Nobody wants them: German newspaper publishers refuse scientoloy ad campaign
A QUESTIONABLE CULT WANTS TO POSE AS INNOCENT VICTIM
Nobody wants them [Nespaper publishers] refused a series of ads which the
scientology-cult wants to publish. With ten full page ads, each one costing
from 23,000 DM to 64,000 DM, the organization wants to start a "campaign of
enlightment".
"Enlightment" however is less addressed to the goals and intentions
of the cult - which "possibly" is planned for the second part of the
series. Moreover the organization wants to warn about the "dangers" of the
"current situation".
The ads - publishers were delivered samples of texts - compare the
actions of German officials against the cult with the persecution of the
jews during national socialism. The general tenor is that in Germany there
is again a climate as it existed before the holocaust....
... The ad texts talk about "religious intolerance", "hate propaganda" and
"social discrimination". Statements are missing concerning these
allegations: that the cult exploits its members mentally and economically,
that it terrorizse critics, that it attempts to undermine business, state
and society and that it is aiming for totalitarian world domination. It
appears that scientology is less interested in defence but in creating an
image of being an innocent victim.

Hmm; so, if the culties are so scared, why aren't they leaving Germany
in droves? I mean, if they're seriously concerned that Germany will
soon ship them off to death camps and gas them, why aren't they buying
$500 tickets to Canada and America, or crossing the border with their
European passports and going to France or something?
Because they're not worried at all.

Damn good point. Except for one thing: Germany is bordered, variously,
by Poland, the Czech republic, the Ukraine, Austria, Switzerland,
France and Denmark.
Most of them are as unfriendly towards Scientology as Germany is. No,
the only place they could really seek refuge is the US, and I can't
see the INS taking too seriously a bunch of Scienos telling recycled
I-was-a-Jew-in-Germany-during-Kristallnacht stories.

Can't believe you forgot to mention the Netherlands as one of the countries
that border Germany, and wouldn't welcome $cienos.

Because, the last time I checked, German was one of the top
Scientology nations, i.e. they have more members per capita in
Germany than anywhere else.
Also, it's not Scientology's nature to back down. You should know that
by now.

You are obviously not aware of my complete failure to grasp the basics
of European geography :-)
No offence intended.
Is it OK if I drink extra Dutch beer when I'm in Holland as a penance?

Ukraine doesn't have a border with Germany. Netherlands and
Belgium additionally do. Also Sweden is a moderately short boat
ride, and Norway, Great Britain, and Finland somewhat longer
ones.
wouldn't England like a few immigrants?

i've already seen stevea's apology for his geography.
I quickly realised that my geography wasn't up to a comprehensive
list, but I didn't realise I'd added countries that didn't border
Germany.
Nonetheless, my point remains.
> wouldn't England like a few immigrants?
England is becoming almost as protectionist as the US in terms of who
it lets into the country, although European citizens can move here
without restriction. However, with the PR meltdown that the cult is
experiencing here in the UK, any Scieno leaving Germany would be
better looking for a rather more favourable haven than here.

Make me suffer, why don't you! :-)
