out a new album or even care if they did....Lately there has been a rapid
groth in the black metal vein as well as the doom metal vein....Two
totally different types of metal which are becoming bigger as more bands
start to play in the vein of metal....If the most "underground" bands you
know of are Fear Factory and Morbid Angel then you're missing a whole new
world of metal....Mtv here in the states got rid of headbanger's ball and
i didn't care even though many complained....the "metal" they were playing
were nirvana, soundgarden and maybe sepultura if you were lucky....they
did more damage than good....metal will never get big like rap or
alternative because it's too abrasive....please know what you're talking
about before you go showing your ignorance.

Thanks for everyone's reply to my Death of Death Metal posting. I just
wanted to add this follow up as my final post to the newsgroup.
I think Death set the standard for a Death Metal band. Chuck Schuldiner
was influenced by the most extreme thrash bands of the 80's (Slayer,
Kreator, Possessed, Sodom, Celtic Frost...).
I also think Metallica set the standard for a Thrash Metal band. They
were influenced by the heaviest Classic Metal and NWBHM bands before them
(Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Madien, Venom...).
And I think Thrash Metal had its formative years from 1983 to 1991.
Eventhough Thrash and Death Metal, in my mind, has offered its best albums
and tours, I think there is still some music worth checking out for the
die-hard fans.
For instance, although in 1994 I thought Thrash Metal was dead, I enjoyed
Slayer's "Divine Intervention" and Testament's "Low". Likewise, the two
Death Metal Albums from 1995 I enjoyed were Death's "Symbolic" and Fear
Factory's "Demanufacture".
So if you're a complete Deathhead (not to be confused with Deadhead),
don't give up yet. This Morbid Angel Tour is worth checking out and I
might go to the show in S.F. myself (...please, don't kick my ass if you
see me there...).
