Robert Crumb's 'When the Niggers Take Over America!' originally appeared in
Weirdo #28, 1993. Taken from America, published by Knockabout Comics,
London, 1994
I surely hope you know who Robert Crumb is, and what he means to the
alternative comic world. His work was never politically sensitive
(i.e, misogyny in early works) and deliberately evokes egregious
stereotypes to provoke thought. In the case of his one on a reversal
of race in American society, he's riffing off the white male's psyche
and subconscious racial fears, juxtaposing it against a backdrop of
historical imagery. It was a fairly prescient issue at the time,
published under the backdrop of the Rodney King fiasco, which revealed
how insecure white people felt in their (unjust) racial supremacy.
Note how the epithets are all in scare quotes. White Supremacist comic
writers sure as hell don't feel the need to distance themselves from
racist language.. Whether his comic succeeded in subverting racial
views, or merely perpetuated negative stereotypes is another question,
but as it stands, yes, the work is satire of the highest order and
only reprinted (without his permission) in racist circles because
they're too myopic to see the joke's on THEM, not Blacks and Jewish
people. Perhaps you should take another look at the images.
"Crumb's racial imagery, often harking back to the extreme racial
caricatures of the early 20th century, has also caused much
controversy. Crumb typically defends this work by saying he is
expressing the racism endemic to American culture, and that he does
not endorse racism himself. In the '90s many racist groups reprinted
his satirical story "When the Niggers Take Over America"Comic Link
(Weirdo #28, 1993) and "When the Goddamn Jews Take Over" Comic Link
(Weirdo #28, 1993), much to Crumb's horror." -Wikipedia
