What is this?
- This is an attempt to list the Metal World's treasure of Black Metal albums,
and all demos and other stuff released by the bands that have gotten as far as
a vinyl or CD release. The discography is maintained by Thomas Wolmer
<d90...@nada.kth.se>, who in the rest of this document refers to himself as
The Keeper. The document is copyright 1994, 1993, 1992 by Thomas Wolmer (big
deal since the information in it is free).

What is Black Metal?
- /* not implemented */

What lists of this kind are there out there, and where can they be found?
- Several. First there are the Doom, Black & Deathgrind Metal Lists, all in
the hands of The Keeper. Then there is a Progressive Metal counterpart, kept
by Erik Welty <e...@ice.sps.mot.com>. The most recent addition is The New Wave
Of British Heavy Metal List in the hands of Philip Wang <pw...@columbia.edu>.
An old an now outdated beast is The Metal List From Hell, once kept by Travis
Johnson <tra...@beau.adp.wisc.edu>. It covered Speed/Thrash/Death Metal, and
the Deathgrind list was originally created from the appropriate parts of this
list. Copies may still be floating around. More is coming too; "Sven Prozak"
<cbl...@pomona.claremont.edu> has indicated that he intends to create a Speed
Metal List from the remains of The Metal List From Hell.
All lists maintained by The Keeper are posted in the appropriate Usenet
newsgroups when they are updated, and they are also mailed directly to those
who wish to be sure that they don't miss anything (mail The Keeper to
subscribe to this service). The last posted versions can always be found,
along with in-between working versions, in
</afs/nada.kth.se/home/d90/d90-two/public/music> (but if you don't know what
AFS is you probably can't access these). On the World Wide Web, the last
versions can be accessed from <http://www.nada.kth.se/~d90-two/music/>, always
in ASCII versions and if we are lucky also in nifty HTML versions. We are
usually at least partly lucky as Miika "Mega" Kuusinen <me...@lut.fi> does this
work on the Black & Doom Metal Lists. The Keeper also tries to have links to
all other lists in there. As a last resort, the lists can of course always be
had straight from The Keeper in you ask him; in email or on the IRC where he
(way too) often dwells.

How am I supposed to interpret the unintelligible mess that makes up the list?
- The entries in the list look like this:
Artist: Country XXXX-YYYY (comments on state of existence)
# General comments on the band
Name Of Release/format/release year [Record Label(s)] (comments on contents)
# Comments on this particular release
...

XXXX-YYYY is the time span of existence (years). If the band is currently
alive, there is of course no YYYY, and if one or both of the dates are unknown
they are left out. If the band has existed in several periods there are
several intervals.
If the format field is missing then the item is an ordinary full-length
LP/CD/MC release; a non-full-length release is usually called an EP or
possibly a CDS or 12" if that is the only available format. Inconsistencies
would not surprise The Keeper.
To save space, the record label names have been abbreviated; a key is
available at the end of the list.

At last, is there any legal junk to remember?
- Not really. This document is freeware, you are allowed and encouraged to
copy, spread and make it publicly available, provided that you do not charge
any money for it. Use the information in it in any way you can think of, but
when you quote straight from the list, The Keeper would appreciate if you
mention your source.
What is not allowed is spreading versions of the document with any of the
text changed. If you want any changes made, tell The Keeper, OK? And BTW, even
though The Keeper spreads versions of the lists without this header section,
don't give such a headless list to anyone who haven't got a headed one.

Great list, finely organized with intelligent comments... except the
"Nazi warning". Being an unethical or simple offensive comment at its
best it raises a question: what gives you the right to brand a band as
being fascist. It's written easily, almost as a matter of fact. I would
hesitate to call anybody a nazi considering heaviness of that accusation.

Calling Burzum or Darkthrone nazi bands is not like saying something
like "their music sucks" it's quite different. I personally blame the
media for making monsters out of musicians. In my own opinion black metal
IS about music, not nazism.

The bands who have deserved that label are those who have said themselves
that they are nazis (or alternatively fascist + racist + thinking that
Hitler was a great man; that's close enough) at one point or another.
There is not a judgment on my side of any significance. The bands who
receive this label are not likely to be offended by it.
Then, recently Fenriz has said that he *isn't* a nazi after all ("jewish"
just happens to mean "bad" in Norwegian and "arisk" just happens to mean
"good" I guess, and Hitler was a nice man who built all those motorways...)
and if it seems likely that he just said he was to seems more "true" and
sell more albums (failed, as he lost the distribution instead...), then I
might remove the label from Darkthrone.

Neither do I think that Black Metal has anything to do with Nazism (although
Black Metal is more than music to me). But I do have something againts
nazis (or more specific, racists - fascism is another story), and in case
there are more people who won't buy albums by albums by nazi band for
ideological reasons, I put the warning sign there. Just as I warn people
of the Christian Death Metal bands in the Deathgrind lists.
And BTW, about Burzum, mr Vikernes have carefully used the media for
making a monster out of himself.

(Pure discussions about my personal opinions or about how nazism compare to
christianity are not relevant here while discussions about which bands are
really nazis and why Nazi Black Metal or Christian Death Metal are bad things,
however, are; although the latter topic may cause mass nausea.)

The bands you've labeled as nazi are neither nazi nor racist. There is
an element of nationalism in their music (which by definion is "devotion
to the interests of a particular nation"). There is nothing wrong with
nationalism and an inch of national pride, don't you think? It's rather
sad what happens if a nation stops caring for its identity and traditions.

I am surprised Fenriz even cared to say he is not a nazi so obvious it
is. I guess the media and people like yourself got on his nerves.
Darkthrone are one of the most financially secure black metal bands. They
simply couldn't care less if some scummy, doomish label like Peaceville
would turn them down (the shock!). If Fenriz and Co. could raise enough
money to build their own recording studio I don't think they'll have any
problems with Peacevill boycotting them. Give me a break, Peaceville
needs Darkthrone, not vice versa.

Ideology (be it nazism, racism, whatever) has nothing to do with music. If
you want to show how much you know about their ideology do it elsewhere.
Jews listen to Wagner because he was a great composer. Not listening to a
black metal band because of their beliefs is like not listening to
Entombed because they have a black person in their line-up. Let the
listener decide whether or not they like it.

In my opinion it's about music too, but Burzum for one has stated in
interviews that he supports nazis and that he through his music tries to
create the same evilness (or something in that line)

Burzum (= Count Grishnakh) not a racist?

[From an interview by Gerry Sparaco, not sure if it was ever published,
Grishnakh talking about when he negotiated with Earache]
I wasn't too interested and Earache probably had problems
with the fact that I am a Nazi! It sems like the big zines around don't
tolerate that I have other ideas then they have themselves. THEY claim to
fight intolerance and at the same time don't tolerate Nazi bands
[And about Sataism and Nazism]
I laugh when I get letter from "Satanists" hating me for being a Nazi as
Nazism is "a bad thing"! Hey? Is Satanism a "good thing" then??????
Yes my fascism is related to oppressive dictatorships! I really don't wanna
call myself a Satanist as there are too many different views on what Satanism
is about. I believe these two current Stars in control wil fallllllll!
Fade away as the elder Gods did. I seek tommorrow, not today or yesterday!
I am a racist too of course, the Arian race, HEIL HITLER!
Open your fucking eyes, SAve the white race! In the states you have
fucking more Niggers than whites and the percentage of niggers increases
by the fucking minute! In some years you won't find one fucking blong little
girl over there, only this worthless half-breed! They are all Apes and it's
about time we treat them like apes too! My eternal support to Paul Barnley!
HEIL HIM! Kill the niggers!
[end quote]

In every interview when the topic surfaces, he claims to be a racist. And
a fascist. From an old Kerrang! interview: "I support all dictatorships.
Stalin, Hitler, Ceaucescu... and I will become the dictator of Scandinavia
myself."
In an interview in the Swedish Close-Up zine he further explains that his
futere plan is a white aryan Scandinavia..

Those were the elements of nationalism I could dig up in a haste (= I had
online). There is more, if you give me some time.

And in case anyone cares, I label myself anti-nationalist. All nations and
cultures (I know of) that have existed sucks/sucked, as a whole; I see
nothing to be proud of there.
And to go even further, pride is stupid too, at least when taken for anything
that you haven't achieved yourself.

> I am surprised Fenriz even cared to say he is not a nazi so obvious it
>is. I guess the media and people like yourself got on his nerves.

If it gets on his nerves, he shouldn't claim to play Norwegian Aryan Black
Metal (as I think you know, the aryans really were a indo-european people
in Persia and India or so; only in the case of Nazism has it been used
for germanic peoples) and rant about jewish scum (which he later explained
was because the Norwegian word for jew was also slang for idiot and he made
the mistake of using it in English too). I'm sorry that I don't have any
quotes here, and I am not sure how many I have available - people who
are better off, feel free to help me!
Oh, BTW: "There should be no room for individual thought in the world"

Personally, I think that Fenriz is a major wimp and I don't find it unlikely
that he makes "evil" statements just to look evil himself, even though
he doesn't share the views. But if he wants the world to believe that he
does, I'll let them know. Now; he recently said that he certainly isn't
a nazi (what is the source? I'd like to see what he's said) and that may
be a reason to remove the Nazi label in the list; I didn't think about the
fact that I had it there.

Yeah, at keast the first two-three Darkthrone albums sold well. Peaceville
appears to have felt not quite at ease with Darkthrone though, both because
of the church arsoning propaganda and then anti-jewish stuff. *They*
appear to view, or at least to have viewed, Darkthrone as nazist but they
are also against censorship they say so they let them release all the albums
they signed for.

I have never said that I don't listen to bands because of what the
musicians say, or are. But I won't support them finacially by bying
their albums (new; I have sinned (hah :-) and got some stuff used).
And I didn't, in the Black Metal list, tell anyone not to listen to
something. I said that some bands were nazis. And that potentially
will make some people check out those bands, which they wouldn't have made
if no-one had told them about it. That isn't the intent of those comments
but the point is that I'm not telling anyone what they should do or believe.
If I thought that I could to that I might give it a try though.

There is no direct interaction between me and him but yes, I'm acting as a
channel for it. I think I can afford that. I'd rather see him dead -
probably not for the same reasons as why some others do though - but there's
not much I can do about that right now.

Would you give the date when this interview was given? It's not very
fresh, is it? It's almost funny to read this and know that public got
scared and upset at Varg. I mean really, did YOU take those words
seriously? Varg has long since abandoned whatever nazism and satanism he
was involved with. It's very regretful that so many narrow minded people
still consider paganism to be satanism.

Oh, and while I'm on the Earache topic lets get something straight.
Earache (Digby Pearson) was interested in Burzum so much that he (Dig)
visited count in Norway and chattered with him. Count wasn't too excited
about the whole thing and turned Earache down.

>In every interview when the topic surfaces, he claims to be a racist. And

Oh please! Old Kerrang? Is that where Euronymous called all black metal
bands "devil worshippers"? Kerrang wants the dirt, Kerrangs prints the
dirt. Varg resents assholes who buy every printed word. I know better
than read the yellow press.

I see christianity has done a fine job on you. The nation who lets her
traditions die has no future. "All nations and cultures that have existed
suck"? Are you saying your nation and culture sucks? Are you going to do
anything to make it better? A nation dies when it loses her bonds with
ancestors and culture.

How easily you fall for quotes. Fenriz and Greven don't care how you
feel. They are great musicians and that's enough for me to respect them.
People who get offended at their obviously provocative interviews are
pathetic bourgeoisie victims.

From what you write I personally think that you're a major wimp too.
But that's irrelevant isn't it? Who cares? But it's different when you
slander someone a lot of people care for.

Just in case you haven't seen the US release of "Soulside..." it WAS
censored with a permanent sticker. Apparently, Peaceville, who were
misguided enough to believe Darkthrone were nazis, considered a couple of
"fuck"'s to be much more offensive than fascism. So much for political

Haha, so now you're a saint? The fact that you labeled band as nazi

Black Metal bands. You're all messed up in your head, dude. You can't be
against nazism and promote nazi bands.

You're no better than Vikernes if you want to see him dead. You want
him to be dead as much as he wanted to kill Euronymous. "...there's not

Btw, I'd like to see the black metal list in its "uncensored" version.

In my opinion, any band that calls themselves nazi/fascist/christian/...
deserves to be labeled. They have already labeled themselves, and have
no right to start whining just because it didn't turn out to be such a
publicity stunt as they thought.

If you don't want to be called a nazi, don't call yourself a nazi.

The fact that Thomas Wolmer removes the warning if they say that
they arent nazis anymore makes it even less objectionable.

Okay, let me take another shot of Jack to calm my nerves down and
repeat what I said. The facts: Fenriz (from Mr. Wolmer's own words) said
that he is NOT a nazi, that the whole "jew" thing was a liguistic mistake.
Varg is his interview (which was posted here a couple months ago and
which I have in my home directory) said he is NOT a nazi.

Now, you have two choices: to remove the nazi warning from the list or
seek refuge in a subjective assumption that both had lied. It's your
choice really, to say "okay, they say they are not nazis, I'll take their
words for it" or "no! I don't care what those nazi bastards say! I'm a
stubborn, hard-headed imbecile who shall obstinate his prejudices."

This isn't the first time he says this. He has said equal stuff in private
correspondence with people I know. This means that he either 1) Really
means, or meant it, or 2) Wants to make a monster out of himself.
He also made interviews in Norwegian press at the same time, using more
polished language but saying about the same, at least concerning Norway.

His mother has said that he really is a nice guy, and that she can't
understand why he (note; she didn't say Thomas Wolmer) makes a monster
out of himself.

So, is he serious or does he just want us to believe that he is so evil?
Does it matter, for the purpose of the Black Metal List?

> Varg has long since abandoned whatever nazism and satanism he
>was involved with.

I suppose you are referring to the Sounds Of Death interview? I do not
believe that he was ever very seriously into Satanism (what would be wrong
with that anyway?), and what he said in the interview is close enough to
Nazism'for me. OK, there fell my statement about not making judgments. Here
are some relevant quotes from the interview (C) Sounds of Death Magazine 1994:

:Taoiseach: As for Cymophane, all are not Nordic, yet common goals and
:similar views draws the affiliates together. What do you see as
:Cymophane's goals?
:Varg: We all have different goals I guess, but the revival of pride and
:honor must be something ranking high on all lists. Aye, not all are Nordic
:but the vast majority are Germanic. Some Celt blood and roman, but our
:FILOSOFEM is strictly Norse-Germanic. The Celts and romans are just
:allies, not one of us, just like I am not one of them because I am
:Norse-Germanic and not Celt nor roman. This is racial paganism. The
:blood-axis.
: So one goal is to segregate all the peoples. The Celts shall worship
:their gods, the Negroes shall worship their gods, the romans shall worship
:their gods and so on with all races and peoples.

His "racial paganism" and "racial survivalism" *is* racism.
Then, about him not being a Nazi:

: The average person is degenerated by the same Judeo-Christianity leaving
:him incapable of reasoning on a higher level at all. If anybody talks bad
:about the Jews, our world's prejudiced sub-humanity automatically stamp
:him as the "Nazi-scum" or a "prejudiced-fuck" and a "racist." The average
:person does not even realize what the Jews are up to. Simply read the
:bible (2 Mos 19:5, 5 Mos 6:10-19; 1-3, 16-24; 20:10-17) and see for
::yourselves. What is more racial than to claim to be "Gods chosen people"?
:So who is the real racists?

In fact, he's right here, Judaism is a racist religion.

:Taoiseach: The accusations of your National Socialist beliefs are
:abundant. What's the truth behind this, Varg?
:Varg: Prejudice. The Jews made the world believe in the holocaust-lie, and
:whenever a blond, tall, proud norseman with sky -blue eyes, like myself,
:says anything negative about the pestilence called Judeo-Christianity and
:its roots, the Jews, he gets automatically stamped as a "nazi." I am not
:necessarily a National Socialist just because I have realized the
:holocaust story is but a big lie and because I acknowledge the fact that
:the Jews are the root of the Judeo-Christian thornbush. Attack the bush
:and you get hurt, attack the roots and the bush dies. This is not racism,
:it is racial - survivalism. Survival of the unique pure races.
: So the reason I am scorned as a "nazi" is the many lies of the Jews and
:the worlds prejudices as a result of their lies. ERWACHE!!!

Oh well.

He has now become "intellectual", he says Aye instead of Yes, he makes
frequent use of words like esoteric and exoteric, and he has dropped
"nigger" and "slave people" from his vocabualry. Apart from that I can't
see much difference.

> It's very regretful that so many narrow minded people
>still consider paganism to be satanism.

It is. But that's completely irrelevant here.

> Oh, and while I'm on the Earache topic lets get something straight.
>Earache (Digby Pearson) was interested in Burzum so much that he (Dig)
>visited count in Norway and chattered with him. Count wasn't too excited
>about the whole thing and turned Earache down.

He did seem interested at least. It looked like that in the same letters
to a friend of mine I referred to above. I'm afraid I can't quote them
though, in any of the cases, because she didn't let me read the whole
letters to begin with and I hardly have any contact with her any longer
anyway (the letters were mostly from summer 1993).

>> From an old Kerrang! interview: "I support all dictatorships.
>>Stalin, Hitler, Ceaucescu... and I will become the dictator of Scandinavia
>>myself."

> Oh please! Old Kerrang?

OK, OK, we're talking sensationalist media here, but does that mean he
didn't say the above? The controversity in statements like the above
has sold more than a few albums for the Norwegian Black Metal bands...

Idiots like Grishnack better NOT claim to be Satanists because they have
NO idea what Satansim is about. Yet they seem to. "I am your disciple
and therefore my own." to quote Darkthrone. Yes, my own. As a Satanist,
I could give two shits about Jews, niggers, spicks, wops, micks, krauts or
anybody. I do have certain racist views, but I'm not going to start an
anti-nigger crusade. One of my best friends happens to be Jewish. He and
his brother both listen to Darkthrone and love it; they could give two
shits if Fenriz wants to be a Nazi. In fact, my friend is 100%
Transilvanian, which so many Norweigans mention in their songs again and
again. Hypocrites! Evil is self, complete self, and everything that is
against good. Evil does not discriminate. I hate all human beings in
general. Grishnack is deluded; he is wasting his time with any cause. He
should just worry about himself. Also, he should have blown up that
church then killed Euronymous. Actually, he shouldn't have killed
Euronymous at all; he fucked up Mayehm and Burzum. I listen to both
Burzum and Darkthrone. Throne is my favorite band. I think their music
is beautiful and exalting. Who cares if they're idiots? Bach was a

The day drew long shadows over the splintery wood and the bowed, hot, muted
heads of the crowd. To the left, a final gasp. In the center all eyes were.
Hands strained against bloody holes of gouging, ragged nailing, and feet
twisting on their spindle. Breath came slowly. Then, faster, and soon faster.
In his mind the Nazarene could see her bent over his groin, working for his
pleasure, her face strained. "Oh..." he murmured. The crowd pushed forward.
"Oh!" he gasped, "Oh, God! Oh, Mary! Oh...", spraying his thick semen on the
faithful, and into the mud. -- sven przk/nazarapine, inc.

I am aware of this, as I even told Mr Gorelord. What I'm surprised of is that

None I know of. Maybe in some of the more "nationalist" environments...

Btw. Earlier this week one newspaper here in norway reported that
Grishnack no longer was a satanist. He was more into nationalism "instead".
He supposedly didn't care much for the black metal style either, and
has started his own company together with his mom.

This is tabloid press, and not an interview (He don't give any, they
said.) so you might not want to believe what you didn't know already.

He supposedly have his guitar with him at least, I don't know about
recording. I think the tracks to "Filosofem" was recorded before he
was put in jail so that one might still be black metal.(I don't have
the paper, so I'm not sure.) It is illegal to run a company from the
cell here in Norway, and that was the main point of the story. That
might apply to playing in a band too I guess.

Well, I think that a warning "Nazi" or "Fascist" is _slightly_ different

It's still stupid though. You can lable the skinhead bands like Screwdriver,
Nazi, but a band like Burzum, where because the lead singer said that in an
interview? ...to be a nazi band the lyrics would have to be nazi oriented. If
the lead singer of a band is jewish do you put 'hebrew warning'...I mean he
may be a follower of that religion or whatever, but if he doesn't use it in
the lyrics! There is a HUGE difference between nationalism and nazi... and
unfortunately people here in the US have no idea how important natinalism and
patriotism is for a small country like the ones in europe. I'm SICK of people
jumping on a guy for mentioning something like that, and they lable him a
nazi. Of course what he said was deplorable, but hey we have people jumping on
fat people, on fags etc, nobody seems to get that worked up about it. Leave
the guy alone, if those are his views... he's not trying to impose them thru
the music. You should have put maybe
'Warning: don't buy this because your huge amount of $10 for the tape is gonna
go to a racist' oh no, not $10, he's gonna destroy the world, he's gonna buy a
nuclear missle. Dork, I am 100% against his views, but what your doing is

IA>chance of me buying it, but I wouldn't like to find out afterwards...

Agreed that hte Nazi thing isn't cool, but what if someone got labled a
Nazi when they wern't? (And I'm not saything that I'll so much as TOUCH
the music of ANY sort of racist that I find out about... aside from his
total lack of talent, that's why I'd like to get a vice grip with my
half inch long nails on Axl Rose's miniscule balls) I jsut remember
that one of my friends was in a band nad some drunk girl seduced him--
you men will know what it'd be like if some drunk chick who you'e always
admired (hehehe... really, really admired) advances on you, even drunk.
She was all over him, and he couldn't really help himself when shge
started.. errr... *CENCORED!* No one would see his band becuase tehy
all said he wa a rapist even though SHE seduced him, and eventually he
got kicked out of hte band. So I've learned to be careful about the
lables other people slap on people-- you know, see for yourself before
you judge.
