(In today Monday's edition of the Zurich "Tages-Anzeiger", the well-
known Swiss cult expert Hugo Stamm offers the following article):
"For Scientologists, the cruise ship Freewinds is the safest place on
earth. Only on this 150-metre-long boat can the highest levels offered
by Scientology be attained. Now, investigations have revealed that
this "safe haven" has exposed thousands of Scientologists to cancer-
provoking blue asbestos.
"The shock may have permeated into the bones of Tom Cruise. The
confessed Scientologist was often a guest on the Freewinds. For
example, there is a video of him celebrating his birthday in 2004. The
Hollywood star was filmed with many other Scientologists and David
Miscavige, the successor to L Ron Hubbard, founder of the cult. Cruise
informed the audience that it was "the best birthday party I've ever
had".
"Other Hollywood stars, including John Travolta and Katie Holmes, were
also guests on the boat. Asbestos-induced cancer leaves its victims
with an average life expectancy of six to twelve months.
"The scandal broke after the cruise ship entered harbour in Curaçao
for maintenance. Workers discovered large quantities of the most
dangerous asbestos, blue asbestos. The police and health authorities
promtly evacuated the workers and sealed the ship. Investigations have
confirmed the asbestos danger: the needles are said to have been
spread throughout the whole ship via the air conditioning system.
"The Scientologists found themselves in a PR dilemma: as they see
themselves as the intelectual élite of the planet who even in the
event of a Third World War regard themselves as being able to survive
it, they have difficulties in admitting this new lapse. In a
communiqué, the word "asbestos" is left out - it is merely mentioned
that the air quality has always been good and met the required
standards. The Freewinds "is being overhauled" and "will be back in
service in 2010". The communiqué adds that the "real and accurate
story" is that the Freewinds is being "renovated" and returned to
"better-than-new condition".
"Lawrence Woodcraft contradicts the story. The architect was to have
refurbished the boat in 1987, but to his horror discovered blue
asbestos, used to insulate and protect against fire, under practically
all of the boat's paintwork. Woodcraft informed the Chief Engineer,
along with Betty Miscavige, the cult head's sister. Nobody wanted to
know anything about asbestos. The reply: Hubbard in his guidelines had
not mentioned anything about asbestos; therefore there could not be
any danger. In any case, there could not be any risk when there were
hundreds of highly trained Scientologists on board.
"Woodcrafts decided against renovating the ship. Scinetology instead
ordered 80 to 90 of its members onto the boat, who during the
renovation work had to spray the asbestos with water and paint (sic).
"But even on board the renovated Freewinds, danger continued to lurk.
Behind the unsealed interior walls and panels, the deadly dust is said
to have been able to freely circulate. Woodcrafts repeated this view
under oath in 2001. Yet Scientology ignored this warning too. Now the
authorities have withdrawn the ship from service.
"The élite unit Sea Org is based on the boat. Those who work in it
sign a contract of employment for a billion years. Highly trained
Scientologists on board are promised immortality and even an after-
life. A sobering thought, in the event of the Scientologist
contracting cancer."

Zurich? News gets around. I sure hope the Deatwinds is laid up until at
least 2010 and that the people sent onboard are using proper protection.

That's a very well-done article; thanks for the translation. You might
went to post a small correction at the paper's website in German,
namely that the Sea Org is not based on the boat. Their nominal
headquarters is the Gold Base in Southern California. The Freewinds is
only one subsidiary "org" of the Sea Org.
Isn't that what they said about the Titanic?

Yes, it must be. There are a few websites and/or associations started
by people who think they were victimized by psychiatry in some way, or
who oppose the use of Ritalin, but they generally go out of their way
to make it clear they are not affiliated with CCHR or Scientology.
scientologists also go out of their way to state they are not
affiliated with cchr or scientology.
Homer,
You have a gift for posting vividly Freudian metaphorical observations
like this one that always make me laugh. I wish you would do it more
often.
