Why be an unhappy clear when there's so much more happiness in being
an aberree?

Why buy the freedom from scientology when freedom already exists in
the world?

To buy freedom from scientology is to buy less freedom in the reality.

Non-buyers of scientology can do so much more in freedom compared with
the buyers of scientology.

This is a charming, amusing account. It's set in the kinder, gentler
years of the 1980s, and the easygoing Australian attitude shows
through. Do check out the thread where more segments are posted:

(Mary, I hope you will eventually string it all together on your blog
for easy reading.)

One bit I really liked, which is so typical:

"Though I was becoming more disaffected with the org staff, it
indirectly increased my admiration of Ron. I would defend his legacy
even though idiot-staff couldn't see what was happening.

"The next thing that happened was purely by accident. I was getting
quite interested and awed with Hubbard and his achievements and had
collected most of the 'Ron' booklets (Ron the blah, etc). I tried
piecing together a timeline to make up a kind of biography but I found
there were a few gaps in his history. I remember getting quite anxious
about finding out, so I innocently went on the internet and googled
his name. Holy Messiah!"

I liked it a lot. Different, the way he framed his journey to
"fleedom" in thinking he got from the structure and method in
Scientology.

Kind of ironic, that he got the most out of testimonies from people
who identified themselves, by name and with specific geographic
locations, but he doesn't. Then again, he didn't go through a
harrowing experience, just a more generic one. And he probably has
some very valid reasons for not identifying himself.

The two things that were most encouraging about it:

1. That the curiosity that brought people into the cult, isn't
completely destroyed by brainwashing, and that members will be curious
about gaps in Ron's life, gaps between official statements by cult
leaderships and is really happening, and above all, the stories of ex-
members, who were after all, the reason all Scientologists seem to
mention as the thing like liked about Scientology, the people. Before,
it was hard to fill in those gaps, but now it is easy, on the
internet. Before, people disconnected from their family members, and
didn't know what happened to them, let alone people they were worked
with, whom they liked, who may have been dumped after some mysterious
incident. People realize that the internet is the medium for free
expression -- the real story of what happened to someone -- and that
Scientology is the opposite.

Scientology is flying past an obvious point. The number of ex-
Scientologists, who see if for the scam that it is, is overwhelming
current membership, and hurting its capacity to attract new members.
New members of yesteryear took 5, 10, 15, and more years to figure it
out. Now with the internet, new members, the few they get, will be
ditching it after six months or a year or two at most, and have a
forum to voice their discontent.

2. Members in the last five years are even more aware of the
multifaceted money squeeze, everything from revised books/tech/
courses, to the relentless drive for new buildings and funding, and
standing ovations while watching video of "the 10 copies of Dianetics
sold in Fiji." Those who do participate in the vulture ministers, on
some level, realize they aren't exactly changing the world, and
instead are just part of a front group to create that illusion, or to
make Scientology appear charitable.

The basic process of accepting Ron as "source" is threatened by both
these things.

Yes, I found that interesting, too.
As far as anonymity goes, many if not most former members are
anonymous on the internet and for very good reasons. Fair Game and
Disconnection are alive and rampantly used by the cult to control it's
members and it's former members. I myself must use an alias but I make
that known often so as to not mislead. Better to anonymous and speak
up then to not speak up at all.

Scientology used to be pretty much a "me" thing -- quite egocentric.
You were paying to get audited and learn things on courses so you
could gain knowledge and personal power. Altruism was on the back
burner except for a few people. Happy Aberee describes the transition
to outright donation begging (with nothing in exchange) very well.

I'd say it's highly likely to turn off newbies who come in and get a
few basic services, then get hammered for "charitable" contributions
-- like Jamie Packer for instance. I'll bet they didn't get much out
of him before he bailed out.
