As the nation struggles to contain the fast-spreading coronavirus
pandemic, one of the country’s largest minorities is simultaneously
battling another dangerous enemy: racism.
Over the past week, Asian-Americans across the U.S. have reported nearly
700 incidents of discrimination by coronavirus-inspired bigots who have
attacked them online, spat on them, screamed at them in the streets and
on public buses and even physically assaulted them.
These are the first figures released by a new online reporting forum
created this month by the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, or
A3PCON, and Chinese for Affirmative Action.
One of the victims whose stories were shared this week described a
disgusting incident in which a man yelled, “f---ing Chinese disease” and
“spat at me hitting my coat, scarf and face.”
In another incident, a man threw his drink in a victim’s face and
shouted, “they should be banned” and “they're all disgusting,” according
to the complainant.
Several victims also reported Uber and Lyft drivers who refused to pick
them up and cashiers who told them to leave their stores.
The attacks are part of a wave of racial discrimination that has
escalated since COVID-19 was first identified in the Chinese city of
Wuhan about three months ago. Many in the public and even elected
officials, including President Trump, have insisted on calling the
illness the “Chinese virus” or “Kung Flu,” a rhetoric that experts say
has incited hate against Asians all over the world.
Among the 673 reports filed on the STOP AAPI HATE forum over the past
week, verbal harassment and name-calling were the most common types of
discrimination. Asian-Americans of different backgrounds were targeted
and 61% of them weren’t even from China.
A3PCON Executive Director Manjusha Kulkarni said the numbers don’t even
begin to describe the “hate and vitriol” Asian-Americans and Pacific
Islanders are experiencing during the current health crisis.

“And they don’t make evident the fear and anxiety that community members

The Trump administration has repeatedly used ethnic terms to refer to
the disease, claiming it’s not racist.
“It comes from China,” the president said in a recent news conference.
"That’s why. It comes from China. I want to be accurate.”
During a briefing about the pandemic, Trump deliberately crossed out the
word “corona” and inserted the word “CHINESE” in his notes, a photo from
The Washington Post revealed.
The Anti-Defamation league said the rhetoric furthers “discrimination,
scapegoating and xenophobia.”

“Words matter,” ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt told the Daily News last week.
“Any time public officials intentionally seek to alienate or marginalize
any community is very dangerous.”
The World Health Organization has condemned Trump’s language and
repeatedly urged elected officials to refrain from linking illnesses to
geographic locations or ethnicities.
About 12% of the incidents reported through the STOP AAPI HATE forum
over the last week came from New York residents. Here in the city,
several racist incidents have made headlines in recent weeks.
