positions. There's a lot in Bible narratives which can't be
backed up by any other source. Until relatively recently,
there was no extrabiblical evidence of the existence of
King David (one inscription which seems to refer to the
House of David was found a few years ago).
I believe that most people who believe that there was an
event corresponding to the Biblical Exodus (and there are
all sorts of positions on this, of course) believe that
this happened under the reign of Rameses II.
On the Exodus, one interesting take is given by Sigmund
Freud in "Moses and Monotheism". He defended the ideas (not
original to him) that 1) Moses was no Hebrew but an
Egyptian priest, and 2) there was a second Moses, a
Midianite, who did most of the traipsing through the
desert, after the Hebrews killed the priest! The first idea
is accepted by many scholars, though I don't think the
second is considered seriously these days.
In any case, I would strongly recommend not a book, but a
couple of magazines, both edited by Herschel Shanks: BIBLE
REVIEW and BIBLICAL ARCHEOLOGY REVIEW. Shanks is not
dogmatic and lets many viewpoints into his magazines.

of this region. As such, the study of the Bible's as history has real
value.
