Robin Quivers asked Catherine if her husband was a Scieno and did she
convert him, and Catherine said yes, her husband was a Scieno but she
didn't convert him. Howard said, "You know, I'm eighth level" and
Catherine said, "Oh, really? What's that?" and Howard said "Oh, I
don't know, I'm just kidding with you!" Artie said, "I can't even
look at you any more!"
Howard asked if she thought she could get better work by being a
Scientologist, and Catherine said that she has gotten more confident
and become a better actress because of Scientology. Artie then starts
doing a Dracula impression and says, "I am zee Space Man! Come to
me!" and Catherine says, "What are you talking about? (meanwhile they
start playing this eerie "Twilight Zone" haunted house type music in
the background).
Howard then mentioned that L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer
who told one of his friends, "I'm going to go start my own religion
because there's no money in this goddamn science fiction". Catherine
refuted that, saying, "Actually, George Orwell said that in the
1930s". Howard didn't believe her, saying "They got you all
brainwashed" and Catherine said, "No I've seen it, I'll send you a
copy". Howard repeated that he thought he was brainwashed and said,
"I'm going to unbrainwash you. You've been hanging around Hollywood
too much" and Catherine again insisted that Orwell said it in the
1930s and that he and Hubbard were both science fiction writers and it
got attributed to Hubbard.
Robin then asked if she knew John Travolta and Tom Cruise and
Catherine said she's met them, and she's also met Lisa Marie Presley,
and Robin said, "Oh, she knows all the Scientologists!". Artie then
said in his Dracula voice, "Yessss, zee Space Man vill introduce you
to them!" and Catherine again asked Artie, "What are you talking
about?" Howard then said, "Repeat after me--'Oh, what a goose I am!'
" and people started laughing.
Catherine then asked if Howard had ever read a book by Hubbard and
Howard said no, then Catherine said, "Then you really don't know what
it's about!" Howard then said that he wasn't into any religion, but
that he certainly wouldn't go into any of these "new-fangled
religions" and Catherine said "Christianity was new, and it was
misunderstood back then, too".
Then Robin said, "You walked into the Centre and they said, 'Sit down,
we're gonna put you on this e-meter'?" Catherine said that she had
gone to the center and took a course (which was the "Overcoming Ups
and Downs in Life" course) and it was "very cool". Artie interjected,
" 'How to Get Fooled'?". Catherine said that she started to do better
in life and wound up getting the "JAG" TV series shortly after joining
Scn. She also said that she used to be really shy and insecure before
joining Scientology and that it helped her get over that. Howard then
asked her, "Ever bang your husband on the clay table?" which got more
laughs. Catherine asked why he was so fixated on the clay table and
Howard said that he just thought it was funny when people needed a new
religion, and Robin said, "We make the same fun of Santeria, too!"
Catherine then again insisted that Howard should go and read a book
and Howard, said, "Yeah, I'll read a book and then throw it right in
the garbage!" Howard then said, "Oh, there's my mistake, I read
'Diabetics'!" Artie then said, "You know, you didn't get that series
because of L. Ron Hubbard, you got it because you're the only hot
chick who could memorize all that crap!" which got some laughs;
Catherine insisted that she memorized it better after taking
Scientology courses.
By this time they were going to start playing the "Mike Walker Game"
so the topic started drifting from Scientology, and they ended the
interview with her shortly afterwards. Then after a commercial break,
Howard said that it seemed like Catherine was mad at them for goofing
on Scientology because she started acting more abrupt and less
friendly with them towards the end of her appearance and apparently
during the commercial break she didn't even want to stick around to
chit-chat or pose for pictures, etc., like many of the other celebrity
guests do, it sounded like she just took off! Robin jokingly
expressed her regret that "Oh, we didn't make a new friend today!".
They also made a couple of other brief mentions of Scientology during
the rest of the show.

The batkid speaks the truth. I came in on the middle of the
interview, but right before Scientology came up. I left after the
Mike Walker bit, so I didn't hear the end comments.
As far as the stuff I heard, Sue's report is extremely accurate, and
the quotes are right on the money.
I do recall a couple things that weren't mentioned. Someone in the
background asked if she was a Clear and I thought I heard her say
"no." And at some point toward the end Howard said "I don't care what
religion you are" and then I think he made a comment about her
breasts.
The "time" question...I don't know. Stern is a national show, but I
suspect it is not live in all time zones (I'm not sure). I can tell
you the segment played in LA between 9:30-10:00. I happened to be on
my way to a meeting at that time and heard it in my car.
Thanks a lot (besides, I was not in doubt of Bat's Child, but as sometimes
clams do use our own nickname to "make believe" and spill troubles between
critics.....

It might be an idea to check for radio streaming sites that carry it
nationally. With CBC Radio I can play timezone games with their site. If
I hear something but miss part of it, or want to record it, I just have to
hop a timezone west and wait an hour for it to come around again. (And I
can wait up to three hours to do that, 4.5 hours if I'd started listening
in Newfoundland.) That trick won't work on regional programs, but there's
damned few of those these days except for some of the news.
And best of all, I could post about it to Usenet and give everyone a
couple hours to get the word and get ready.
Alas, I really doubt CBC carries Howard Stern.
Ron of that ilk.
I actually had started taping the segment with Catherine Bell so
that's why I was able to go into detail about what was said. I ran
out of tape at the part where Artie Lang says that Catherine got the
"JAG" part because "she was the only hot looking chick who could
remember all that crap", so I didn't remember all that much after that
when I first posted. However, I managed to get a chance to listen to
the rest of the show, so here was what else they said:
Howard said, "Well you have two beautiful breasts and great legs and
that's all I care about". Robin then asked if they had church
services or if they just give you courses, and Catherine said that
"the services were the courses". Howard said that it was just all a
racket, that all religion was a racket and Catherine denied it, saying
it was about communication and understanding people better. Artie
then said again in the Dracula voice, "Communication with Space Man!"
Robin said that it sounded like the church was lead by Robbie the
Robot. Artie then said "Catherine just called me a knucklehead!"
Catherine said "You're a knucklehead! You're making up stuff!"
Mike Walker (gossip columnist for "The National Enquirer") then got on
the phone to start playing the game where they have to guess the fake
gossip item, and Howard asked Mike if he was into Scientology and Mike
said no, he wasn't into organized religion, and Howard said, "Me,
neither, man!". Then they start talking about other stuff, then
Howard interrupts, "I'd just like to report that Scientology might
work because Catherine Bell is levitating right now!" They talked
about some more stuff and then Howard says, "Let's start with
Catherine, she's in show business, she's very tight with Scientology
and knows quite a bit about celebrities, she should be able to figure
this out if L. Ron Hubbard is such a great guy!" Mike Walker asked
Catherine if she was Clear and Catherine said, "No, not yet" and
Howard said, "No one's Clear. When you're bankrupt, you're Clear!"
Then they finished up the game and were wrapping up the Catherine Bell
interview (apparently she's promoting her appearance in the new issue
of "FHM" magazine) and Howard asked if she'd ever consider posing for
"Playboy" and Catherine said she was asked to but turned them down.
Howard asked if it was because L. Ron Hubbard wouldn't approve, and
then asked if she had to get Scientology's advice first before posing
in "FHM" magazine, and she said no, it was her own decision. Then
Robin said, "Who's your leader?" and Catherine said there was no
leader. Howard then said how other religions have rabbis and priests,
and wanted to know what Scientology religious leaders were called,
"are they, what, elders?" Catherine said, "No, they're not called
anything, they're just my friends" Artie then said, "Space Men? El
Rons?" Catherine then said that Howard should read "Dianetics" to
understand Scientology, how he could just read one paragraph and say,
"Wow, that's cool!"
Howard asked if she asked the Scientology elders if she should come on
his show, then Howard starts doing a Dracula impersonation of a
Scientologist, saying, "Ven you go there, make him read the book!
Once he knows the book, bring him in!" Robin then asked, "Are there
Space Men?" Howard said, "Yes, John Travolta is a space man". Artie
then says in his Dracula voice, "If ve convert Stern, ve vill rule the
vorld! Convert the King of All Media!"
Then Howard said how he didn't care what religion she was, that she
was "smoking hot" and that was all that was important to him. They
started talking about something else again, then Howard said something
about "Who knows? I might see you up in that space ship!" Catherine
then repeated that Howard should "read the book". Howard said, "If I
was doing you, I'd read the book! I'm not gonna convert if I ain't
doing you!" and said something about how he'd read the book if they
put a nude picture of her on page 294.
Then they went into a commercial and then after the commercial break,
Howard started talking about how he thought Catherine was mad because
they were making fun of Scientology, that she barely shook his hand
and said something about how the last 10 minutes in there were
"brutal" and Howard remarked how he thought it was funny how people
would get all defensive about religion (and that's when Robin said
something about "Aww, I thought we had made a new friend!")
They had some comedian joining them in the studio at this time and he
asked exactly what Scientology was anyway and Howard said something
like "I think they believe in the test tube, I think they worship
science". Howard starts talking in a Dracula voice, "How can you not
join ven brain surgeons like John Travolta and Tom Cruise are in? And
Jenna Elfman!" and "Join me in prayer--E equals MC squared!". Then
he said that at least Scientology doesn't have any child abuse stories
like the Catholic priests, and Robin says, "There you go, there's
something positive!" Then they talk about something else.

Perhaps someone should send Stern information that shows SCN is not a
religion, the Lisa McPherson Story, Disconnection policies, Fair Game,
suppression of free speech, misuse and abuse of the courts, the only
"religion" that is allowed to charge set fees for services and uses "tax
free donations" to pay high priced lawyers to intimidate and destroy
American citizens, etc.
Stern's calling Scientology a "religion" and making fun of all religion,
IMO, only serves to promote SCN. as a "religion'" and confuses people of
established religions who know nothing about SCN and who might then
support SCN as a religion just like theirs.

OK so he knows about the "beliefs" of this "religion". I was not
talking about the things that Scietologists do in their pursuit of
moving up the Bridge to Total Freedom. Or what the COS wants you to
know.
So is Stern a wimp and playing it safe when he does not bring up the
criminal activities, totalitarian groupthink, supprerssion of free
speech, abuse and misuse of our courts, mental and physical and human
rights abuses, etc.? He has no trouble pointing out the abuse by
priests of the Catholic Church.
I don't listen to Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh.......so what has Stern
done to promote public awareness of the two faces of scientology and its
true nature?

I'm sure it won't live up to your standards but he has been talking
about Scientology for years.

That's definitely a fact. And in Howard's defense, I think he's
likely more interested in providing entertainment for his audience
rather than warning the world about the evils of Scientology, and I
doubt that many of his listeners are going to want to listen to
stories about Lisa McPherson or the RPF or whatever every day. And at
least he does make fun of Scientology instead of being some
butt-kisser like Oprah or Rosie who gush all over Tom Cruise and
Travolta and let them talk about how great Scientology is without
saying anything critical.
(in fact, Cruise and Travolta would probably never be on Howard's show
because they would probably want all sorts of stipulations about what
topics can and cannot be discussed and Howard would never go along
with that kind of thing.)

Yes, he has, and Catherine Bell was no doubt informed by her peers in
the cult about his disdain for Scientology, yet she walked right into
it.
It is also well-known that Stern loves having porn starlets and whores
on his show undressing themselves. Perhaps, Bell was scouting for
leads for a second career once her stint with "JAG" is over.

Incidentally, while I missed his original taunting of Catherine
Bell, I caught him this morning still making fun of her and how
touchy she was. He was commenting about how silly it was
how people got all uptight the moment you start making fun of
religion. Another comment he made was "And how could you
NOT make fun of Scientology?" Then he turned to other issues.
