DENVER -- Slick roads and high speed are under investigation as possible
factors in a one-vehicle accident that killed one student and critically
injured another from a private school Tuesday night.

The accident happened in Denver around 7 p.m., on Hampden Avenue near
Colorado Boulevard.

Police said the 17-year-old driver lost control of a car and then struck a
utility pole.

A passenger in the car, identified as Matthew Peterson, 17, was killed in
the crash. The driver was rushed to nearby Swedish Hospital where he was in
intensive care on Wednesday.

Both were students at Jim Elliot Christian School in Highlands Ranch.
Peterson was a senior and the other student, who has not been publicly
identified, is a junior at the school. The close-knit school has only 80
students in grades 7 through 12 and a school spokesman said faculty and
staff were devastated by the loss.

"We have lost one of our own. Matt Peterson is now with the Lord," the
school announced on its Web site, saying that there would not be regularly
scheduled classes so that students can take the time they need to grieve.

"It's been a difficult day to deal with the emotions, to watch kids struggle
and process through this. It's also been a day where we can come together as
a community and support each other," said the school's athletic director
Dave Hiltman.

Peterson's father spoke to Matt's classmates Wednesday to help them work
through the loss.

Peterson was described as very outgoing, athletic, and active in sports and
drama at Jim Elliot Christian School, which he had attended for three years.

"Everybody does know Matt and Matt was a wonderful kid. He was a blessing to
all of us," said Hiltman. "He has never met a stranger."

Matt played soccer for Denver Academy because his school didn't have a
soccer team. He and his friend were going to a 4 p.m. soccer game that both
were playing in but it was snowed out, so they went to a volleyball game
instead. The two were returning from a soccer banquet when the accident
happened.

The other student is expected to recover from his injuries. Teachers say he
has a broken jaw.

A Matthew Peterson Memorial Fund has been established to help his family
defray funeral expenses:
