Ok who went to the rehearsals?

What was it like? What was the quality of the 'bots like then? Where is
the new venue? Any suprises when you got there..like plans to give a £1000
first prize!

Did anyone turn up with a couple of sheets of ally four wheels and two
motors and some box section saying "This is Devastator....or it will
be...soon.....yeah and it'll kick your robots butt....check it out...ring
binder and everything......this is where the plans go and stuff, I made the
label myself."

I expected a flurry of posts about the rehearsals, is there a big secret?

Before anybody asks..no I didn't make it this year, we're too far behind. I
did get the ring binder sorted months ago though.

Regards

Tim

We did, Ryan (my 6-year-old) and I went on Monday. Strictly speaking,
they were auditions, not rehearsals.

Great fun. The quality was very high. We saw Panic Attack - looking
meaner than ever. Apparently, Rex's Cassius was there on Saturday and
Roadblock on Sunday. Bodyhammer and Mortis were around on Monday, but
we didn't seem them.

> Where is the new venue?

The auditions were in West London. I think they are hoping to film the
series there too.

No such luck. No surprises, it was very well organised.

Yes. There were a couple of robots which were little more than wooden
mock-ups with cardboard weapons. Most robots that got as far as the
test arena were 80%-100% complete.

There were some 350 robots tested over the 3 days. Only about one
quarter will get used for the TV series and live events. I'd imagine
some people didn't want to spend a lot of time and money on something
that may not get through.

I think that many of the people who were mouthing off in here were
never serious about building a robot for the series. Perhaps the
derogatory comments about Mentorn put them off. I talked to both the
Producer and Associate Producer and they were very happy with the high
number and high quality of the robots entered. They are now going to
spend the next week or two deciding which robots they'll use.

Our robot "Rhynobot" performed well (IMO). It put the ball into the
net and pushed some concrete blocks around (which is all it was asked
to do). No-one was allowed to activate or show off weapons.

I've got my fingers firmly crossed.

if that is the case, there won't be any audience members coming
by car (unless they bus them in from elsewhere)

The Asylum studios venue is far too small for the
equipment/staging/seating/parking/catering they used
for last years filming.

Then again..... perhaps I saw only one tiny corner of a
massive underground complex.

on another note... it suprised me that people were still
bringing robots that were overweight. I talked to a team
who had a robot weighing 110 kilos.

Also, please try and remember that this is NOT alt.robotwarsuk, and
that there are some of us here not going for one of Mentorn's events,
but will instead be competing in some of the upcomming US events (I
hope to, Dan D, Dan Ushman et al).

In addition, can you remember that "who-har" about 13.12 - that put
quite a few people off competing..

At Asylum Studios in Perivale. Just behind the old Hoover Factory on
the Western Avenue.

So you're building again then, are you? Any details yet?

Clock's still ticking on http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/prickly/robots/rwnozza.htm for details of your last wonderful machine...

As a technical adviser for this Robot (twas at the auditions and should
pass easily)
I understand (I wasn't there) this robot was excellent - it can pull a car
!!

Now for the weapons - all planned round compressed air.

I believe a few of the robots there were as stated - very wooden and weak.

We're going to need shakeproof washers (nyloc) - we hadn't realised how
loose they become. I am hoping the robot's 'owner' will allow photos of it
so we may put some info on a web site - I've got 100 mB to play with.

It was in a big empty building called Asylum studios at Perivale.

We were in the last ten to be looked at out of this ten I would say
there was at least six not finished. Some were in a bad way.

Well, thats pretty much what you would expect on Monday. Those who
are way behind are going to tick the monday pm box because they can
then have saturday and sunday to finish the robots off.

Saturday had far fewer incomplete robots.

I wish I could be so confident. I got into series 2 heavyweight
reserves with a robot that was technically superior to many in
the main competition. this years robot is twice as good as that
one (well, its the same robot, but changed beyond recognition)
but I still can't sleep easily until I get confirmation either
way.

It doesn't take much to pull a car.

Don't you mean nyloc nuts?

Ooooh. I can't wait to see Ben Spiner and Gates McFadden present
the nozbot show.
