换 Most of the "Sharks" spotted around here are just large Sun穎ish ,
which have prominent dorsal fins that they like to break the surface
of the water with, and so they kinda resemble sharks

The average Rhode Island native 棗 who's probably never even been to
Block Island ; and who doesn't know a 'Jib' from a 'Jibe' 棗 is
scared silly by these harmless fish

The 'Beach People' who know the Sea best [ the Surfers and Fishermen ]
are all incredulous that these 'Sightings' have caused so much Panic
here, because even the species of Sharks that ARE spotted in these waters
pose NO DANGER to Humans

Can any穙ne here recall even ONE Shark Attack on Humans
in these waters 棗 EVER ??

i rest my case ....

I've been swimming every day and I'm still here to tell the
story. But I must admit I had already suspected that we
had sharks in our ocean. I've been swimming at South
Kingstown beaches, although only because I like them
better.

A while ago I did get interested in a series of fatal
shark encounters in a creek in New Jersey. Supposedly
those 4 deaths over a 10 day period inspired Bentley to
write _Jaws_. I couldn't imagine what sharks were doing
10 miles from the ocean in a small-ish creek. Then I learned
about bull sharks, and how they are found 1500 miles up
the Mississippi River, as far north as Indiana, and how they
have very nasty dispositions. Fortunately such river sharks
are not found in most of the rivers of RI as we have dammed
them all up safe and sound. I'd say the Narrow River and the
beginnings of the Pawcatuck, and of course the Providence
River possibly could attract bull sharks, but the Wood,
Pawtuxet, Blackstone, etc should be shark-free.

Oh, and I'm sure your ocean over in East Bay doesn't have
sharks either.
:)
Laury

PS for anyone interested in learning about the NJ shark
attacks they happened in Matawan Creek in the early
part of the 20th century. I know there are a few sites online
that discuss them.

I've always been under the impression that Bull sharks were strictly
tropical and subtropical. I guess that's not entirely true if they've been
found as far north as Indiana. I've been a lurker in this group for quite a
while and as a former Rhody, I've been homesick for a very long time. I
couldn't resist jumping in on this because as a kid growing up in Newport, I
used to dive quite a bit. You'd be amazed at how many sharks there are in
the waters of RI. I've never been on a dive where I didn't see at least
half a dozen. Once, while on a dive off the cliffs in Brenton's cove, a
small Blue Shark swam right between my legs. I think I was 10 and it froze
me so badly that I peed right in my wet suit. My secondary fear was that it
would somehow be attracted by it. But it just kept swimming on. That was
just about the same time Jaws came to the theaters. Even though I'd already
seen it once, each time I saw it afterward brought a new sense of realism I
hadn't experienced the first time. I have it on DVD now and I can honestly
say that 30 years later I still feel 'the fear' when I watch it. It makes
me laugh at myself, but only after the movie is over and the shark is dead.
:) Another strange and interesting shark encounter was when I was fishing
for Mackerel from a pier off of Long Warf. I thought I hooked a Mackerel
but immediately I felt another hit that almost took the pole out of the
grasp of my young hands. It took nearly 20 minutes to get my fish in and I
can't tell you how surprised we all were to see that it was actually a young
Hammer Head. By the time I finally reeled it in, a crowd had gathered
around me and I couldn't have felt more proud if I had just won the RI Tuna
Tournament. Every now and then, I think back on that Hammer Head and feel
sad that I let it die. But it served a purpose, I suppose. Now that I live
my life among the inland mountains, I'm a big advocate of the catch and
release philosophy ensuring our kids will get to experience the thrill of
hooking a big one.

Sorry for the ramble but I did say I'm a bit home-sickly. While I have my
chance, I can name some things I'd love to experience before I'm put in an
old folks home. You guys don't know how good you've got it. :) Not in any
special order other than what comes to mind:

- Dell's Lemonade
- New York System hot wiener
- Casserta's Pizza
- Casserta's Spinach Pie
- Haven Brother's hot dog
- Little Neck clams on a half shell
- New England Steamed clams (long necks)
- George's of Galilee Clam Cakes
- Sailing to Block Island
- Sailing to Cuttyhunk
- A look at the Narragansett Brewery one last time
- Play golf at Triggs once more
- See a play at Trinity Reperatory
- Ms. Slinko, my 10th grade Algebra teacher at Toll Gate High >:o

I'm sure I could come up with much more, but this would be a good start.

Cheers to you all,
Russ....

I'm with you PZ. Funny that you mention the phantom Sunfish. I saw one
once on a dock in Cuttyhunk. A boat had just brought it in and tossed it
up. I thought I knew everything about the ocean at 12 years old, but I had
never before seen such a beast. That is one phugly phish IMO. I think I'd
be more afraid of an encounter with one of those than I would with an actual
shark. I do know a Jib from a Jibe but I'd still be scared silly by a fish
that that big. Even if it does have a mouth the size of a golf ball. :)

I must say that the sight of Narragansett Town Beach packed with people on
the sand and no-one in the water is pretty funny. It's also funny just how
many news crews/satellite can fit into one tiny strip of asphalt.

I was off having fun at Rome Point one day, and Ninigret Park the next, then
Cronin Fishing Area near Pt Judith the day after that. Too many places to
go to worry about just one little spot.

(on line for three days to tend to appointments)

Yes, they have:

<http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Sharks/Statistics/GAttack/mapusa.htm>

There is one reported attack in RI, but not a fatality. Massachusetts
has 5 attacks, with the last fatality in 1936. Also, one should note
that the states with the largest numbers of attacks, generally have the
largest coastlines, so one should not feel safer in 1 attack RI then
in, say, 5 attack Massachusetts. (Also, many of the New Jersey attacks
are probably from the 1916 flurry.)

The sharks have always been there. Indeed, the bay is RIFE with spiny
dogfish, sand sharks, and whatnot.

Spiny dogfish are bottom feeders, eating much of what you'd find on a
seafood platter (crabs, mollusks)

Sand tiger sharks (misleading name for a pretty skittish animal) eat other
fish (menhaden, herring, bluefish, stripers, squid (we call it calamari)).

When's the last time you heard of someone being bitten?

The whole thing is overblown, and personally, *I* would have ignored the
"the beach is closed to swimming" bit.

These creatures are even in the East Bay.

Narragansett Beach is NOT the Great Barrier Reef.

Without a doubt, Wein O Rama has my vote for the best NYS weiners, followed by Nicks in Cowesset. The rest seem to lag significantly. Problem is, they are not open at night, but Nicks is.

Hey Day,

Thanks for the update. I appreciate it very much. I had my moment of
silence for the brewery. It's too bad. I've got a bunch of 'Gansett
breweriana in my garage and in boxes. I'm glad I held on to it all then.
Out, it will all have to come later today I guess. So what happened to
Casserta's? Is Ronzio's in the same Federal Hill spot? Is Raymond's place
still standing (with the pinball machines painted on the front)? I also
remember a little cafe just across the street from his place (a bit toward
downtown, but Ray's was still visible). I used to love having lunch there.
I can't remember the name of it though.

My memories are with the Olneyville NY System. I played my Senior League
baseball for them at the Uni. I lived on Lowell avenue in Silver Lake when
I was 12 & 13 and a bunch of us would make the hike in an instant. They
weren't called 'gaggas' back then. :) Then we'd head over to a big
discount store nearby in a big old brick mill and play pinball for hours.
It was called the Giant or something and was on the second floor. We had to
walk up the stairs to get up to the 2nd floor, IIRC.

Does Haven Bros. still park in front of the City Hall? I wasted too much
time watching "Providence" for some visual cues of the current look of the
city without any success. Too hokey a show for any of that, I guess.

I'm glad to hear you know how good you've got it. When I got out of the
army and started college, I rented a house in Bonnet Shores. Each night,
I'd walk down to the beach and dig up a bushel of clams (all kinds). It
would take me all of 10 minutes and the daily feast was on. God got even
with me though because I haven't seen a Quahog or a long neck steamer since
I left almost 20 years ago to the day. In fact, since I left, I've never
met a single person who has ever even heard of a Quahog or an eastern
steamer (if that's what they're called). Here, a steamer is a mussel. In
all the time I was growing up, no one even thought about eating a mussel and
here they are a supposed delicacy now. When I tell my friends about the
joys of eating "piss-clams", they just think I'm nuts. They'd rather eat
"Rocky Mountain Oysters". (And they're not clams, I can tell you that).

Cheers!

I believe that the "diner" still pulls in somewhere. Much of Providence
is nothing like in the old days but most actually is an improvement
except for the new uppity mall that now blocks the statehouse view from
95. Yuck!

Well, it all depends on the pizza joint itself. The only Caserta's that
I've ever eaten was the one near Scarborough. "Chain" Ronzio/Caserta
quality can change from location to location, and who's cooking the
pizzas. Chain in quotes because neither of them exhibit the "good thing"
about chains, that quality is consistent from restaurant to restaurant, be
it good or bad. IMO, I think that the lack of *complete control/bland
chain mentality* is a good thing in this case.

From what I've heard from various people, Ronzio's was the result of a
family argument and lawsuits.

If anyone has more details than what I've heard, feel free to post them
and correct me.

That's not Caserta's! That's umm Casserta or something, a
blantant attempt to rip-off the real Caserta name. The only
real Caserta I think is on Federal Hill, not on Atwells, on a
street that runs parallel to it. They did open a branch in Cranston,
but it closed a while back.

Not to get too far from the stated topic, did anyone catch
Close to Home in today's paper?

I'm guessing that's South County's ER

Spruce Street, I think. They also had a store on rt 44 in the
