Still Germans after all these years

The Nation
25.11.1996
By Alexander Cockburn

Lest you think Ranger-Gull's account of Christian hysteria a bit overdrawn,
consider this story from the newspaper Der Nordschleswiger, published on
October 12 of this year and datelined Apenrade, under the headline "School
Association Puts a Spoke in the Wheel of Scientology Plots," with the
subhead "Staff, Parents and Children Who Belong to the U.S. Pseudo-Cult
Will Have to Leave the German Northern-Schleswig School, and Kindergarten
Associations and Their Institutions."

The German School and Language Association for
Northern Schleswig (DSSV) is now putting a spoke in the
wheel of the plot of the so-called Scientology Church,
before the ideology of this U.S. pseudo-sect can
sabotage their institutions.

After looking into the question thoroughly, the board
of DSSV unanimously decided at their meeting on Thursday
night in Apenrade that children of members of
the Church of Scientology cannot be accepted into their
institutions.

As a result of the deliberations it was established that:

1. The board of the DSSV explicitly distances itself
from the Scientology cult.

2. The board demands that none of the DSSV-affiliated
associations and institutions accept any Northern-Schleswig
members of Scientology or their children in their associations.

3. Staff, parents and their children who profess to be
members of the Scientology cult will have to leave the
DSSV association and their institutions. The German
School and Language Association for Northern
Schleswig is shortly going to send the results
of its deliberations to all their local associations as well as
schools and kindergartens.

The current German attitude toward the Scientologists in their midst rather
swiftly evokes the dementia of an earlier period. My friend Heber Jentzsch,
president of Church of Scientology International, has sent along a sampler
of parallels:

NOW:

The Christian Democratic Union (C.D.U.) party has a form that one has to
fill out, starting with a disclaimer at the top that one is not a
Scientologist. No such disclaimer is required for former S.S., criminals
and terrorists.

THEN:

In a book titled Jewish Education in Germany Under the Nazis there is an
order dated November 14, 1935: "A Jew cannot be a citizen and cannot vote."

NOW:

Labor Minister Norbert Blum has stated that he wants the kids of
Scientologists out of the German kindergartens. Such children have already
been kicked out of schools.

THEN:

From the same book as above:

Order of September 15, 1935: "Minister of Education Rust ordered the
complete elimination of Jewish pupils from the Aryan Schools."

NOW:

The City of Stuttgart has forbidden Scientologists from handing out
leaflets or tracts.

Labor Minister Blum said that Scientologists are taking over the real
estate market. In fact, the church owns one building in Germany. The number
of church real estate agents is about 0.3 percent of all real estate agents
in Germany.

Chick Corea, the jazz pianist, can't play at any state-supported jazz
concerts in Germany. This has been condemned by the U.S. Human Rights
Caucus, the Congressional Arts Caucus, the U.S. State Department and the
United Nations.

Most recently the Youth Union of the C.D.U. boycotted Mission Impossible
with Tom Cruise and Phenomenon with John Travolta because both actors are
members of the Church of Scientology.

Of course groups like the Scientologists often don't evoke much sympathy or
indignation when their rights are flouted. Similar intolerance had many
U.S. newspapers and magazines cheering lustily when the F.B.I. incinerated
the Branch Davidians and their children outside Waco. Yet here in 1996
little kids are being kicked out of preschools because of their parents'
beliefs. Write to the German ambassador and tell him you've bought your
last Braun kitchen appliance.

Someone please print this and send this to Mr. Cockburn's boss.

Cockburn swallows everything his "good friend" Heber Jentzsch, a person
awaiting trial in Spain, tells him, without bothing to check even the
most basic facts.

Guess why Cockburn doesn't tell where Apenrade is. I am 99% sure that
the whole article deals with the german minority in Danemark.

What happened was that a group of scientologists were not sending their
children to school. After not being allowed to open a brainwashing
factory for children in Germany, they opened one in south Danemark. That
school was later also declared illegal by Danemark (whose people, btw,
complained in the media that Germany had "sent them nazis and
scientologists" into the country).

Scientology's next attempt was to register the school under the cover
the german minority. The "danish germans" were not sleeping, and thus
prevented the infiltration attempt.

The latest I heard is that the children are now going to ordinary
schools, and *also* going to their brainwashing factory.

Obviously, scientologists are considered worse :-)

A court recently *upheld* this practice, and based its decision on
scientology's papers, even explained that it would be the "duty" of the
scientologists to infiltrate the CDU to destroy it, which of course the
CDU cannot accept. The court decision can be found at

Scientologists can vote and can be voted. The are no plans to change
this, and I have not heard that anyone has ever asked this.

>>NOW:
>>
>>Labor Minister Norbert Blum has stated that he wants the kids of

I have never heard that Blüm said that. Also, no children were kicked
out of *public* schools. The situation in private schools is different,
as shown by the example in the "Merz Schule", where all scientologists
were complimented out at the end of the school year after scientology
literature started to appear in the school.

Also, Blüm is not the minister responsible for schools,
it is Jürgen Rüttgers.

Yes, and this was upheld by the courts.

Microsoft staffers are also just a tiny percentage of the computer
market. But there is no doubt that Microsoft dominates it.

According to an expert, scientologists currently offer 1/3 of the condo
conversion market in Berlin.

>>Chick Corea, the jazz pianist, can't play at any state-supported jazz

Untrue. This applies only for Baden-Württemberg; it was upheld by the
court twice. The court also noticed that Corea did not dispute that
scientology is totalitarian.

Nevertheless, he performed in Germany as recently as March 24, 1996,
during the 27th International Jazz Week held in Burghausen, an event
which received approximately $10,000 in funding from the Bavarian
Ministry of Culture.

Braun is owned by Gillette, so it's an *american* company.

Hmm... an article from a year ago.
I usually don't insult people's names, but given that this guy is a
close friend of Heber Jentch, I have to wonder if "cockburn" is a side
effect of the "rear" admiral's auditing.

Cockburn has a long record of making cult propaganda. The main reason is
that many years ago he had a journalistic dispute with
Richard Behar.

"The Nation" must be quite a crappy newspaper, if they can't even afford
a fact-checker.

cock "sucker" burn has repeated unaltered libels distributed by the
cult of scientology against behar, author of the famous time article.

he also loathes the clintons and also repeats unaltered anything nasty
damn near anyone says about them, which i imagine much endears him
among the washington times moonie crowd.

Several years ago, ``The Nation" published an article (I think by Noam
Chomsky) that argued the systematic genocide of Cambodians by the
Khmer Rogue was all a hoax, created in order to isolate a regime at
odds with China, & back the Powers That Be.

Since then, their credibility with me has ranked below such American
tabloids as ``Weekly World News".
