I've been doing this "net thing" for the past, uh... (dan looks at calendar
and _tries_ to remember when he "appropriated" that URI internet account)
going on 7 years, just before The Never Ending September. Before that, it
was local networks (Anyone remember OmniNet and LOCNet?) and BBSes. Anyone
remember IDS when it was on the *cough* Microvax?
I've also met a *lot* of people from all walks of life because of it. I
also have an internet/IRL thing going with someone near Toronto (IRL since
Valentine's Day 1998). It's not *that* far.
My overall impression of Net People is that the weirdos are few and far
between and the news media not only makes mountains out of molehills, but
engages in Yellow Journalism against a medium that competes directly with
radio, tv, and newspapers.
Posting an ad *here* is no different than posting a personal ad in the
ProJo.
Mind you, I also personally know of some marriages of people who met
online...

since this is alt.rhode-island, the laws of rhode island are
relevant to this discussion. and by the laws of rhode island, the
age of consent for sex is 16, and i've heard (though i am less
certain of this one) that it's 14 if parental consent is given.

My original messages started as a humorous response...but since you all are
going to be so serious...I have a son and a daughter in their teens. If
either one of them had a much older guy or gal knocking on the door for them
I wouldn't think that it was OK just because the age of consent is 16.
Sexual or not, there's got to be something wrong with a 25 or 30 year old if
they need to hang out with teenagers. (And please don't write back *who
said the guys that respond are going to be 25-30 year olds*)

Definitely an interesting way of putting it. Has a ring of
plausibility that chills me. It's right along the same lines as
listening to all of the misconceptions I typically have to listen to
about gays.

work 2 jobs, make pretty decent money, am a part time student, own 3 cars..

I met a great guy on the web. The web is life with more anonymity and a lot
of other unknowns, s'all. My long distance SO is smart, funny, stable,
employed at the same place for 19 yrs, and a wonderful father. I never met
anyone like him at a bar or through friends. I've never met anyone quite
like him, period. (And yes, he really is a guy.) We became friends first
through a BBS, a pretty friendly and helpful to newbies group. I wasn't
looking for anyone for a relationship; it just developed over a couple of
years. Personally, I feel that the web is a safer, healthier, and less
expensive way of meeting people than going out partying. JMHO. All my
netfriends through my old ISP are blessings. I consider myself quite lucky.
The net allowed me to meet new people all over the country and learn a
little along the way. Besides forging friendships that were based on
successful communication and mutual interests rather than on looks or social
groups or convenience, I managed to broaden my horizons and enrich my life
without leaving my child home unattended or with sitters.
But you sure wouldn't catch me posting my personal info all over the net
looking for a date. Just too risky for me.

got popped. Every once in a while I get the urge to throw The Lair up on a
spare computer, but I am afraid to see what kind of users I would end up
with. I like remembering the old days with fondness. Good to hear from
