Judgement 49
The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God.
My comments:
God told Jeremiah the prophet to tell Jerusalem that when Israel were in the wilderness, after the came out of Egypt, they were God`s firstfruits and as such, holy to him.
Jer 2:1 ¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
The firstfruits are the first corn, the first vegetables and fruit, the firstborn of an animal or the first son born to his mother.
The beginning of the spring harvest was the cutting of the wave-sheaf on the day following the annual Sabbath on the second day of the feast of unleavened bread (16th Nisan). A sheaf was cut and waved to God – the first of the ripe corn – and that day was a work day when the harvest began.
The harvest lasted for 7 weeks and a day – when, on the Day of Pentecost, two loaves made from the flour of the spring harvest were also made.
Pentecost means “count fifty” in greek – because there are fifty days from the day the first sheaf was cut until the fiftieth day when the two loaves are eaten. It is called “the feast of weeks” in Hebrew because it consists of 7 complete weeks and one day.
The firstfruits of the produce of the land should be taken to the house of God when they are ripe:
Exodus 34:26 Take the first-fruits of your land as an offering to the house of the Lord your God.
Aaron and his sons received the firstfruits from the land, and they were allowed to eat it:
Num 18:13 The earliest produce from their land which they take to the Lord is to be yours; everyone in your house who is clean may have it for his food.
In the days of Elisha the prophet, he was brought firstfuits of 20 barley loaves and ears of corn. God performed a miracle like Christ`s miracle of the loaves and fish, and the 20 loaves stretched to feed 300 men, with some left over!
2 Kings 4:42 And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.
43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.
When Judah, Levi and Benjamin returned to the land after the captivity, Nehemiah ensured that the firstfruits and tithes were brought to God`s house:
Nehemiah 10:32 ¶ And we made rules for ourselves, taxing ourselves a third of a shekel every year for the upkeep of the house of our God;
33 For the holy bread, and for the regular meal offering and the regular burned offering on the Sabbaths and at the new moon and the fixed feasts, and for the sin-offerings to take away the sin of Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
34 And we, the priests and the Levites and the people, made selection, by the decision of the Lord, of those who were to take the wood offering into the house of God, by families at the regular times, year by year, to be burned on the altar of the Lord our God, as it is recorded in the law;
35 And to take the first-fruits of our land, and the first-fruits of every sort of tree, year by year, into the house of the Lord;
Le 23:4* These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
36 As well as the first of our sons and of our cattle, as it is recorded in the law, and the first lambs of our herds and of our flocks, which are to be taken to the house of our God, to the priests who are servants in the house of our God:
37 And that we would take the first of our rough meal, and our lifted offerings, and the fruit of every sort of tree, and wine and oil, to the priests, to the rooms of the house of our God; and the tenth of the produce of our land to the Levites; for they, the Levites, take a tenth in all the towns of our ploughed land. (BBE)
Ephraim is God`s firstfruit-nation, glorious at first, but quickly devoured:
Isa 28:1Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
Christians have the firstfruits of the Spirit:
Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
Since the Christian Church is holy, the lump of dough from which they came is also holy (Israel):
Romans 11:16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
The first of the lump of dough was offered to God:
Num 15:18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land whither I bring you,
19 Then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall offer up an heave offering unto the LORD.
20 Ye shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough for an heave offering: as ye do the heave offering of the threshingfloor, so shall ye heave it.
21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD an heave offering in your generations.
Ezekiel 44:30 And the first of all the firstfruits of all things, and every oblation of all, of every sort of your oblations, shall be the priest’s: ye shall also give unto the priest the first of your dough, that he may cause the blessing to rest in thine house.
Christ is the firstfruits of those who slept in death and are resurrected:
1 Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
Christians are the firstfruits of God`s creation:
James 1:18 Of his purpose he gave us being, by his true word, so that we might be, in a sense, the first-fruits of all the things which he had made. (BBE)
THE 144,000 ARE HOLY FIRSTFRUITS TO GOD AT THE END OF THE AGE:
Revelation 14:4 These are they who have not made themselves unclean with women; for they are virgins. These are they who go after the Lamb wherever he goes. These were taken from among men to be the first fruits to God and to the Lamb. (BBE).
These are 12,000 from each tribe of Israel (except Dan who functions within another tribe). They are holy because they observe God`s laws of holiness. They are not unclean on God`s holy days through contact with uncleanness (from women or death as explained in Lev 11-15 and Num 19). They are “virgins” which means they are clean people, and holy.
Book of the Law of the Lord, chapter 50:
14. When ye are come into the land which the Lord your God giveth unto you, and have gathered the harvest of your inheritance, ye shall bring a portion of the firstfruits of your fields before the Lord your God, for an offering of firstfruits.
15. At every Temple where the name of the Lord your God is named, shall the Priest appoint the day of firstfruits, according to the days of your principal harvests of food; and by that day shall ye all bring your offering of firstfruits unto the Priest, in the Temples and the Synagogues, and ye shall have a holy convocation before the Lord in every place to which ye bring the firstfruits.
(The principal harvest are different in the northern and southern hemispheres.)
16. Ye shall lift up unto the Priest who ministereth unto the Lord a portion of firstfruits, by the day of the holy convocation of the harvest; on the selfsame day ye shall offer an offering of flesh also; a clean beast, or a clean fowl: it shall be a sacrifice and feast of thanksgiving unto the Lord, for the abundance of the harvest.
(brackets mine)
17. And ye shall not eat of your harvest, neither bread, nor grain, nor green ears, nor roots, nor germs, till ye have brought your offering of firstfruits before the Lord your God. He that eateth thereof, shall add a fifth to what he ate, and bring it and the increase, and the firstfruits also: and the firstfruits shall be an abundance for the feast, every one for his household: and the rich shall bring for the poor, out of his abundance, and for the Priests also that minister.
(If you live very far from the place to take the firstfruits, and need to eat your crop, you can lay out the firstfruits and bring them later).
PENTECOST IS THE FEAST OF FIRSTFRUITS:
The Day of Firstfruits, is, of course Pentecost.
