Has anyone else had problems ordering items or with joining the RW club. I
used the electronic ordering from the website and it's been a month now and
no show on any items.

Of course, the money was deducted from my credit card the same day as I
ordered.

Mailing Mentorn with their e-mail address just gets the Postmaster bouncing
back no such user.

a) robo...@mentorn.co.uk
b) Phone the shop on 0171-323-9435

Then again, having an email of bur...@your.house probably doesnt help
your case!

I placed an order last summer and have never received anything, but then
they never took any money. I had 4 goes at placing an order as I felt it
wasn't working correctly. You must remember that Mentorn's official RW web
site is probably the worst web site you'll come across in the professional
world. Why do you think this newsgroup exists, it's because no one wants to
be on line for an hour just to read and write on theirs.

You simply complain to your credit card company and they do the rest.

If this is a one-off problem (lost in post) you will get results quickly, if
it's a problem with Mentorn they will have their posteriors severely kicked
by the legal types: Failure to supply goods is an offence.

Having run this type of thing myself, mistakes do happen and aren't usually
malicious (particularly not in the case of a large company such as this)
however it is useful to have them leaned on if that's what it takes to get
them to get their act together.

Any particular reason why you think its the worst web site in the
professional world?

Did you place this order online or through the post? In between that
time the online shop has been rewritten. It was written originally
without support for netscape for some obscure reason...

As for no-one wanting to use their discussion board at
http://www.robotwars.co.uk/forum/ then I would have to disagree. There
has been like 9,000 posts there and is a sure way to put views and
opinions before the production staff. A lot of the builders also
frequent the board and discussion about the house robots have their own
section <g>

For me, the huge list of Java errors which pop up is a bit of a worry.

My opinion is based on the way it hard to navigate. The first time you use
the site you need to know what the button descriptions mean. Once you've
been in a few time I'm sure it becomes easy, but it's not for a first time
user. I think the message board is so out dated, newsgroups work so much
better. The threads disappear once read, there isn't a backlog of messages
to wade through each time and you only get the new messages. It's ok for
those people who access the site from work or uni, but those of use that
have to pay our own phone bill cannot be expected to sit on line for that
length of time reading the then writing messages, it is just too expensive.
You see, I'm writing this at 10 past 9, peak rate, but off line, so I can
take as long as I like to write it, it costs me nothing but time.
If the site was made up more like a club site than an advert by using easy
to find and select buttons it would be quicker to access what you want. The
text is too small, I now have a 17" monitor and run at 1076 X whatever, but
before with a 14" on 640X480 (or what ever it was) the screen was just too
compressed and hard to read, especially in black with some areas of dark
text.
That's about it, but as I haven't used the site for some months, entirely
for the reasons mentioned, so it may have changed and my opinions may now be
invalid.

Have to agree with most of that, especially the screen sizes, it was
originally designed for 800x600 I think. The official forum at
http://www.robotwars.co.uk/forum/ though is that, so it has it
advantages with its readership. Usenet may be quicker and easier for
some, but the staff do read the forum. Usenet clients are not all
everyones cup of tea, or coffee.
Mind you, you can set up an account in the forum to be mailed the new
messages which could cut down things a bit and I am thinking of putting
a digest up on http://www.damgerousmachines.com/ of all the forums that
are in existance and various news pages.

Well, something came this morning. I think it's what I wasted £12.95 on,
politely called club membership. Doesn't look like it's changed much in 4
years. The application form to build a robot looks very unprofessional and
appears to be a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy.......

I'm still missing the technical manual I ordered.

We're a bunch of R&D engineers seriously considering building a robot, but
I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it for the show.

Yes, many...

a) It is too graphical and takes about half an hour to load.

b) It's gimicky

c) It doesn't have any real info on it

d) Mentorn are a bunch of &^$^%&)+(*'s

Satisfied?

I can think of more...

If anyone wants to enter a robot, but after reading just how rubbish the
club is doesn't want to join, I can give you a club membership (unless
Mentorm say you can't).

The club membership is a joke. I haven't had an update since Seris 1 (apart
from a catalogue of Robot Wars merchandise, most of which was clothing with
'Robot Wars' written on it). It has total bollocks written in it, along the
lines of (I quote): "Thermonuclear starter motor", "Prototype cold fusion
engine", "Steam driven circular saw", "Matilda's circuitry appears to be
hormonally driven".

The video you get sent feels like an advert for the real thing (which you
can pay another $12.95 for) and I didn't even get the badge. Boy, was i
dissapointed
:->

Having a bit of a laugh about the robots is fine, but paying £12.95 for an 8
page pile of bollocks, a video, a badge and the bit you want, the
application form, is about £13.00 too much. Roughly.

Now that you mention it, the huge list that popped up goes back a long
way, and only the following was new.

2/7/2000 @ 19:42:15
Java Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException - ` ÿ

java.lang.NullPointerException

at com.apple.mrj.JManager.JMViewerEvent.post(JMApplet

And that hasn't beeen repeated when I popped back, so was probably a
local issue.

Sorry Adam.

No, their admin makes them loads of extra money.

I have to admit I was very disappointed with what I was sent (see earlier
post!)

I saw somewhere of an unofficial bout in a Walthemstow carpark and the
possibility of somewhere in Taunton starting an event quarterly. Anyone
know of any other details of places to battle your robot other than RW.

Looking at the archive pictures of the Auditions, there were lots of robots
there, so there must be several people up for a weekends rumble.

By sending people:

a) Nothing, so they can't compete

b) Twice as much, so they lose out on one person's tenner

Im glad someone else thought it was crap too, I wondered if
I was missing the point or something, very sad.

Well as they don't pay to compete, and in fact Mentorn have to wade
throught hundreds of no hope entries, this can only benefit them

>b) Twice as much, so they lose out on one person's tenner

Those who can't be bothered to complain get nothing for their money,
pure profit, those who do after several months usually get no more,
and often less than, they had paid, and the delay helps Mentorns cash
flow anyway.

We were in the second series with Limpet,
we pulled from the third series with only a week to go to filming,
and I`ve just received entry forms for the fourth.

and we`ve never been members of the `club`!
