First of all, the survey itself is borrowed from my experience at Universal
Studios. It asks the guests for comments on the film, obtains demographic
information, and then asks for an audience rating on the following scale:
How would you rate the film?
6 Excellent
5 Very Good
4 Good
3 Fair
2 Below Average
1 Poor
It then asks (the most important question): Would you recommend the film to
someone else? (Back in my Universal days, this was the only question that
really mattered to management because it spoke to the marketability of the
film.)
We elected not to survey on Friday (opening night), because we did not feel
that this audience would be representative, but would rather be skewed toward
people who had anxiously awaited the opening, and might be biased in it's
favor.
Our first survey was done on Saturday. The audience was 60% female, 40% male
(possibly because the Tampa Bay Bucs were on TV last night, so the men watched
football.) Initial results are as follows:
Average rating 4.67 on the above scale, which rates the film as being in the
very good to good range.
On the question, "Would you recommend the film to someone else?" the results
are as follows:
Yes 87% No 10% Not responsive 3%
Now, it so happens, that this "recommend" factor is close to that of "ET: The
Extraterrestrial," which was the highest grossing film we had at Universal
during my tenure. Obviously, we don't have the marketing budget of "E.T." and
the results are not yet statistically valid, but this is a very encouraging
start.
Thanks to all those who have helped us. For those, who for whatever misguided
reasons, have tried to harm the film, I will say the same thing I said to the
critic at the St. Pete Times, "You can have any opinion you want. But this is
a unique film. Discouraging someone from seeing this film could cost them
their life."
I'll keep you posted.
Sincerely,

Have a great time,

The successful premiere of this film was the single most potent blow to
scientology in a long time. I really get excited to think of the
possibilities: Showing the film to school kids, damaged ex-culties being
able to laugh at this entity that was their master, videos and discs
being mailed to politicians.
In my view this picture eclipses the publication of several anti-cult
books.
For those of you envious of the films impact I say this to you: swallow
your pride. This is a damned good picture. This is our "Erin Brokovitch".
This was the first feature film produced by Courage Productions.
Remember it was shot on a shoestring budget while under 24 hour threat
and harrassment by the Church of Scientology.
Thank You both, Patricia Greenway and Peter Alexander for making this
movie.
For those new to this issue Peter Alexander was a Scientologist for 20
years and spent around 1 million dollars.
Patricia Greenway was instrumental in helping him get out of this UFO
cult.
You guys are real heroes. Rising above the attacks from former friends
shows real character and fortitude.
With a concerted effort from ARSrs 80 news organizations were contacted.
A few of those are: Tigger,CaesarsChick and Barbara Ward.
Movie: "The Profit" playing in Clearwater

Thanks for the results. Sorry you and Patricia and your friends who helped
get this going had such a falling out. As I have posted, I am quite sure
this was not just an accident...but something quite planned by OSA> If it
wasn't they are even happier.
But whatever I am sorry for all 4 of you that this falling out has occurred.
You are all good people, and I can only hope someday in the near future
things will come together.
Meantime.....Do you plan to Screen the film here in LA??? Might be a *great*
idea...esp for promo, huh?
Let me know if you are.

I haven't seen the film but I think it's remarkable that it was made at
all. When all is said and done, that may be the only thing the film
remains remarkable for. If that's the case, I'll still appreciate the
contribution of everyone who was involved in it very much.
That said, Peter, this is the second time I've seen this "cost them their
life" line. Either you don't know what you're saying or you're being
stupid beyond belief. Don't you realize this is a threat and a kind of
emotional blackmail?
The film will make it or not *as a film*, based on its merits *as a film*.
You want people who don't like the *film* to downplay their criticism of
and instead to promote the value *you* are convinced it has as
*preventative medicine*. What right do you think you have to ask anyone to
do this?
If people don't like your film, they're free to say so. No one *owes* your
film a viewing. No one *owes* it their support. Look up "megalomania."
You must have some weird ideas floating in your head about films, film
criticism and criticism of this film in particular. Why don't you find out
what they are and do something about them?

Congratulations. The very least you did with the movie was to expose the
slease ball nature of these cults. Too bad it wasnt a 10 hour movie, you could
have covered the more subtle aspects.
Having said that, and also having not seen the movie, it does seem from what
Mark Bunker said that you do have a chance to send it to a review audience and
polish it to do even better.

That said, Peter, this is the second time I've seen this "cost them their

The film will make it or not make it *as a film*, based on its merits *as a

think about it in favor of the value *you* are convinced it has as
preventative medicine. But you're not the person who decides what anyone
thinks of your film. You're a film director. If people don't like your
film, they're free to say so. Who do you think you are to threaten them
with the possible death of anyone their criticism might discourage from
watching it?
Who wouldn't understand that after all the work you've put into it and are
putting into it now that you have hopes for it? Who wouldn't understand
that you want it to save lives or even a single life? But if anyone
doesn't like the film and says so, who's responsibility is that above all
others? Yours and the others who made it.
To say something so completely inappropriate in that interview and now to
repeat it here, you must have some weird ideas floating in your head. Why
don't you find out what they are and do something about them.
SW
First, we had a couple of PIs spotted in the area of our location. Then another.
I managed to get behind one PI and chased him from our S. Tampa location all the
way to Dade City (those familiar with the area will appreciate the distance). By
the time I got back to the location, 2 $cientologists had shown up. During the
course of filming, this happened every time: Chase off the PI, and within a half
hour or less, the $cientologists arrive!
From that day on, for the majority of the rest of the filming, I had to contend
with numerous $cientologists handing out their hate literature to the crew and
passersby. They were usually kept at a safe distance, but on one occasion had to
be warned off property for trespassing, and they would often stand blocking
driveways or walkways. I almost hit one of them with my truck when he was standing
right in the middle of one driveway, and he called the police on me. Nothing came
of that, as I had really only seen him at the last minute, and he admitted to
standing in the driveway.
The PIs would continue to show up on occasion, lurking up the street from our
location or soundstage. On one day, we were filming at a marina located on a
little peninsula, and I chased away several PIs from the little park across the
water from that marina. They are easy to spot, with the binoculars and
videocameras, and I found that they are usually very shy when you try to videotape
them.
It was difficult to contend with the fact that I could do nothing about the fact
that $cientologist Mary DeMoss went to the homes of 2 female crew members. These
two women were freaked out by this visit, especially the one who had kept her
address off of every piece of information relating to the film- they could have
only found her home by following her there. She said she felt that their presence
on her front doorstep in itself was threatening.
The other crew member and her boyfriend happen to be friends of mine. I got a call
late one afternoon about Mary's first visit there. I went right to their house,
but Mary had left as only the boyfriend was home. She left her literature (a fat
DA pack) and the phone number for FaRT. A call to that number gets an answering
service. She later came back to visit again, but was told to leave then alone.
DeMoss later sent lengthy letters, on FaRT letterhead, to almost every actor and
crew person. Some were sent to their motel rooms, proving further that everyone
had been spied upon. One was sent to a crew member's mother's house (where his
vehicle was registered), which confirmed for us that they were using crew license
plates to get their addresses.
Throw into this mix the union thugs that showed up late in the filming, and it made
for quite a challenge. I found it rather odd that for the last few days of
filming, while the union picketers were around, the $cientologists were nowhere to
be seen. There were plenty new crew members for them to inform about what a "hate
film" they were making, and I chased off their PIs, but they did not show. I took
that as proof that their intent was not to "inform the crew" but in fact to harass
everyone and impede filmmaking. The union was taking care of that for them!
There were many things that took place during the film shoot, little setbacks and
some very suspicious stuff, but for many reasons I have not talked about them.
Some could have been coincidental accidents, such as the mysterious sinking of one
of the sailboats. Others were quite obvious, like the "anonymous" letter and DA
pack sent to the film company's insurance carrier. In the end, despite the
harassment and interference, the film was completed. I even got in my little cameo
on the very last day of filming: I am the Indian playing the drum right behind
Powers in the scene where he is "researching other religious practices."

It's a film, a fictional entertainment -- you can't compel viewers

Amazing. Thanks for posting this, Mike.
Whoever does the next movie should make sure they film the making of the
movie as well. Could be put to many different uses. Some of the footage
could be edited into the main film; might be interesting. Or it could
serve as the background for opening titles and/or closing titles.

This is a good example of costing Scientology immediate dollars.
How much spent on overweight, snoozing private dicks? ($200 and up an
hour quite often)
All the effort and personnel used to harass the film makers, that
could have gone elsewhere.
Wasted.
Oh wait. Miscavige, you can stop this film. You need to pile on more
resources. Your flaw was too little too late. Don't make the same
mistake!
