Guys, have you heard about the Citizens for Social Reform (CSR)? It's
a group formed by Scientologists to forward our ideals through the
political process.

They're coming to LA on November 21st and you'll be briefed directly
by Greg Mitchell, the Washington D.C. lobbyist for the Church of
Scientology, ABLE, and CSR. (Check it out: Greg became a
Scientologist, after 8 years acting as the Chief of Staff for a U.S.
Congressman, and receiving help directly from a Scientologist in their
office.)

If you saw the CC Gala, there were FOUR dignitaries who were part of
the event that were a DIRECT RESULT of the work done by CSR, so you
see the broad scale effect their actions have. Please read on and make
plans to attend. We just heard the briefing in Sacramento by Greg and
I promise, you will be BLOWN AWAY by what you hear.

Ml,
Gail Gallegos

Just a little nonpartisan note: Mitchell's boss was former congressman Jim
Rogan, a Republican from California whose district included Glendale
(surprise, surprise). I seem to recall Rogan was the beneficiary of at
least some Scientologist bulk donations, but ptsc can confirm or deny that;
he follows that stuff much more closely than I.

Mitchell himself is currently a partner at a firm with a very pronounced
political slant of its own:

Only five years after starting his firm with four clients, Republican
fundraiser Matt Keelen can boast of one of the biggest client lists of any
Republican fundraiser in town.

His firm, Keelen Communications, has posted some impressive numbers. It has
helped Republican candidates and pro-business causes raise over $40
million, and now raises money for more than 40 Republican House members,
nearly a fifth of the GOP Caucus.

[...]

Greg Mitchell, the firm’s vice president, explained the philosophy of the
firm.

“In not every phone call and in not every meeting is the member of Congress
asking money from the PAC,” he said. “They get to know them more as friends
and human beings. If you haven’t spent time building relationships, you’re
not going to raise as much money as you should.”

[ed's note: And also, touch assists! Touch your wallet! Thank you.]

You can read all about it here:

It's a good thing Republicans are immune to the siren song of Scientology,
isn't it?

Following up to myself (such bad form) to note that yes, my memory wasn't
playing tricks; Jim Rogan was the beneficiary of a good chunk of
Scientologist money in his failed attempt at re-election in 2000, as
observed in this post by Tilman:

Rep James E. Rogan (R-CA): Jim Rogan "inherited" the Glendale district
from Carlos Moorhead (the one whined about the NOTS), and joined H.
CON. RES. 22. He also signed a proclamation in 1997 praising
Scientology Celebrity Center for its "community activities". In June
2000 he introduced Scientologist Craig Jensen as "an old friend of
mine" at a hearing of the House International Relations Committee on
the treatment of religious minorities in Western Europe.

Wields enormous power over congress.

I will need to look into this further, unless someone else beats me to it,
since I have only glancingly looked into Rogan. I got one of those donations
from Craig Jensen when I was looking into the election cycle when Don
Pearson and his people all donated to Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

Another pie Rogan in which has his fingers in which Scientology has great
interest is intellectual property. James Rogan and Howard Coble, two
Republicans from California and North Carolina, respectively, co-sponsored
the proposal that resulted in the penalty for a single infringing copy of
a copyrighted work being raised to $150,000. Their original suggestion was
$250,000, since with most infringement cases involving thousands of
copies, it really makes sense to have fines larger than the GNP of small
South American countries. After all, they're so collectible and so
proportionate, and make the government imposing them look so
reasonable.
