As I'm sure all (if not, most) of you know, I'm trying my hand at writing my
first spell. In my original herb correspondences thread, I used a spell for
protecting my home from negative energy as merely an example, but now that
I've thought about it, such a spell isn't such a bad idea. So, I went on
google and did a search for tips on spell writing... this is one result that
search garnered, that I found rather helpful, at least in affirming what I
already suspected...

http://www.pathcom.com/~newmoon/create.htm

As this page indicates, there are many steps in the spell-writing process.
(Which is pretty much just plain old common sense, if you ask me.)

One of which, it indicates, is to determine the spell's purpose.

My purpose: I wish to protect my home, as well as it's inhabitants, from
negative forces. (Without binding, of course.) One road block I've run into
is this: I know how important being specific in your spells is, and I know
that if you're not specific enough, you could do more harm than good. One
example I've read of this was, a witch had a close friend that enjoyed
riding motorcycles. The witch wanted to protect this friend, but in her
spell she couldn't just say 'I want to protect my friend from motorcycles'
because that could mean that the friend would never ride one again, since
riding motorcycles is inherently dangerous, so she [the witch] had to stress
in the spell that she didn't want to prevent her friend from riding
motorcycles, she just wanted to keep her friend safe WHILE he rode them. So,
basically my problem here is that I'm unsure how to word the spell. (Kind of
having writer's block, I guess.) I want to protect my home and those who
live here, but I don't want to restrict them in any way. So I guess I'm
looking for wording suggestions, if only to get my creative juices flowing.

Next I began thinking about materials I would need, and I began researching
correspondences further. (I find the various correspondences pretty
interesting anyway, so it was kind of fun.) Such as: candle colors, moon
phases, days of the week, etc.
Here's what I came up with (that's relevant to the spell):

Saturday - (Ruled by Saturn) A good day for spells to overcome obstacles,
neutralizing harmful energy (this is what caught my eye), binding and
banishing. A day for protecting by blocking or pushing away negative forces.
(This last bit also caught my attention.)
(This lead me to believe that, while the spell could be effective any day I
preformed it, this particular day of the week would be most effective. I
could be wrong about this. As I've said, I'm new to this.)

Black Candle - Good for magick done to absorb or remove anything. Banishing
(this is the part that caught my eye, as I want to 'banish' negative
energy), hexing, removing hexes.

I'm as yet undecided on the best herbs and/or oils to use.

Now, according to the site I gave the link to above, the next step is to
write down a full explanation of the purpose of the spell, why I'm doing it,
and what I hope the outcome to be. I find this entirely understanable, since
this explanation would probably be a great tool when one finally gets to the
part of drafting the spell. But, as I stated above, I sort of have writer's
block, and I'm looking for a few suggestions or helpful tips.

Next, the web page mentions raising power. This is a subject of particular
confusion to me. I'm not quite sure how to go about it. I've read so many
different techniques that different people have used, and I can't quite
decide which I think would be best for me. I do know that I don't want the
complexities of a ritual, and I don't feel it's necessary to cast a circle.
I would like to hear thoughts on the subject, and tips for deciding what
method might be best for me.

I realize that some parts of this post might sound a bit vague, and I
apologize for that. I'm sort of in limbo at the moment, as I try to figure
out the best way to proceed from here. Thanks ahead of time for taking the
time to read this post (I realize it's a bit lengthy.)

Thanks. I try to make my posts as specific as possible, especially since
being specific not only gets a better response from people, but I also get
the most out of it, as far as knowledge garnered from replies go. I've found
that, the more specific the question, the more specific the answer. My goal
is just to learn as much as I can. =)

It is a good idea to get as large a cross-section of responses as
possible from which to draw your own conceptions. Always question, as much
as it can sometimes annoy, that kind of sincere questioning usually leads to
me learning something. ;->

If wished, feel free to contact me via e-mail in this specific regard.
Specific questions may garner a wide variety of responses in a public,
unmoderated forum.
That's the good news. Whether these responses are specific to your
inquiries remains for you to assess.

How to write a spell: Throw all of this tip shit out the window, get
yourself centered in a quiet place, focus on what you want to do, and start
writing.

Well so far I haven't gotten much of a response. I've been looking on
various web sites and found much the same thing on every one I've checked.
Nothing that answers my specific questions, unfortunately, which is the
problem with web sites. You can talk to them all you want, but they don't
talk back. =/

Nightwish, am I correct that you said you are doing a home protection spell? I
have my own way of doing this, a bit different than what you've decided to do,
but it's proven pretty effective. Are you definitely going to do it the way
you've mapped out, or do you still want other suggestions on other ways to do
it?

What I do first is give the home a good, thorough cleaning. I recommend using
something with lemon in it. You can buy special lemony products at occult
stores for this, but I use plain ol' Lysol or whatnot.Lemon promotes positive
vibrations and happiness.

When done with that, I use a Rue floor wash. I thoroughly scrub the floors with
it. When doing this, you are supposed to visualize what you wish to obtain. So,
I would visualize my home being protected, and negative energies being
repelled, as I was scrubbing the floor.

You can burn a cleansing or protective incense, like white sage. I prefer
Frankincense or Myrrh, because they smell yummy. :) Frankincense helps to
create a 'sacred space' so this is also good to use in the area where you do
magic.

When that is done, I put an open jar of sea salt in each room. The salt is
supposed to draw all the negativity into it. I also burn a white candle with
the salt. Sometimes when I do this, I will come back later and the salt will be
moved around in the jar, like pushed up to one side. Perhaps the negativity it
absorbs takes up space in the jar? After done with the salt, I usually just
dump it into the garbage.

I sprinkle a bit of Solomon's Seal into the corners of each room. This is
supposed to repell evil or negative spirits and energy.

When I feel the house has been thoroughly 'cleaned', I take a protection oil
and inscribe a protective sigil above each doorway and window, to prevent evil
from entering. A good shortcut to doing this is to paint the sigil on ( with a
teensy bit of protection oil mixed in -but not a lot, or you'll make the paint
weird) and then when it dries, I paint over it in the same color. You'd never
know it was there. We did this when we recently repainted our home. :)

To make a sigil: There are many seals of Solomon you can get from occult stores
for protection, or you can make one up yourself, that has meaning to you. A lot
of folks use this technique to make one: They write out their wish, then remove
all letters that repeat themself, so each letter only appears once. Example:

Evil May Not Enter Here

breaks down to

EvilMayNotTrH

You can experiment with words, and get a combination that feels right to you. I
usually take the letters, and write them around a protective symbol. You could
even use a pentagram in this case.

I like to occasionally reinforce the positive vibes after cleansing by burning
strawberry incense, or sandalwood, and burning a Rue candle.

If you charge a broom with protective energies, you can hang it above the door
to prevent evil from entering, as well.

My s.o. and I are gargoyle collectors. We literally have them everywhere in the
house. I charged and anointed all the gargoyles with protective energy and oil.
If they're gonna just hang around on the walls all day, I might as well put
them to work, right? :)

I like quite a few of those ideas, and I'd like to thank you for sharing
them with me. However, at this point in time, I don't think it would work
for me. (My living situation is a little strange, but I won't go into that.)
I think perhaps that if I were to use your method, I would want to wait
until my fiance and I moved into our own apartment. (Actually, we're
thinking about moving to Sacramento, and we found a beautiful apartment
while doing a search online. Great floor plan. It has a fireplace and
everything!) But at the moment, I don't think it would work for me. But I
will copy and paste into a Word doc so I don't lose it. It could be useful
information to have in the future, that I'd like to refer to, if you don't
mind.

Well, hopefully it helps. :) Hey, you could always just clean with lemon
Pinesol or something, nobody would know the intent behind it. :)

Nightwish, if Kat's method appeals to you, there are quite a few bits you
can pick out and use without anyone noticing (if you're in a shared house
with non-pagans, for instance). Painting sigils on the walls might be a bit
obvious, but candles and bowls of salt you can get away with :)

It's not so much that I'm worried about people discovering my intent... the
thing is, my fiance and I rent the upstairs of his parent's house... so me
being downstairs cleaning the entire house would probably seem a bit strange
to them... add to that the fact that the house is pretty cluttered, so
cleaning would take days.... =P I think I'm better off waiting till we get
our own place for that. Lol. In the meantime, I'll use what pieces from your
suggestion I can (like the salt, for example). Thanks =)

'Nother thought (I too have suffered in shared houses, in the past) you
could offer your fiance's parents some appropriately scented candles, or
oils if they use a burner, as a present, and extend at least some of the

I think the best advice may be to keep spells as simple as possible.
If a spell needs to be complicated, it is often best to break it down into a
number of simple elements.
Once this has been done, each element can be dealt with as a separate issue.
