I would suggest you look up in your phone book for your local Botanica
stores and get to know the owners. They would then direct you to a local
ile.
And while you are there, I suggest you get some books to read. They will
recommend some good books for you. (But be aware that some of those books
are in Spanish. You might want to make friends with some Spanish speaking
people or invest in a good spanish-English dictionary or software program.

Walking into a random botanica is a good way to get scammed. Don't let
anyone rush you into necklaces, it's like being branded. Legitimate
Santero's do not steal other people's god children, but their are many
people who may want to rope, tie and brand you and then you wind up being
stuck with a god parent who does not have your best interests at heart.
It's hard to investigate a mystery religion but spending some time up front
will pay off in the long run. Ask around. Find out who has a good
reputation. Get a reading from more than one source. If the religion is
right for you, the gods will guide you.

Ache! This is all very excellent and unfortunately too necessary. I would
like to add that if someone DOES rope, tie and brand you with collares,
you are NOT obligated to make the Saint with that person. Receiving
Collares is one initiation and it is beautiful.. but if after one has
received collares, if he/she discovers that he/she is NOT in the right
Ile, then he CAN get out - either cleanly (I asked my first Madrina's
blessing in a way that made it easy for her to give it) or just OUT -
depending on the severity of the situatiion. Still, the investment in time
that Not-So-Loko recommends is the best way to avoid situations to start
with.
