Does anyone still use this newsgroup for actual death metal related discussions?

Not since I've subscribed to it (some time last year). AFAIK, it's one
of Brett Steven's abandoned creations. But I'd happily start to use
it. Discussing anything with myself is quite pointless, though.

I use to post in here 20 years ago but it seems it's nothing but spam now.

Twenty years ago I was using the Internet to play dinosaur games haha. I love this place, posts as old as 1993, holy shit. It used to be a LOT easier to navigate though. This is the remains of usenet ,once a bustling collection of forums from the early 1990's, bought out by Google of course. It became outmoded with the onset of the 2000's. If I am recalling correctly that is, its simply what I have read.

Google bought the Dejanews USENET archive. USENET itself is comprised of
a globally distributed set of servers exchanging articles with each
other. It became seriously clogged around the mid-1990s (AFAIK) which
caused people to flee to mailing lists and moderated groups. As "morons
talking to each other" wasn't particularly attractive, these moved on,
too. There's also no way to get paid for posting here and no way to edit
one's texts after the fact to erase less-than-sensible statements
(something shitty "superstar programmers" are extremely fond off).

All of this combined means it's again quite usable nowadays.

Not that this would anyhow belong here.
